Happened in India and Lahore previously, Shaan e Pakistan this year came to the city of lights Karachi to dazzle the city with the alluring and exquisite collection to be showcased from across the border along with our local designers. The purpose is to bring the art and talent of both the countries together. At this moment Indian high commissioner Ajay Basaria was there to attend the show presented by the collaboration of Sephub and SoPritti.

Rimple and Harpreet Narula:The Rimple and Harpreet Narula’s signature style represents an interesting paradox of rural craft and exalted design — highly distressed surface treatments are juxtaposed with fine hand embroideries and the silhouettes enhanced with a contemporary spin! Their take on design and the process of design is intuitive while their approach to color and use of fabric is spontaneous yet exceptional.

Their collection is a tale of travel and transcendence…a yearning of the soul for a long lost home to which one cannot return.The spirit of the collection is of longing and desire, to hope and to rediscover, to lose one’s “own” to regain the “self” in the process.

The collection finds inspiration in the designers’ love for old textiles and their sublime leitmotifs. A riot of motifs- the French Paisley, Baroque chandeliers and curios, Arabesque cartouches, flowering blooms and trellises from Pichwai paintings, hunting scenes from Afghan carpets and Samarkand rugs, Byzantine mosaics, the Palampore “Tree of Life”, Mughal miniatures, and fantastical Birds and Beasts are used by the designers in a painterly fashion and rendered onto the ensembles using traditional kasab, resham and kachi-patti embroideries.Bringing Padmaavat to live in Karachi, Saba Qamar was the showstopper for Rimple and Harpreet Narula.

Reema Ahsan:

Reema Ahsan’s collection “Mehrunnisa” showcases the strength of a women, the pure heritage with all the inricate and ethnic details embellished and showcases new women of today bringing the heritage forward. Reema Ahsan’s collection was an amalgamation of silvers, pinks and light gold. The showstopper Sadia Khan looked ethereal in a beautiful silver outfit.

Komal Chawla:

With the colour platte of white and gold, Komal Chawla’s collection consist of 3d embellishments and cuts. From top to bottom, the models looked an epitome of beauty and style. The showstopper for Komal Chawla, Hania Aamir made the showcase much more amazing.

Punjab Chief Minister’s Strategic Reforms Unit and Reckitt Benckiser (RB) Pakistan Sign MoU for the empowerment of women

Lahore – (Muhammad Yasir) Punjab Chief Minister’s Strategic Reforms Unit (SRU) and Reckitt Benckiser (RB) Pakistan Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work towards their mutual aims of increasing women’s mobility and access to the workforce. SRU and RB Pakistan are to collaborate by intertwining SRU’s Women-on-Wheels campaign and RB’s sales force & distributors. The Women-on-Wheels Campaign conceived in 2015, through the provision of free motorcycle trainings, trained more than 3500 women across the districts of Lahore, Multan, Sargodha, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi. As its second phase, Government of the Punjab will be providing 700 customized motorbikes on a subsidy to successful Women-on-Wheels candidates later this month. These successful Women-on-Wheels candidates will participate in a massive movement for women’s empowerment: WoW Mega Rally 2018. They will be distributed the keys of their customized WoW motorbikes at the Mega Rally.

RB Pakistan aims to engage women trained under the Women-on-Wheels program through employment opportunities in their sales force. Moreover, SRU further aims to involve existing women employed under RB Pakistan to undertake WoW trainings and to participate in subsequent phases of the Women-on-Wheels motorbike subsidy scheme. RB Pakistan shall further assist SRU in creating awareness regarding the WoW campaign especially during the WoW Mega Rally event.

Both entities will further engage in opportunities to address women’s access to employment opportunities through the WoW program and will serve to promote this mode of public-private partnership for the socio-economic upliftment of women in the country.

Burj Capital’s 50MW wind power project, Jhimpir Power, begins commercial operations

  • Jhimpir Power marks Burj Capital’s first foray in the clean energy space in Pakistan. Along with its other wind and solar power projects, Burj targets establishment of a 500MW renewable power platform in the country
  • The JP project is installed with 29, 1.7-103 GE wind turbines, with PowerChina Huadong as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Jhimpir Power, Burj Capital’s first project in its 500MW renewable asset platform in Pakistan, has now achieved commercial operations. The plant was inaugurated today by Burj Capital. Burj Capital is a Dubai based investment firm engaged in renewable power development focusing on both utility scale and distributed generation strategies.

The wind project is located in Jhimpir, in the Gharo-Keti Bandar wind corridor in Southeast Pakistan, which is a high-quality wind resource capable of generating over 50,000MW of clean and affordable electricity. The Jhimpir wind corridor coupled with solar power can be further developed into a resource of national importance, able to reduce the country’s reliance on expensive imported fuels and provide the people of Pakistan clean and cheap electricity.

Saad Zaman, Founder & Group CEO of Burj Capital, said: “Completing our first project and delivering power to the national grid is a proud moment indeed. This is only the start however we have a lot more in store for Pakistan. Given where wind and solar power stands today as the cheapest, fastest deployment and cleanest source of electricity in the country, we are at the cusp of an energy revolution that will take Pakistan from being an energy poor nation to an energy rich one. The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the US Government’s development finance institution, is the sole debt provider to the project and has financed 5 projects in Pakistan, totaling about 250MW, in the Gharo-Keti Bandar wind corridor.

