GE Healthcare, Ferozsons L.L. and P&SHD collaborate to deliver comprehensive training program for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (MNCH)

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) GE Healthcare and one of its local partners, Ferozsons L.L.  will deliver a capacity-building program around maternal & infant care, including a series of application training classes and knowledge transfer sessions delivered by international and local trainers, at Shahbaz Sharif Mother & Children Complex, Sheikhupura.  The strategic cooperation agreement was signed by the Minister of Primary & Secondary Health, Khawaja Imran Nazeer, in the presence of David Mezher, General Manager GE Healthcare Middle East & Pakistan, Mohammad Kenanah, General Manager- Ultrasound, Middle East & Turkey, GE Healthcare, and Dr. Mazhar Qureshi, Country Manager, GE Healthcare Pakistan.

This strategic cooperation between GE and the Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department (P&SHD), Government of Punjab, will run throughout the year and aims to enhance and develop the skills of healthcare providers and midwives in the Punjab province. Ultimately, the program will help enhance the reach and quality of primary care services for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (MNCH), and will help address the challenge of maternal and neonatal mortality in the province.

Through this capacity-building program, GE Healthcare and local partner Ferozsons L.L, will cooperate with the Ministry of Health to train healthcare providers and midwives in nine districts of Punjab on utilizing ultrasound technology to help enable the provision of 24/7 high-quality antenatal care. These healthcare providers and midwives will then continue training primary healthcare providers throughout these districts year-round. With this remarkable training on adoption of innovative technologies designed to empower healthcare professionals, led by the government’s Vision 2025 to reduce infant mortality rate from 74 to less than 40 (per 1000 births) and reduce maternal mortality rate from 276 to less than 140 (per 1000 births), GE continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare sector.

Speaking at the occasion, Khawaja Imran Nazeer, Minister of Primary & Secondary Healthcare, Government of Punjab said: “Although the situation for maternal and child mortality is alarming, the Government of Punjab under the leadership of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, is fully committed to addressing these challenges and this training center is a major step in that direction. We are not only training LHVs and CMWs in all districts of Punjab but also equipping the BHUs with the latest technology to ensure that no pregnant woman is refused the right to quality healthcare. “

Dr. Mazhar Qureshi, Country Manager, GE Healthcare Pakistan, commented: “GE is proud to support the development of Pakistan’s healthcare sector by providing innovative technology and solutions that address their biggest clinical and economic challenges. In-depth programs like these deliver the technical hands-on training healthcare providers needed to improve the patient experience, increase clinical confidence and heighten productivity.  Perhaps most importantly, these sessions enable knowledge transfer and ensure that more healthcare professionals across Pakistan have the training they need to deliver better healthcare outcomes for years to come.”

Pakistan lags behind most developing nations in its MNCH indicators. According to WHO & UNICEF, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) of Pakistan ranges from 111 to 283/100,000 live births, under five mortalities is 81 deaths/1000 live births and infant mortality rate (IMR) is 66 deaths/1000 live births; more than half of infant deaths occur in the neonatal period, respectively. While IMR has declined steadily over the last two decades, there has been no parallel decline in neonatal mortality rate.

GE partners with the public and private sector to deliver a new age of patient care in Pakistan. Today, a growing number of the large hospitals (facilities with 300+ beds) across the country are equipped with GE Healthcare technologies, helping healthcare providers combat cardiovascular diseases, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

Chairman Middle East, Pakistan and Africa (MEPA) Region of Entrepreneurs’ Organisation (EO) Mr S M Imran received the visiting global chairman.

EO Lahore hosted a dinner in his honour that was largely attended by the business community. He was taken to historical sites in the city of Chiniot, including the Umar Hayat Palace. He also visited Din College for Women there. Further, he witnessed the entrepreneurship potential of craftsmen in a remote city like Chiniot.

Members of a proposed EO chapter in Islamabad city also called on the visiting Chairman.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Brian expressed his wonders over the level of negativity being spread around the world about Pakistan. “My impression about Pakistan is entirely different from what is being projected on the international media,” he stressed.

He said Pakistan is full of rich cultural heritage, people with warm hospitality and amazing entrepreneurship talent. The world should bank upon the entrepreneurial and human capital skills of Pakistan, he added.

The Islamabad chapter of EO is likely to be launched in the month of March. The Northern areas, including the city of Peshawar, would be part of Islamabad chapter. Mr Waleed Mushtaq from Roots Schools System would be the first-ever President of this chapter.

S M Imran said the Islamabad chapter has amazing potential to grow, as members of this chapter hail from various sectors including textile, development, hospital business and venture capital market etc.

He said he had a plan to open separate chapters in Multan and Faisalabad. However, the idea of setting up chapter in Multan has been dropped because the members from the city are more comfortable to be part of Lahore chapter. However, efforts are afoot to set up a separate chapter in Faisalabad. He expressed a hope of combining Sialkot and Gujranwala in future to set up another chapter because of the existing of enormous potential in this area.

Briefing about other initiatives of EO MEPA, he said the EO Egypt chapter has been launched this year. However, developments are under way to set up another office Lebanon soon, he added.

Mr S M Imran has been elected as Chairman MEPA for the year 2017-18 and he is putting all his energies into action to strengthen the region since he has assumed the office of regional head.

It may be noted that at least 16 members are required to open up a chapter of EO anywhere in the world.

Imran has attended a get together  of sitting as well as the upcoming presidents of various regions under EO in Athens. It was a training session both for the existing as well the new comers. Especially, the new comers are trained to handle the affairs of their regions. Over 100 members assembled there to interact with each other from across the globe. However, he could not attend EO gatherings both in Tanzania and Jordan due to some unavoidable reasons.

He said EO has never compromised on its core values. Therefore, such assemblies of members from across the globe help it out to achieve its targets. On an average, seven to eight percent members relinquish because of a strict following of the core values. These are the core values which help members to grow in their businesses while learning from each other at the platform of EO. So far, the EO membership has crossed the figure of 12000 worldwide.

Imran said the image of Pakistan has improved among the EO members over the years. Especially, the role of Pakistan in the regional context is a hot topic among the members of EO.

Lahore –  Under the umbrella of its Employee Volunteer Program, ‘A New Hope’, Zong 4G’s volunteers visited the children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Autism Research Centre, Islamabad.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that is marked by social and communication difficulties and repetitive, inflexible patterns of behavior.

Zong 4G’s participated in various group activities, modelled positive social interaction and encouraged the children to have fun. For children with ASD, isolation is often a lifelong thing, which leaves them more vulnerable to an extent. The activities were carefully crafted for these children to comprehend and bring joy and happiness.

The volunteers adhered to improving emotional and mental health by spending time with them as well as giving them a chance to communicate and step out of their isolation. Spreading the magic and joy, the volunteers surprised the children with gifts, which left them in awe.

Zong 4G’s small gesture of giving back to the Autistic Society indicates that each child’s wellbeing matters.
