*The Raj, Lahore, and Bhai Ram Singh: A Historic Book Set to Launch on Amazon for Worldwide Audience*

The eagerly awaited book titled “The Raj, Lahore, and Bhai Ram Singh” is poised to captivate a global audience as it prepares for its launch on Amazon. Authored by the esteemed Prof. Pervaiz Vandal and Prof. Sajida Vandal, this monumental work sheds light on the life and legacy of Bhai Ram Singh, a preeminent architect of the colonial period in Punjab.

During his ongoing visit to North America and Canada, Prof. Pervaiz Vandal had the honor of meeting with Sardar Jaiteg Singh Anant, prominent Sikh Scholar, head of the Canadian Hardarshan Memorial International Trust, and Sardar Surinder Singh Jabbal, Public Relations Officer Canadian Ramgarhia Society. At this gathering, held at the residence of Sardar Jaiteg Singh in Surrey, Canada, Prof. Pervaiz Vandal graciously presented a copy of his book to both esteemed individuals.

The meeting proved to be a pivotal moment as Canadian organizations expressed their eagerness to host a grand launch event for the book in North America, recognizing its profound historical significance.Prof Vandal agreed and book will be launch in North America after the annual THAAP conference (scheduled to held in Lahore in November 2024) at the end of this year. “The Raj, Lahore, and Bhai Ram Singh” delves deep into the life and career of Bhai Ram Singh, showcasing his monumental architectural contributions during the British Punjab era. From his humble beginnings in Amritsar to his illustrious career in Lahore, the book traces Bhai Ram Singh’s journey, illuminating his association with luminaries like John Lockwood Kipling at the Mayo School of Arts and his emergence as a trailblazing architect of his time.

With its rich tapestry of perspectives on Bhai Ram Singh’s character, works, and professional journey, the book promises to be a treasure trove for students of architecture, history, and Punjabi culture alike. Prof. Pervaiz Vandal also revealed that THAAP is diligently working to ensure the book’s availability on Amazon, thereby facilitating easy access for the global Punjabi diaspora, academics, and students keen to delve into the legacy of the architectural maestro, Bhai Ram Singh.

Government misses opportunity to earn billions by delaying gas reforms in fertilizer sector

By failing to urgently address the existing gas pricing discrimination in the fertilizer sector, the Government is missing out on an opportunity to earn billions in revenue. 

On April 4, 2024, Fauji Fertilizer (FFC) increased its urea prices by Rs 633/bag (17%) to Rs 4,400/bag. This price increase was made even though there had been no change in its gas input cost. It is still receiving Mari network gas on the subsidized price of PKR 580/mmbtu compared to other manufacturers on SSGC and SNGPL networks that faced a tariff hike to PKR 1,597/mmbtu in February 2024.  The Government has taken notice of this sudden urea price hike by FFC as there has been no increase in the manufacturers’ gas input costs. For the fertilizer industry, gas prices are key and account for around 70 percent of the input costs. In case FFC is unable to provide a convincing justification for the price increase, the Ministry of Industries & Production may take administrative measures against it under Section 5 of the Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Order, 2021.

The missed opportunity to earn billions in revenue becomes difficult to justify, especially in view of the ongoing economic crisis and IMF loan discussions. This revenue could be used for investment in the agricultural sector through targeted projects and initiatives that generate economic activity and growth in the country. 

According to industry analysts, if the Government had removed the current price discrimination among fertilizer manufacturers earlier this year, it would have been able to collect between PKR 80 – 100 billion in revenues. This is a missed opportunity for the Government and detracts from its objectives of reducing the national debt and achieving long-term urea price stability for the farmers.

It has been suggested that the only way to bring stability to the urea market is to immediately remove the current price discrimination among fertilizer manufacturers for the same homogenous product (gas). Through uniform gas pricing, 40% of the fertilizer manufacturing capacity on the Mari network should be charged the same rate as the existing 60% on SSGC and SNGPL network. 

