RAK Hospital in UAE unveils Free Online COVID-19

RAK Hospital in UAE unveils Free Online COVID-19 Rehabilitation Program for COVID patients across the globe

Launched in collaboration with ARISE UAE, a network of private sector entities led by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) RAK Hospital, a premier healthcare facility in the UAE has launched Middle East’s first ever comprehensive ‘Online COVID-19 Rehabilitation Program’, which will be offered to patients suffering from long COVID symptoms, completely free of cost.

Pakistani Corona Patients can also benefit from this ‘online COVID-19 Rehabilitation Program’. Pakistani citizens can log onto www.rakhospitalrehab.com to register for the program, then undergo  the online health scan after which they will receive a health prescription tailored to their individual situation.

Additionally, there will be weekly webinars focused on guiding patients on various relevant issues faced by them. The complimentary physical appointments can also be booked by the individuals, should there be any such need.

RAK Hospital has launched this program in association with ARISE UAE. ARISE, the Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies, is a network of private sector entities led by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 rehabilitation improves the health prospects of COVID-19 patients through optimizing health and functioning outcomes, facilitating early discharge and reducing the risk of re-admission.

After acute COVID-19 illness, recovered patients often continue to complain of chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, stress and anxiety, fatigue, body ache, cough, sore throat, difficulty in breathing, etc. Emerging evidence indicates that a majority of people who require hospitalization for COVID- 19 experience sequelae such as fatigue and shortness of breath in the months following their hospital discharge. Studies have also shown that the COVID causing SARS-COV-2 virus is likely to linger in the body, for many months. These problems have been described as ‘Long COVID’.

It is observed that about 30% of COVID patients experience long-term debilitating or painful aftereffects of the disease, that hamper their ability to even perform simple daily tasks. Since it’s a new disease, what we have learnt so far is that the symptoms can continue for 3-9 months and pose challenges for people experiencing it. It not only affects patients who were severely sick or hospitalized, but in many instances also impacted the ones who remained asymptomatic during the infection. The most common lingering symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, cough or abdominal pain.

“It is an exclusive program for patients from across the globe. Nothing like this exists at the moment and we are extremely proud of our unique initiative which is supported and patronized by ARISE UAE. Ours is the only initiative providing an integrated and holistic approach to COVID recovery and rehabilitation, offered complimentary to all recovering patients”, commented Dr Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director, RAK Hospital, a multi-disciplinary hospital based in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.

“Our aim at ARISE UAE is to create safe and resilient communities while working towards saving lives. COVID-19 being the biggest disaster of our times, needed our immediate attention, therefore, we felt it was necessary for us to work on presenting a solution which can help the communities not only in this country, but worldwide as well. The RAK Hospital team had the required know-how to carry our vision forward, hence the concept is now a reality”, stated Dr. Mahmoud Burai, Chairman of UAE ARISE and Senior Advisor in Dubai Government.

Led by Arabian Wellness & Lifestyle Management, RAK Hospital’s wellness division, this comprehensive program combines the expertise of a multidisciplinary team comprising of physicians, nutritionists, psychologists and physiotherapists who have worked hard to develop and deliver this idea.

“RAK Hospital had introduced its physical post COVID recovery rehabilitation program last year. However, we wanted to extend our reach to larger communities and wider geographies, thus, to support the community in the comfort of their homes, we created our online COVID Rehab product which assesses the recovering COVID patients’ medical details, test results, co morbidities, symptoms, etc. and instantly makes available a comprehensive online COVID rehab health prescription for a speedy recovery, covering all areas including Medical, Exercise Activity, Nutrition & Diet, Stress and Mental wellbeing, etc.”, commented Prof. Adrian Kennedy, Chief Wellness Officer, Arabian Wellness & Lifestyle Management.

Talking about ARISE UAE, Dr. Tariq Ahmed Nizami, Vice- Chairman, UAE ARISE and Founder and CEO of CEO Clubs Network Worldwide said, “The need to create risk-resilient societies is inevitable in today’s environment, and by forming the first national ARISE in September of last year, we have shown that the UAE is leading the private sector engagement for disaster risk reduction. ARISE UAE aims to achieve the outcomes and goals of the Sendai Framework in a transparent and inclusive way that delivers measurable impact and sets the roadmap for other Arab countries. COVID-19 has put a stark reminder to all of us that reducing risk of disasters, whether natural, man-made or biological, has to be everyone’s business”.

Google gets into sleep surveillance with new Nest Hub screen

SAN RAMON  (NUT DESK) –  Google’s next internet-connected home device will test whether consumers trust the company enough to let it snoop on their sleep.

New sleep-sensing technology will be a key feature on Google’s latest version of its Nest Hub, a 7-inch smart screen unveiled Tuesday.

But the latest Nest Hub can also perform a new trick. If you allow it, the device will also monitor your sleeping patterns from your bedside, negating the need to wear a fitness device or any other potentially bothersome gadget in bed. The feature, which Google intends to offer for free through at least this year, relies on a new chip Google calls Soli, which uses radar to detect motion, including the depth of a person’s breathing.