OPIC President and Chief Executive Officer Ray W. Washburne, said “The provision of reliable electricity is an essential building block of any economy. OPIC is proud of its partnership with Burj Capital and our work together to bring reliable energy generation to the people of Pakistan.”

Jhimpir Power selected GE Renewable Energy as the turbine supplier and operations and maintenance (O&M) contractor. The project has been built by PowerChina Huadong as the EPC contractor. Jhimpir Power is the fifth project in Pakistan to feature GE’s advanced wind turbines. As part of its operations and maintenance services, GE is also offering the project its technical know-how and smart maintenance and repair services prioritizing plant performance.

Dr. Manar Al Moneef, General Manager of GE Renewable Energy in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, said: “GE is very pleased with the relationship we have established with Burj Capital for Jhimpir Power, and are thrilled to inaugurate the first project our companies have delivered together in Pakistan. This not only underscores our commitment to bring clean and affordable energy to Pakistan, but also helps us to provide even more opportunities for local people and businesses, with the addition of 50MW of renewable power in the national grid, that can light up more than 20,000 homes..”

Sarim Sheikh, President & CEO of GE Pakistan, Iran & Afghanistan, added: “The commissioning of 50MW Jhimpir Power wind farm marks the fifth onshore wind project for GE in Pakistan. This makes me very excited about our growth in Pakistan, as more renewables also means significant changes to the energy mix. We are now very well positioned to meet market requirements and close the gap between demand and supply for energy in the country.”

The Government of Pakistan has tasked the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) to ensure 5 percent of total national power generation capacity to be generated through renewable energy technologies by the year 2030, following the U.S. Agency for International Development and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that Pakistan has over 132 gigawatts (GW) of wind energy capacity and has to date exploited only 1% of this.

Aside from utility scale power plants, Burj Capital is also entering the private power space in Pakistan taking advantage of falling cost of technologies like PV solar and targeting the unmet power needs of consumers.

BASF signs €1.7 billion agreement to acquire additional seeds and crop protection businesses and assets from Bayer

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) In addition to the agreement signed in October 2017, BASF has signed an agreement to purchase further businesses and assets, which Bayer offered to divest in the context of its planned acquisition of Monsanto. The expanded scope includes Bayer’s entire vegetable seeds business, operating under the global trademark Nunhems®, seed treatment products sold under the Poncho®, VOTiVO®, COPeO® and ILeVO® brands, the R&D platform for hybrid wheat and the complete state-of-the-art digital farming platform xarvioTM.

The all-cash purchase price for the additional businesses and assets BASF agreed to acquire is €1.7 billion, subject to certain adjustments at closing. For the full year 2017, sales of these businesses amounted to around €745 million.

The transaction also includes Bayer’s oilseed rape business in Australia; certain glyphosate-based herbicides in Europe, used predominantly for industrial applications; the canola-quality juncea research and certain non-selective herbicide and nematicide research projects.

This purchase is in addition to the agreement BASF and Bayer signed on October 13, 2017, which entails the acquisition of Bayer’s global glufosinate-ammonium non-selective herbicide business; seeds businesses for key row crops in select markets and trait research and breeding capabilities for these crops along with the LibertyLink® trait and trademark. These businesses generated sales of €1.5 billion in 2017. The all-cash purchase price for this prior transaction is €5.9 billion, subject to certain adjustments at closing.

Both transactions, with combined 2017 sales of €2.2 billion and combined 2016 sales of €2.0 billion, complement BASF’s crop protection business and biotechnology activities, adding new capabilities and opportunities for profitable growth and innovation. The all-cash purchase price for the combined acquisition is €7.6 billion, subject to certain adjustments at closing. In 2016, the combined businesses generated EBITDA of €550 million (on a pro forma adjusted basis).

“With this acquisition, BASF will become an even better partner for farmers by strengthening our crop protection portfolio and entering the seeds business in key agricultural markets. Through the expanded scope, we are accelerating and broadening the basis for growth across all regions,” explained Dr. Kurt Bock, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE.

“This is another important milestone shaping the future of BASF in agriculture, and we look forward to having the new colleagues join the team and play an active part in our future growth,” said Saori Dubourg, member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE and responsible for the Agricultural Solutions segment. “Our customers will benefit from a balanced and highly innovative offering that will give them a real choice and help them develop their businesses successfully,” Dubourg added.

“With our expanded portfolio across seeds and traits, chemical and biological crop protection, soil and plant health, and digital farming applications, we will have even more tools to support farmers,” explained Markus Heldt, President of BASF’s Crop Protection division. “When these transactions are completed, we will have more than 12,000 experienced employees working in agriculture to connect innovative thinking with practical action to help our customers increase their yields, crop quality and profitability,” Heldt concluded.

All transactions remain subject to the closing of Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto, expected in the second quarter of 2018. BASF’s acquisition of the businesses and assets Bayer offered to divest in the context of its planned acquisition of Monsanto remains subject to the approval by relevant merger control authorities.
