Solo curriculum against class-based education setup in Pakistan: ministry

ISLAMABAD: Formulation of the single national curriculum (SNC)is a historic initiative, introduced to eliminate Pakistan`s long standing class-based education system, according to a statement issued by the Ministryof Educationinresponse to objections being raised by various quarters on the SNC.

It has been highlighted in the statement that a campaign against the SNC has been started that is spreading f alse information like, `an Ulema Board has decreed that all human figures in biology text books of the SNC be covered with appropriate clothes to protect their modesty.

Qaris from madrassahs would be appointed in all schools, public and private, to teach the holy Quran. And the SNC discriminates against minorities.

In response to the three objections, the ministry clarified: `The SNC has so far only been approved till grade V. Biology is a subject that is taught from Grade 9 and no textbooks for biology have so far been finalised. The federal government`s approval process for science text-books does not involve any consultation with the Muttahida Ulema Board and so any claim that the board has prohibited the inclusion of any diagrams or educational material from the biology textbooks is f actually inaccurate.

Science textbooks are being developed in close consultation with renowned local and international experts and will not be approved for publishing until it is determined that they meet the required global benchmarks, the statement further said, adding: `It is, however, true that Punjab Assembly has approved a law whereby an ulema board approves all Islamic content in the curriculum. Punjab government has informed the federal ministry that no change was made in the biology textbooks by the said board.

The statement said that appointment of a Quran teacher in public and private schools was not ordered.

PM orders action against FIA officials over woman’s harassment complaints

ISLAMABAD: Expressing annoyance over reported “inaction” by the Federal Investigation Agency on a harassment complaint filed by a woman at the Pakistan Citizens’ Portal, Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered the FIA director-general to investigate the matter and initiate “disciplinary action” against the officials responsible for the neglect.

A letter, according to online media, issued by the Prime Minister House to the FIA said the woman had filed a harassment complaint on the citizens’ portal at least five times between December 2019 and June 2021, but it remained unaddressed.

The woman, after reportedly getting no response from the FIA, approached the PM House on June 15, 2021, with her husband against the FIA officials who, according to her, didn’t pay heed to her complaints, which as a result galvanized the premier into action.

The woman also left her job at a university due to the alleged harassment and lodged a complaint with the FIA, but to no avail. She also reportedly tried to commit suicide due to the lackadaisical attitude of the FIA officials in resolving her complaint

Mandokhel had moved an application under Section 22-A of the Criminal Procedure Code, seeking directions for the SSP Complaints Cell and SHO PS Saeedabad to lodge an FIR against Awan.

What men say about Imran Khan’s comments on rape

Following are some men who are not satisfied with the premier’s simplifying sexual violence to be an outcome of temptation:

 Osman Khalid Butt – actor

“Of course men aren’t robots. Yes, there is desire, temptation, attraction.

“Rape isn’t caused by this. Rape is about power. Dominance, a complete lack of empathy, hostility. It diminishes a woman — or a man, or a child — to a sexual object. It is dehumanising.”

In reply to a tweet, he said: “I studied in a segregated school till uni. There was a strict dress code, and boys & girls were not allowed to fraternise. Somehow I didn’t end up sexually assaulting anyone.”

Referring to the unedited clip of the interview released by the Prime Minister’s Office, he acknowledged that the premier spoke of child abuse as well. But, he pointed out, that doesn’t mean what he said about sexual violence wasn’t highly problematic.

Zarrar Khuhro – journalist

“Look here’s the thing: we all, or most of us, grew up believing wholeheartedly that rape is a ‘lust’ crime, a ‘crime of passion’ involving loss of control over the man’s impulses. Certainly this is what I was socialised into believing too.

“But as you grow (as you should) you learn that this is not the case,” wrote the senior journalist, emphasising on the need to self-reflect and evolve.

“Once you see the actual cases, the actual dynamics and atrocities (children, babies, corpses, heated rods being used as surrogate phalluses) you understand you were wrong. Now, acknowledging that is hard. Because it means that you have to give up comfortable notions that you had previously accepted, had imbibed from elders, peers, society. To accept they were wrong is tough. But sometimes to learn new things, to grow, means to first un-learn the old. And that takes great courage. I get that.

Jibran Nasir – lawyer and activist

“Dear PM Imran Khan, stop humanising the rapists, abusers and harassers and stop objectifying the victims,” wrote the activist.

“You may not realise it but when you repeatedly stress upon the clothes of a woman as a cause for temptation leading to sexual violence you do exactly that.”

Usman Mukhtar – actor

“Rape is rape! There is no justification for it. No! It does not happen because a woman is wearing short clothes. It happens because the person who is committing this heinous, inhumane act is a criminal and the scum of the earth. It’s an act of abuse of power! It’s an act of a deranged mind, not of non robots lured by women!” the actor and director said via his Instagram Story.

“It’s like saying that if a person had a gun in the house they would want to commit murder. And it’s justified because the gun was lying around so of course this had to happen,” he reasoned.

“Mr PM, please stop blaming the victim. It’s time for action. Time to punish such filth of the earth to a point no one dares to commit such an act.”
