Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) On Otherday, PepsiCo Pakistan hosted a virtual graduation ceremony for 1,600 fellows of the PepsiCo-Amal youth program.  The graduating cohort has a 40 percent female participation and has representation from 135 town and villages across Pakistan.

Jaqueline Novogratz, Founder and CEO of Acumen was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.

University graduates in Pakistan have immense potential however their transition from students to working professionals is often challenged by their lack of skill sets critical to acquiring meaningful jobs. Additionally, students are not always familiar with the career opportunities that are available to them. As a result, they often struggle to transition from their academic life to a working career.

PepsiCo has partnered with Amal Academy – an education start-up to fill this gap by providing professional skills to university graduates so they can realize their potential and launch into meaningful careers. The program focuses on a wide variety of skills. These include self-confidence, communications, stress tolerance, adaptability, team work to name a few. All of these have been identified as crucial skills to have by prospective employers.

The PepsiCo Amal Youth program was launched in 2018 as a pilot to train 1,000 students. In 2020, the program was expanded into to Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A total of 3,000 students have graduated from the program.  The initiative has partnered with 16 universities and with the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC). This year, over 96% of job seeking graduates received either an offer of employment or ventured into entrepreneurship within three months of completing the program.

Speaking at the ceremony Mr. Fawad Chaudhry, Federal Minister of Science and Technology commented, ‘I want to congratulate the 1600 fellows graduating today. I want to wish them luck and would encourage them to pursue their passions. I also want to commend PepsiCo and Amal Academy on this important collaboration.’

In his remarks, Furqan Ahmed Syed CEO PepsiCo Pakistan and Afghanistan commented, ‘The PepsiCo – Amal Youth program lends itself to great opportunities for the youth of Pakistan. Our fellows graduating today are extremely passionate, motivated and keen to prove themselves. I am very excited to see what they will achieve for themselves and for the country.’

Ali Siddiq, CEO Amal Academy in his address said, ‘Amal Academy is committed to helping the youth of Pakistan and the Pakistani education system reach its full potential. With PepsiCo’s support, we hope to further expand the program and benefit more young people going forward.’

The graduation ceremony also highlighted the social impact aspect of the program which instills the importance of giving back to communities in the fellows. It is mandatory for each fellow to be part of a two-month project called the ‘Mega Project’ which requires for fellows to come with a workable solution to a challenge faced by their communities. Over the last two years, the fellows have delivered 615 such projects and impacted 21,256 people throughout the country.

Dr. Rasheed Ahmed, UNFPA , said, “UNFPA Pakistan continues to support innovations such as tele-health that aims to improve sexual and reproductive health and GBV services, particularly in reaching out to the communities living the farthest behind.  He appreciated Sehat Kahani’s  COVID 19 related initiative in  connecting ICU specialists to health care providers and junior staff offering services to community in general and women and girls in particular and who are in need of assistance and are living in remote areas.  He further added that any telehealth related innovation will contribute to improve health related knowledge management, e-learning and remote monitoring.’

World Economic Forum & PSDF Collaborate to Set Pakistan’s Future Skills Agenda

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Top leaders from across the public and private sector gathered at a press conference on Thursday, to discuss the future of jobs in Pakistan, in light of the World Economic Forum Report.

Present at the event were, Parwaaz co-chairs, Sayed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari (SAPM Overseas Pakistanis & Human Resource Development), Muhammad Aurangzeb, President & CEO HBL, Ghias Khan, President & CEO Engro Corporation, Irfan Wahab Khan, CEO Telenor Pakistan and Chairman Telenor Microfinance Bank as well as top business leaders including, Monis Rahman, CEO & Founder Naseeb Networks, Asif Peer, CEO Systems Limited, Ehsan Saya, Managing Director Daraz.pk and Jawad Khan, CEO PSDF.

In a monumental step, Pakistan has been featured in the ‘Future of Jobs’ Report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for the first time. The Pakistan Chapter showcases jobs and skills of the future, highlighting Pakistani employers’ perspective on new job roles and skills that require attention and investment in Pakistan in the age of technology and automation. In its 2020 edition, the Report features in-depth information on 15 global industries and 26 advanced and emerging countries.

Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF) serves as the secretariat for WEF’s (National Accelerator on Closing the Skills Gap in Pakistan – ‘Parwaaz’). Parwaaz brought Pakistan into the global conversation on skills and the future of work by facilitating an extensive employers’ based survey conducted with over 50 top Pakistani companies and business leaders across 6 priority sectors. The profile on Pakistan provides a detailed snapshot of the future readiness of the workforce in the country.

The Report also features CEO PSDF, Jawad Khan as a Global Expert on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on New Agenda on Education & Work.

The Report insights reveal that in Pakistan, of the over 82 Million working age population, 50% on average have requisite digital skills, 51% have business relevant skills, and almost 55% have acquired education with business relevance. While this looks promising for an emerging country, large challenges remain with 31% youth not featured in employment, education, or training, and 55% of working age population in vulnerable employment.

The results of the Pakistan survey do however have room for ‘measured optimism’; technology adoption especially in the areas of E-commerce, Big Data Analytics and Cloud Computing is high (91% of the companies surveyed).

Pakistani companies are focusing on cultivating employability skills in the domain of Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Creativity and Leadership, in tandem with emerging skills in the global market.

The ‘Future of Jobs’ Report highlights the unique economic challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, while technology driven job creation still surpassing job redundancy over the next five years, the rate of growth in the jobs of tomorrow is reducing.

This results in a ‘renewed urgency’ to take proactive decisions towards reskilling and upskilling youth workforce.  In the absence of proactive efforts, job market inequality is likely to worsen due to the combined effect of technology and the pandemic recession.

The need of the hour is then public-private collaboration at the global and national level, at an unprecedented scale and speed to create socio-economic systems that are more fair, equitable and sustainable.

Karachi is Love’ – Shaniera Akram takes to Twitter to Celebrate Karachi and Fans Follow Suit!

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) On the gloriously pleasant final day of PSL 2020 being hosted in the city of lights, Shaniera Akram’s question of why Karachi is love stirred up a wholesome conversation we didn’t know we needed.
This question comes from a person who has really fallen in love with her new home. Shaniera Akram has always raised her voice for the betterment of Karachi and its citizens. From social causes to ecological concerns, she has used her platform to improve the situation. So, you can tell that for her, Karachi really is Love.
The responses to her question were varied. People love different things about this mercurial city. A common theme was that people love how diverse Karachi it. This is certainly true.

They don’t call it mini Pakistan for nothing. Of course, food featured highly on the list as well. Why wouldn’t it?

Some people also mentioned the famous Karachi sea breeze. Irrespective of how hot the day is, the nights are nice and pleasant. You can sit under the open skies and have a hot cup of tea, even during the hottest month of the year. While others pointed out the generosity of Karachites as being their reason to love the city of lights. From charitable organizations to individual acts of kindness, someone or something will inspire you every day.

Perhaps the most fascinating response was how Karachites are so resourceful and find a way to get things done.

After the glorious win of this year for Karachi – when the fireworks lit up the sky on final night and Karachi came alive with everything that it represents – we were reminded of the charm of this city that millions call home. Now we have another reason to rejoice and revel in this city – cuz Karachi Love Hai Jani!