The $100 Nest Hub can display pictures and video in addition to fielding questions and handling household task through Google’s voice-activated assistant. It doesn’t feature a camera.

The Nest Hub is supposed to generate weekly sleep reports with easy-to-understand breakdowns on the length and quality of sleep, how frequently the user gets up at night and snoring and coughing frequency, along with tips developed in consultation with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Google says it honed the technology by studying 15,000 sleeping people over a combined 110,000 nights.

That kind of help may sound appealing to the millions of people who have trouble sleeping. But the feature may also raise privacy concerns — especially given Google’s long history of online surveillance to collect personal details such as interests, habits and whereabouts to help sell the digital ads that generate most of its revenue.

The company may also eventually tweak the feature to work with its FitBit line of fitness devices, which Google took over in January. That $2.1 billion purchase has raised concerns that Google could use those gadgets to peer more deeply into people’s personal health.

China to issue visas to foreigners who have taken Chinese jab

BEIJING (NUT DESK) – China is poised to ease border restrictions to allow some foreigners — including from the US, India and Australia — back in, provided they have taken a Chinese-made Covid-19 vaccine.

The country has been closed to most foreigners since last March to stem the spread of the coronavirus, which it has largely brought under control at home, leaving many with jobs and family inside China stranded overseas.

But Chinese embassies in several countries have issued notices saying the country will open visa applications to select people who have taken a China-made jab.The Chinese Embassy in the United States said in a statement dated Monday that it would begin to process “visa applicants inoculated with Chinese Covid-19 vaccines”.

This would apply from this week to those visiting the Chinese mainland for work resumption, business travel, or for “humanitarian needs”, such as reuniting with family members.Beijing is driving forward its inoculation plan for its vast domestic population with four domestically produced vaccines approved so far.
But it has yet to approve any foreign-made jabs.

The embassy statement said the new rule applied to those who had either had two doses of the vaccine or a single-dose at least 14 days before applying for the visa.

Chinese embassies in other countries including Australia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Italy and Sri Lanka have published similar statements.

Those arriving in China will still have to face a gruelling quarantine of up to three weeks.China´s vaccines have been rolled out in several countries around the world, including Turkey, Indonesia and Cambodia. The Philippines received 600,000 vaccine doses from China two weeks ago, kickstarting its inoculation drive. But they are not readily available everywhere, including in India or Sri Lanka.

Russia gives Twitter one month to remove ´banned´ content

MOSCOW (NUT DESK) –  Russia´s media regulator Roskomnadzor on Tuesday gave Twitter a one-month ultimatum to remove “banned” content, threatening to consider blocking the social media platform within the country if it does not comply.

Last week Roskomnadzor started disrupting Twitter´s services in Russia, saying the US platform failed to comply with its requests to delete content related to child pornography, drug use and calls for minors to commit suicide.

“We have taken a month and are watching Twitter´s response to the removal of banned content,” Roskomnadzor deputy head Vadim Subbotin told the state-run TASS news agency.  He added that if Twitter does not comply in that time period, the media regulator “will consider the question of completely blocking the service” on Russian territory.

Subbotin also told the Interfax news agency that Twitter has not taken any “specific steps” to remove the prohibited content.

Russian authorities have in recent months increased pressure on Western social media platforms, especially those hosting content supporting jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.
Roskomnadzor last week said it had started slowing down the speed of photo and video content for all mobile users and 50 percent of desktop users in Russia.

A Twitter spokesperson last week told AFP that the company does not support “any unlawful behaviour” and is “deeply concerned by increased attempts to block and throttle online public conversation”.

Instagram boosts child protection tools, including age prediction

WASHINGTON (NUT Desk) – Facebook-owned Instagram unveiled technology Tuesday aimed at preventing underage children from creating accounts and blocking adults from contacting young users they don´t know.

It was the latest move responding to concerns about inappropriate contact between adults and children on the platform, which like most services sets an age minimum of 13.

Instagram will begin using artificial intelligence to determine a user´s age at signup in an effort to find underage users.

“While many people are honest about their age, we know that young people can lie about their date of birth. We want to do more to stop this from happening, but verifying people´s age online is complex and something many in our industry are grappling with,” a blog post said.

“To address this challenge, we´re developing new artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to help us keep teens safer and apply new age-appropriate features.” Additionally, the California giant said it would introduce a new feature that prevents adults from sending messages to people under 18 who don´t follow them, to prevent unwanted contact.

“This feature relies on our work to predict peoples´ ages using machine learning technology, and the age people give us when they sign up,” Instagram said.

Instagram is also looking at ways to make it more difficult for adults who have been exhibiting “potentially suspicious behavior” to interact with teens, including restricting these adults from seeing suggested teen accounts.

The image-focused network indicated it will alert teens to potentially suspect behavior by adults, including the sending of large numbers of private messages.

“We´ll use this tool to alert the recipients… and give them an option to end the conversation, or block, report, or restrict the adult,” Instagram said.
