Abdul Razak Dawood Praises Dawlance and Arcelik

Abdul Razak Dawood Praises Dawlance and Arcelik as they launch a new indigenously designed localised Split AC

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Dawlance – Pakistan’s No. 1 brand of home appliances in Pakistan and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Arcelik, Turkey, initiates its new localized AC production line built with European Standards. Arcelik – the second largest manufacturer in Europe (based in Turkey), has facilitated the design and manufacture of this product through the transfer of technology and design know-how to Pakistan in its efforts to facilitate and support the Government of Pakistan’s Make in Pakistan thrust and to facilitate its subsidiary in to strategically serve its large consumer base in Pakistan and in other countries.

Since the corporate acquisition of Dawlance in 2016, this resourceful global enterprise has consistently invested in Pakistan in building capacity, upgrading products, and transferring technology to Pakistan.

The progressive move to set up a state-of-the-art production line in Pakistan for split air-conditioners aims not only to facilitate the consumers to benefit from the latest technology of indigenously-designed ACs but also pave the way for increased foreign exchange earnings through a noticeable increase in the export of the country and paving the way for sustainable economic growth within the sector.

Chief Executive Officer, Dawlance, Mr. Umar Ahsan Khan met the Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce, Mr. Abdul Razzaq Dawood, in Islamabad to discuss this progressive step which has been taken in the interest of benefitting the consumers as well as the country’s economy via a vision aimed at boosting the exports of the home appliances sector of Pakistan.

Durable Dreams

People around the world have become increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint and impact on the environment, therefore they look for practical and durable choices. Bear Necessities offers an aesthetic alternative to the world with their durable leather classic products including bags, satchels, totes, wallets, and more. Cherry on top: they are all hand-crafted, unique products. They can be happily passed on to the next generation as a cherished memory.

Summaiya Zaidi, cofounder of Bear Necessities, was always impressed by the elegance and quality of bags whenever she went abroad and often wondered why no brand in Pakistan offered such bags. So, lack of quality, durable and practical bags in Pakistan’s market was the motivation behind the inception of Bear Necessities. In 2014, when they started their business, they outsourced the making of their products and sold them online. Back then they had only 4 employees and offered 8 products. With the passage of time the word spread and the demand for their products increased. They thought of business expansion and in 2019 they had their own factory and machinery bought from their savings.

Summaiya Zaidi recalls that when they decided to scale up, they realized that their business needed a major capital injection. For her, loan from banks was not an option. She dismissed banks for their high interest rates. Another problem was that they did not have any collateral that could help them guarantee loan from the bank. Then in summer of 2019 they came to know about Karandaaz through one of their friends. They researched about it, found themselves eligible to apply for investment under Karandaaz Women Venture which is a business support initiative focusing on female entrepreneurs in Pakistan. They deemed Karandaaz Women Ventures suitable for their business as it provided customized growth capital for individual needs of a business and also offered business development services.

With Karandaaz by their side, they scaled up Bear Necessities and now operate with 10 employees offering more than 30 products. All products are handmade; no two products are the same.

Summaiya Zaidi calls their journey with Karandaaz an enlightening experience. “Application process of Karandaaz to secure capital is quite rigorous. We underwent different training sessions. We were trained to make a business plan, draft human resource policies, and introduce different accounting procedures. At each stage they provided us resources and prepared us for the final pitch to secure capital. Once we qualified for the capital, Karandaaz was by our side, supervising us, helping prepare quarterly audit reports, and all that. They brought a completely different perspective, methodology and professionalism into our business, which we may have overlooked otherwise. Such support would have never been provided by any other financial institution.”

In a short period of time, Bear Necessities has carved out a place for itself in the market for durability and functionality of its products. New product development is a continuous process at Bear Necessities. The best thing is that they offer life time warranty in services for their products. Customers may send them the products that they have used over a period of time that needs to be restored; they touch them up, polish them, fix them and send them back. No wonder, they have won the trust of their customers with their online business model.

Summaiya Zaidi is an epitome of a successful entrepreneur, managing her business, education and home. She asserts that no doubt it is a daunting task for a woman to balance life and work. She is fortunate to have her husband and business partner, Husain, by her side. She is also proud of her capable, cooperative and experienced team that offers valuable input for the new product introduction and design.

