Microsoft Power Platform Certification empowering Pakistani Young Girls to become software application developer

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Microsoft, world leading software company, has been empowering young girls to enter the realm of Software application development. Microsoft Power platform has made things easy for even primary grade students to develop customize applications as per their need. Power Platform is a great fit to automate basic business processes with power automate, perform data analysis with Power BI, create simple Power Apps experiences and build practical chatbots with Power Virtual Agents.  Due to user friendly nature, 10-year-old Two Pakistani twins Girls Zara and Zenubia have become the youngest to have the certification and the youngest twin pair in the world to pass the Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals certification. Their journey to app development with little or no coding knowledge began with embracing a growth mindset and encouraged creative expression and self-discovery from an early age.

The success story of twin sister begins, when both were exposed to Microsoft Learn platform which included apps and resources that would lead them to create their very first Microsoft Power Platform app—an expense tracker that reads data from an Excel spreadsheet and helps users create a budget. Their father stimulated their interest in software as he was forced to work from home during the COVID-19 lockdown. They started learning about software from there and learned basic programming by themselves. Even after their schooling resumed, they continued to build on their interest in programming and started replicating applications gaining experience from the web in their free time and build expense management solutions for their father.

The Microsoft Power Platform is one of the world’s leading platforms for low-code applications and business intelligence, and one of the core pillars of the Microsoft cloud offering. The Platform is widely used across the globe as most effective way to develop customize software applications and transforming the way people solve real life problems with the help of technology. The Power Platform certification is meant for individuals that want to build solutions for their organizations using the Microsoft Power Platform. It enables individuals to automate business processes, perform data analytics, and integrate artificial intelligence to build new solutions.

Microsoft Education Lead for Pakistan, Mr. Jibran said “Microsoft believes in empowering people of all ages to bring best out of them in term of creativity and innovative solutions with the help of Technology. Microsoft has long history of nurturing creative minds by offering user-friendly technological platforms that are easy to use even at early age. Microsoft continue to strive for intelligent solutions that have early adoption to prepare next generation of Tech savvy”.

However, these exceptionally highly intellectual girls are not the first Pakistanis to achieve this high success at a very small age rather Arfa Karim was only nine years old when she became the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in the world. She was also the youngest recipient of the Pride of Performance award in Pakistan, and her name was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Enhancing girls’ access to education lies at the heart of the Ministry of Education’s strategy to improve Pakistan’s education indicators, Wajiha Akram

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) “It seems that even though the law of free and compulsory education (Article 25-A) was passed over a decade ago, the government departments are under the assumption that this law cannot be implemented and so, no coherent effort in this regard is necessary.” This concern was raised by Mr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ali, Executive Director, Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI) during a round table discussion in Islamabad with the members of the Standing Committees of Senate and National Assembly.
This parliamentary roundtable was organized by civil society organizations including CPDI, Pakistan Youth Change Advocates (PYCA) and Pakistan Coalition for Education (PCE) in collaboration with Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS).
Ms. Zehra Arshad, National Coordinator, PCE while providing an Analysis of Article 25-A, SDG 4 and Ehsaas program shared, “Pakistan has the second largest number of out-of-school children in the world. It is then not surprising that Pakistan stands last in the Human Development Index among South Asian countries. To add to this crisis, it is feared that an additional 1 million children might have dropped out-of-schools.” she emphasized on the importance of not merely ensuring the swift implementation of Article 25-A but also aligning it with the SDGs to ensure at least 12 years of free and quality education for all.
PYCA’s Executive Director Areebah Shahid commented on the progress towards SDG 4 goals and provided recommendations to achieve Agenda 2030. “There is a dire need to align Pakistan’s commitments under SDG 4 with the actual spending taking place under education. At the federal level this year, we allocated almost 90% of the monetary resources for tertiary education and merely 1.04% for school education. This huge disparity in funding priorities will only make us lag in terms of meeting our SDG commitments.” She also emphasized on the urgent need to introduce gender responsive education budgeting on the same lines as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to achieve the promise of equitable education.
Ms. Ghazala Saifi, Member of the Standing Committee for Education and the Parliamentary Secretary for National Heritage & Culture pledged greater collaboration between the government and civil society organizations. “The standing committee will look forward to conducting meetings in the presence of civil society stakeholders so that there is a sustainable platform for the exchange information, ideas and expertise.”
Senator Falak Naz Chitrali quoted the example of Chitral to highlight the malice of child marriages. “Suicide rate among young women in Chitral has increased over the last few years and the leading causes are either child marriages or marriages in which the woman’s consent is not entertained.”
While speaking about the flaws in our education system, MNA Nafeesa Inayatullah Khan Khattak pointed out that “If we look back in the history, the majority of the national heroes like Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan studied in very backward village schools. He was able to do so not just because of his passion but the provision of excellent teachers who believed in educating with passion rather than with corporal punishment. Incompetent teachers are contributing to the very high number of drop-outs. To ensure retention of students in schools, we need to bring in good teachers.”
In the closing remarks, the Chief Guest, Ms. Wajiha Akram, Parliamentary Secretary for Federal Education and Professional Training said “The federal ministry is not just aware of the issues but we are very actively working to overcome them despite having very limited resources at our disposal.
We are currently in the process of upgrading the list of beneficiaries under the Ehsaas education Stipend program to ensure that children from families that fell below the poverty line after COVID can also immediately benefit from this nationwide initiative.
Enhancing girls’ access to education remains at the heart of our current strategy and we will actively engage with civil society to ensure a process of two-way learning that can make education possible for the most marginalized children in Pakistan.”