Government sources reveal that the IMF has already asked the authorities to end subsidies for all fertilizer manufacturers and develop a direct subsidy mechanism for the farmers. By continuing with the much-needed fertilizer reforms to completely remove all subsidies and any price discrimination, the Government will be able to reduce its debt burden, promote efficiency and attract new investments in the fertilizer sector.

Meanwhile, at the Spring Meetings 2024, the IMF has once again stressed on the need to “accelerate the reforms, double down on the structure of reforms in order to provide Pakistan with its full potential of growth.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a committee on the implementation of Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG) and tasked it present recommendations next week. As WACOG impacts several industries, the committee will be assessing the impact of system-wide WACOG on domestic power, industrial (including fertilizers), commercial, and captive power sectors. It will also propose a technology-based foolproof and efficient system for the disbursement of direct subsidy to farmers by provinces once the subsidies for fertilizer manufacturers are completely removed.

Khushhali Microfinance Bank Takes Charge Against Climate Change

Khushhali Microfinance Bank Limited conducted a plantation drive in various sectors of Sindh. KMBL branches in Larkana, Mehar, Mehrabpur, Ratodero, Shahdad, and Wagankambar participated in the event.

The participants planted numerous trees across different locations to contribute towards a greener and healthier environment and combat climate change that is on the rise.

The plantation drive saw indigenous plants including Neem, Conocarpus Eugenia, and Eucalyptus being planted at various locations. These plant species inherit characteristics that enable them to survive longer than other species and are also highly compatible with the native areas. Improving air quality, soil concentration, and carbon capture; they act as life savors in tough weather conditions, provide shade, and help to tackle rising temperatures.

AKU Earns Prestigious Zairi International Award for Research Impact

The Aga Khan University received the prestigious Zairi International Award of Excellence for Research Impact in Higher Education during the 6th MENA Higher Education Leadership Forum (MENA HELF) held in Dubai, UAE, on April 18, 2024. This forum is as an exclusive gathering of higher education leaders from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, with a few notable educational and political leaders from the US, Australia, Ireland and the UK.
The Zairi International Awards for Excellence in Higher Education, which have six categories, were launched in 2021. The Research Excellence Award was presented by Her Excellency Ohood bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Government Development and the Future in the UAE, on behalf of the Center for Learning Innovations and Customized Knowledge Solutions (CLICKS), which presents the Zairi awards on an annual basis. The research award, in particular, recognises higher education institutions for their outstanding contributions to groundbreaking research, that addresses real-world challenges in a variety of disciplines including social, economic, political, and cultural spheres. The prize, which focuses on tangible impact within communities and disciplines, celebrates achievements that demonstrate meaningful benefits. 
“This award is a testament to the untiring efforts by our faculty members, research teams, research administrators, and university leadership to ensure that research is foundational in everything we do as a university,” said Dr Salim Virani, AKU’s Vice Provost Research. “Our core values of Impact, Quality, Relevance and Access (IQRA) are fully represented in the research performed at our university and this award validates those core values of the Aga Khan University.”
The Zairi awards recognise higher education institutions that develop and implement creative responses to current and ongoing issues in the field. It considers many factors, including research priorities and strategies that address local, regional, or global issues; innovative approaches that foster sustainability and growth; institutional culture and how well it cultivates leadership and support; measurable impact and results through publications, citations, patents, and external funding; as well as productive partnerships and collaborations for knowledge co-creation.
“This accolade reflects the dedication and collaborative efforts of our faculty, researchers, and staff who continuously strive for excellence in research. The Zairi Award of Excellence for Research Impact follows the Zairi Award of Excellence for Disruptive Education, which was granted to AKU in 2022 based on the work of the University’s Network of Quality, Teaching and Learning, QTL_net, which supports teaching excellence and promotes scholarship on teaching and learning across AKU.
