Coca-Cola & Rotary inaugurate water filtration plant at world’s 5th largest slum in Sindh

Karachi (Muhammad Yasir) –  Coca-Cola has partnered with Rotary Pakistan National Polio Plus Committee, and UNDP as administrative partner, for the project ‘Zindagi’ – meaning life, with a mission to provide clean drinking water and mitigating the transmission of water-borne diseases in Pakistan. The $80,000 project has been funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation and the third of five solar-powered filtration plants has been inaugurated in Orangi, Sindh, which is the 5th largest slum in the world with a population of 2.5 million, according to a study conducted by Habitat for Humanity, UK. The plant was jointly inaugurated by Rotary National Chair Aziz Memon, DG Ovais Kohari and Dr. Inayatullah Kandero, Medical Superintendent at Qatar Hospital.

The Phase 2 of the project was launched earlier this year for providing convenient access to clean drinking water to a population of 140,000 across Punjab and Sindh’s catchment areas, with each plant recharging 3,000 gallons of water twice a day per shift. Previously, the reverse osmosis plant in Malir town of Karachi installed in 2014 has helped in the reduction of water-borne diseases by an estimated 70%. The new plant at Sindh Government Qatar Hospital in Orangi will serve 55,000 individuals with potable water in the catchment area, along with health and hygiene trainings.

Speaking about the partnership between Coca-Cola and Rotary, Rizwan Khan, General Manager, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation, Pakistan and Afghanistan said “It was of great concern to us that Pakistan remains only one of two polio-risk countries in the world. Therefore, as a socially responsible corporate citizen, we decided to make our contribution to fight the transmission risk of water borne viruses. With a deep commitment for Pakistan’s welfare, our ethos is to create shared value through sustainable development, which is reliant on the health of our nation.”

At the inauguration ceremony, a Symbolic Key was presented to the Dr. Inayatullah Kandero, responsible for operationalization of the plant. While inaugurating the plant, Rotary National Chair Aziz Memon commented, “Orangi Town is one of the most underprivileged urban slums in Karachi and the supply of safe drinking water will greatly improve health issues of the community and save children from water-borne diseases. We need more sustainable partnerships like ‘Zindagi’ project so that our future generations can be presented with a polio-free Pakistan soon. There are no polio cases reported in 2018 so far and we aim to reaffirm our mandate by 2019.”

Easier access to clean drinking water helps in improving mortality rates and living standards and it allows women to save time which was previously utilized for the collection of water from far away sources. With community-level awareness campaigns about hygiene and medical education, the medical expenses of families will also decrease due to reduction in diseases.

Haveli Bahadur Shah Power Plant Complete, Starts Combined Cycle Commercial Operations to Add Up To 1,230 MW of Power Before Ramadan

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) National Power Parks Management Company Limited (NPPMCL), GE and SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd. today announced that the Haveli Bahadur Shah (HBS) power plant has completed all commissioning activities and has now started combined cycle commercial operations to add up to 1,230 megawatts (MW) of reliable power to the national grid. The project is among the largest gas-fired combined cycle plants in the country, capable of supplying the equivalent power needed to meet the electricity needs of up to 2.5 million Pakistani homes and one of the most efficient combined cycle power plants in the world today.

“The start of combined cycle commercial operations at Haveli Bahadur Shah (HBS) Power Plant marks a major milestone in the power sector of Pakistan, supporting the government’s goal to enhance access to reliable, affordable power,” said Rashid Mahmood, CEO of NPPMCL. “The project has been developed to the highest standards of quality and excellence, and will serve as a benchmark for future electricity projects in terms of the technology being deployed.”

The HBS project was initiated by NPPMCL, which is solely owned by the Government of Pakistan through the Ministry of Water & Power, and was entirely funded through the Public-Sector Development Programme (PSDP). SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd (SEPCOIII) is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project, responsible for setting up the power plant and all commissioning activities. GE has supplied two of its advanced HA heavy-duty gas turbines, one steam turbine and two heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) for the plant, as well as technical advisory services.

Wang Zengxu, SEPCOIII’s Project Director at HBS added, “The Haveli Bahadur Shah Power Plant demonstrates the power of global collaboration with the application of best-in-class technology. We have drawn on a leading combination of exceptional Chinese engineering skills and knowhow, together with GE’s record-setting technology for the facility, to build the most efficient combined cycle power plant in the country.”

The Haveli Bahadur Shah Power Plant is about the size of 65 football fields and staff from over 35 countries worked together to complete the project. The project’s execution has been among the fastest globally and 3 to 4 months shorter than typical for projects of comparable scale and complexity. Performance tests to date indicate that HBS has set world record levels of efficiency.

Mohamad Ali, President and CEO of GE’s Gas Power Systems – Projects business in the Middle East, Pakistan and India, added, “The Haveli Bahadur Shah Power Plant uses industry-leading power generation equipment, including GE’s HA technology – the world’s most efficient heavy-duty gas turbine. This innovative technology is helping to unlock unprecedented levels of efficiency in Pakistan’s power sector, ultimately lowering the cost of electricity production. GE has long supported the development of Pakistan’s energy sector and through our collaboration on this transformational project, we are underscoring our commitment to provide solutions that are truly game-changing.”

GE’s HA technology has undergone full-speed, full-load validation tests at GE’s Greenville, South Carolina facility in the United States at extreme conditions well beyond those encountered while in service. It is the fastest growing fleet of heavy-duty gas turbines today, with more than 75 units ordered to date by over 25 customers across more than 15 countries, including the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Pakistan, Japan, Bahrain, China, France and others. The technology has now delivered two world records – one for powering the world’s most efficient combined-cycle power plant, based on achieving 63.08 percent gross efficiency at Chubu Electric Nishi-Nagoya Power Plant Block-1 in Japan and another for helping EDF’s Bouchain Power Plant achieve 62.22 percent net combined cycle efficiency in France. With these achievements, GE’s HA turbine has been recognized for powering the world’s most efficient power plants in both the 60 hertz (Hz) and 50 Hz energy segments. Furthermore, the HA can ramp up or down quickly, while still meeting emissions requirements to help maintain grid stability. It thus offers an excellent flexible complement to intermittent renewable sources as Pakistan increases the proportion of alternative energy.

GE’s H-class technology is also being used at Pakistan’s upcoming Bhikki and Balloki Power Plants. Together, HBS, Bhikki and Balloki are expected to add up to 3,600 MW to Pakistan’s grid, going a long way towards helping the government realize its goal under Vision 2025 to enhance access to electricity to over 90 percent of the population.

GE has supported the development of energy, transportation and healthcare infrastructure in Pakistan for more than 50 years. Today, GE-built technologies can generate the equivalent power needed to supply up to 25 percent of the country’s electricity.