The audience greatly appreciated the efforts of the Evolution Media team, at bringing together international and national learned scholars, expert analysts, historians and public servants who had served at the time to unfold the story of 1971 like it has never been done before. Many shared that they were totally unaware of many of the information that were shared and how it completely changed their perspective on what had happened.

The documentary has been produced by Ms. Erum Binte Shahid, with Javed Jabbar as the Executive Producer and writer, Muhammad Zeeshan as the Content Director, and Mitra Bonshahi, Mehreen Jabbar and M. Bilal as the Consulting Editors.

While speaking at the event Ms. Erum Binte Shahid, the producer of the documentary said that she is honoured to have had “the privilege to share the true story of 1971 with the people of South Asia, especially those who were not witness to the events of those years that led to the events of 1971. I am humbled to have contributed towards demystifying the false information that has unfortunately become the mainstream history.”

The documentary is the first of its kind, sharing facts and information not revealed before. International and national experts and intellectual leaders address the false information and shares little known facts about 1971.

While addressing the audience the eminent Javed Jabbar, shared that “the history of 1971 has purposefully been diluted by hyperbole and false information. After 50 years it is time we use the lens of facts and objective analysis to tell the untold story.”

The documentary is the first of its kind, sharing facts and information not revealed before. International and national experts and intellectual leaders address the false information and shares little known facts about 1971. It reveals how history had been manipulated against Pakistan, purposefully creating strains between Bangladesh and Pakistan, to ensure continued regional unrest.

The documentary reveals how the plight and insecurities of the vulnerable people of the then East Pakistan were misused by the international community to promote a separatist movement when the people of East Pakistan, including Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, did not necessarily want an independent nation. The documentary discloses the reality and full extent of India’s involvement in the region, which is not limited to 1971 but, actually, started years before.

Most importantly it clarifies the fake news spread by those against Pakistan of the number of people killed, the rapes, and clears the misnomers of the supposed ‘non-violent movement’. The documentary also outlines the misjudgements made by those in power at the time, which created a conducive environment for regional powers to play politics and break up a nation.

The documentary is an important step to clarify what really happened, to move towards improving relationships between Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is time we told the true story so that we can build stronger ties with our Muslim brothers.

Karandaaz, Pakistan Fintech Network & Pakistan Fintech Association invite Financial Services

Enthusiasts to Participate in the first-ever HACKADESIGN

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Karandaaz is partnering with Pakistan Fintech Network (PFN), Pakistan Fintech Association (PFA), and IDEATE Innovation to co-host a first-of-its-kind design hackathon, HACKADESIGN. The organizers are currently calling problem solvers, ideators, UX designers, design thinkers, and financial institutions to register for participation in the two-day HACKADESIGN to be held in Karachi in January 2022. Winning ideas will be provided awards and prize money after careful evaluation by a panel of judges made up of experts from the financial and technology sectors. The customer onboarding framework by the State Bank of Pakistan has opened up a plethora of possibilities to redefine and redesign an inclusive and user-friendly remote digital account opening and onboarding experience that requires minimum documentation and facilitates the previously underserved segments, but the lack of attention to human-centric design still poses a challenge for the uptake of banks’ digital account opening channels and results in low uptake and stickiness amongst the users. The HACKADESIGN will be a great platform for problem solvers and design enthusiasts to ideate together, build scrappy prototypes, and co-create a winning experience. To apply for participation in the HACKADESIGN, visit karandaaz.com.pk/hackathon/ The last date to apply is December 20, 2021.

Speaking about the HACKADESIGN, Rehan Akhtar, Chief Digital Officer Karandaaz said, ‘While the digital account opening and onboarding framework by the State Bank of Pakistan presents a great opportunity for the financial inclusion of the previously underserved segments, the uptake and adoption of financial services greatly depends on delivering an inclusive experience for the end-users that includes less digital savvy and non-English speakers. Karandaaz is happy to encourage young innovators and creative thinkers through this HACKADESIGN to create human-centered designs that can lower the complexity and help users make informed decisions leading to trust and wider uptake of digital channels for account opening.’

Syed Nadeem Hussain, Chairman of Pakistan Fintech Network said, ‘Design hackathon is yet another step ahead to the mission of having a fully digital financial ecosystem in Pakistan. Efforts jot down by development sector in Fintech are commendable as I believe every individual has to contribute a brick and joining brick by brick we will be able to build a fully digital financial ecosystem. I would highly encourage fintech experts, students, Design Thinkers to participate in the Digital Account Opening experience design competition and promote an inclusive experience for different market segments.’

Haider Wahab, CEO of National Institutional Facilitation Technologies (NIFT) and Chairman Pakistan Fintech Association said, ‘Financial Inclusion remains a challenge despite regulatory interventions and industry efforts such as Branchless Banking. In my opinion, adopting the Design Thinking process is key to improving the experience of remote account opening. Design Hackathon is a great initiative facilitating the industry to come up with fresh ideas leveraging the SBP initiative of “Customer Digital Onboarding Framework.’

Ali Murtaza, Head of Design, IDEATE Innovation said, ‘Pakistan’s fintech ecosystem has progressed rapidly over the last few years, with financial service providers, policymakers, and technologists alike investing heavily in this space. However, unless fintech interventions are designed around the needs and capabilities of Pakistan’s predominantly low-tech users, they will fall short of their ambitious goals. This Design Hackathon gives us an opportunity to bring together stakeholders from financial services, policy, technology, and more to collaboratively build more user-centered solutions.’

The ideas presented at the HACKADESIGN will be judged on originality and innovation, an intuitive and user-friendly customer journey, relevance, and conformity with the onboarding framework defined by the State Bank of Pakistan.