Husain, cofounder of Bear Necessities, strongly believes in women empowerment specifically in Pakistan. He thinks that women are a significant part of population and it is imperative that they step up efforts to start and run their own businesses. This will bring economic stability to their homes and prosperity to the country. Summaiya too is all for women entrepreneurship and believes that they should be provided ample opportunities to flourish:

“Women represent almost 50% of the population and denying them the opportunities to work and not creating a space for them to flourish is a disservice to half of the population. It is important for women to do their own business because it allows them financial independence and flexibility. Financial independence is important for women to be a source of income for the family. A woman’s time is divided among family, home and business. When a woman gets an opportunity to do her own business, she has the flexibility to use her time for multiple tasks.”

Summaiya is of the opinion that time for women to set up their own business is riper than ever before. They don’t necessarily need to invest a large sum of money to start a business, and with an ecommerce business model, they even may not have to step out of their houses. All they need is to give it a go. They need to work on the ideas they have and the dreams they would love to pursue. Setup their own business, strive for its progress and leave no stone unturned to make their ideas successful. This will result in their financial independence and economic stability of their families while ensuring women’s economic participation. More women-led businesses mean more employment opportunities in general and for women in particular. A family with two incomes is always better than one that has only one income to rely on.

Summaiya Zaidi as an entrepreneur is an inspiration for Pakistani women and a proof that with the right amount of determination, a vision, and necessary support, women can work wonders in the world of entrepreneurship.

Spotify celebrates the spirit of Ramadan

Spotify celebrates the spirit of Ramadan with a special EQUAL Pakistan edition and a Ramadan Destination

Mehak Ali, welcomes Ramadan with “Saleh Ala Nabi Yena” and becomes EQUAL Pakistan Ambassador of the Month

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) As the Muslim community in Pakistan and around the world embraces Ramadan – a time for reflection, giving and togetherness – Spotify celebrates the essence of the Holy Month through audio and announces its Ramadan edition of EQUAL, revealing Mehak Ali as its EQUAL Ambassador for April. Additionally, Spotify has updated its Ramadan Destination for Pakistani listeners, curated for every Ramadan moment.

EQUAL Pakistan Ambassador of the month

As part of the EQUAL Pakistan Music Program, Mehak Ali joins as the Ambassador for April. From her debut in Bollywood with the song “Baab-e-Rahmat” in 2017, Mehak is the first Pakistani to be nominated for Mirchi Music Awards for the hit’s lyrical composition.

Marking the arrival of Ramadan, Mehak Ali has released a soul-soothing praise Kalam, “Saleh Ala Nabi Yena“, showcasing the religio-cultural significance of the Holy Month and the devotion and compassion the Muslim community has for the Holy Prophet. The Kalam can be listened to on Spotify’s EQUAL Pakistan playlist, where Mehak is on its cover.

As the EQUAL Pakistan Ambassador, Mehak Ali will be receiving organic and on-platform promotion across Spotify’s editorial and social spaces. This model has proven effective in propelling significant growth on the platform in both the artists’ home countries and beyond. Mehak will also be featured on Spotify’s digital billboard in Times Square later this month as Spotify continues to turn up the volume on local women creators.

“It is an honor to be selected as an Ambassador for EQUAL Pakistan especially in a month as auspicious as Ramadan. This is an opportunity not just for me as a woman to inspire women in the country but provide listeners with a beautiful track for this Holy Month,” said Mehak Ali

“It gives me great pleasure to be a part of this initiative that elevates women’s voices in society. It is amazing to witness how a brand like Spotify creates a 360 experience that embodies a sense of aspiration for a segment of society, i.e., women who have relatively fewer resources to showcase their talent, especially in fields like music.”

Spotify’s Ramadan Destination

Audio and spirituality are intricately connected to provide inspiration, an outlet for expression, or create the right atmosphere for prayer and contemplation. Every year, Spotify updates its Ramadan Destination, which features a wide variety of spiritual songs, Qawwalis, Recitations, Hamd-o-Naat, and more.

Last Ramadan, Spotify saw an 80% increase in streams from Pakistan for nasheeds (Islamic devotional songs or spiritual hymns) during April than the previous month. Based on streams in March 2022, nasheed consumption should also continue to rise this year.

When it comes to how Pakistani listeners define Ramadan, it is clear from their user-generated playlists on Spotify that Naat and the Quran are critical components of their spiritual journey. The data also revealed that Hamd-o-Naat was one of the most popular playlists in Pakistan last year, proving the significance of Naat throughout the Holy Month. In addition, Ramadan Spirit, a collection of popular spiritual songs sung by some leading nasheed artists, including Maher Zain and Sami Yusuf, is another popular playlist for Pakistani listeners during Ramadan.

In case you’re looking for more Ramadan playlists to listen to, here are a few recommendations from Spotify’s editors in Pakistan:

  1. South Asian Sufi
  2. Salam
  3. Layali Ramadan
  4. Stargazer
  5. Hamd-o-Naat

Accountants’ confidence edges higher in Q1 2022

Lahore (NUT DESK)

Accountants’ confidence edges higher in Q1 2022, but cost concerns reach a record high Finance professionals identify the biggest risks ahead – supply chain volatility and renewed Covid restrictions The latest edition of the Global Economic Conditions Survey (GECS) from ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants) reveals worries about operating costs, with warnings of future economic shocks and increased risks. Conducted just before and during the war in Ukraine, the results understandably point to economic turbulence in the coming months.

GECS’s index of concern about operating costs jumped again in the latest survey by nine percentage points and is now at its highest level on record at 62%. This dramatic rise has played out over the last year and tracks the effects of rising energy and transport costs caused by supply chain shortages and disruption. In the Q1 survey, global confidence and global orders were little changed, up by four points to +9 for confidence and by two points to -3 for orders. Other economic activity indicators, such as employment and capital spending improved. Overall, the Q1 survey maintains the trend of modest overall growth through to the middle of the year, well down from the strong post-pandemic recovery of 2021.

In Q1, the Middle East was the best performing region with jumps in confidence and orders, probably a reflection of the increase in the oil price. Confidence and orders fell back in North America, influenced by the effects of the spread of the Omicron COVID variant. The level of orders in advanced regions remains above that in emerging regions, as it has throughout the post-pandemic recovery. GECS’s two ‘fear’ indices – measured by concern that customers and suppliers may go out of business – were little changed in the Q1 survey, down by two points and one point respectively. Both indices have fallen back from extreme levels seen in 2020 but are still above pre-pandemic levels. ACCA’s chief economist Michael Taylor commented: ‘Given the fast-moving and unpredictable nature of the war in Ukraine, it’s important to note that the survey may not fully capture the likely effects of the invasion. But the main economic effect of the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been to push oil, gas, wheat, and other commodity prices much higher.

This will propel inflation to even greater heights, squeezing real incomes and slowing economic growth. Compared with previous forecasts, global growth may be reduced by as much as one percentage point this year, to around 3.25%.’ Loreal Jiles, vice president of research and thought leadership at IMA added: ‘We again asked respondents to name their two biggest economic risks – 51% said supply chain disruption and 50% said renewed COVID restrictions. Compared with the Q4 survey, there was an increase in rising interest rates as a risk, up to 40% from 26%. We expect U.S. interest rates to rise steadily this year, and this may result in a tightening of global financial conditions.’ Both ACCA and IMA warn of the risk of policy mistakes.

Loreal Jiles explained: ‘Removing the exceptional policy ease introduced to mitigate the effects of the pandemic was always going to be tricky. Over the last year, supply shortages and now the Russia-Ukraine war have resulted in a stagflation scenario reminiscent of the 1970s which was a time of weak economic growth combined with high rates of inflation.’ Michael Taylor concluded: ‘The economic consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are yet to fully emerge. Central banks in advanced economies face a difficult judgement call that could result either in over-tight policy causing recession or too easy policy embedding inflation and inflation expectations. Policies need to be thought through and stress tested very carefully in the days, weeks and months ahead.’
