Govt. announced Eid Vacations with a “Stay Home-Stay Safe” message

Muhammad Yasir

In an attempt to contain further rise in already mounting the novel coronavirus cases during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) on Thursday announced holidays from May 10 to 15 with a “clear intention of reducing national mobility”.

NCOC, in a bid to curb the spread of the virus, also announced comprehensive guidelines by the name of “STAY HOME-STAY SAFE — Eid-ul-Fitr-2021 from 8-16 May 2021”. The NCOC has also imposed a ban on chand raat bazaars, including mehendi, jewelry, and clothing stalls — from 8-16 May.

The statement said that all markets, businesses and shops will remain closed except for essential services including grocery store, pharmacies, bakeries, vegetable, fruit, chicken and meat shops and petrol pumps.

Furthermore the federal government, earlier, had announced a new set of restrictions, including a blanket ban on tourism and inter-provincial transport. According to the Ministry of Interior, fresh restrictions also included the closure of all tourist resorts, hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, parks, beaches, and other public places from May 8 to 16.

Travel nodes leading to the tourist destinations, particularly the scenic valleys of Murree, Swat, and northern Gilgit-Baltistan region, which attract hundreds of thousands of tourists from across the country during Eid holidays, will also remain closed during the said period, the ministry added. There will be a complete ban on inter-provincial and inter-city transport during the Eid holidays, except for the residents of Gilgit-Baltistan, who will be allowed to travel to their hometowns.

Meanwhile, food will be allowed to be taken from restaurants, and the power supply will continue uninterrupted during the Eid holidays.

The country on Thursday 29th April recorded another 5,480 new cases and 151 deaths, raising the total caseload and death toll to 815,711 and 17,680 respectively. Health authorities warned of a situation similar to that in virus-ravaged India if the cases continued to rise at the current rate in the coming weeks.

Earlier, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) had announced that it will not be issuing new notes on Edi ul Fitr this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.“Like last year, we will not be issuing new banknotes on Eid ul Fitr due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic,” said the SBP in a statement.

NCOC also announced that comprehensive SOPs/guidelines will also be issued for Yom-e-Ali, Itekaf, Shabe-e-Wadar, Jumma-tul-Wida and Eid prayers by May 1.

Pakistan’s coronavirus positivity ratio jumped to 9.6% after the country reported over 5,000 new infections in the last 24 hours. According to the official data provided by the NCOC, 5,480 people tested positive for the coronavirus, after 57,013 tests were conducted across the country.

The total tally of COVID-19 cases now stands at 815,711, with most cases reported in Punjab. The number of recoveries nationwide has reached 708,193 so far, while the number of active cases in the country stands at 89,838 as of today.A day earlier, Pakistan reported the highest single-day death toll recorded since the pandemic started last year with over 200 new fatalities.

Ahsan Khan’s new offering, his signature clothing brand, is going to be launched soon

Muhammad Yasir

Ahsan Khan is a versatile actor, be it acting, hosting or modeling, he has equally excelled in all the mediums alike and now he has chosen a new venture to share his creativity and fashion sense with his fans and the public. Ahsan khan is launching a new clothing line entitled “Ahsan Khan Marca” and he is busy in promoting his trendy kurta designs during his tryst as a host on National Broadcast PTV’s Ramzan Transmission these days.

While talking to the media about his new business venture, mega star Ahsan Khan revealed about wearing some signature designs during live transmission. He briefed that “I wanted people to become a little aware of the brand through my show and then wanted to launch it with an exhibit at a major mall,” said Khan. “However, with the coronavirus spiking in Pakistan, I decided that a mall exhibit, with celebrity appearances, would be irresponsible. Now, we are only going to be launching the website.”

Ahsan khan shared that Pakistan’s Fashion Industry is rapidly growing and there is huge potential and market for quality products within reasonable prices that’s why he decided to launch a clothing brand that he had been working on with a few friends.

The new brand will focus on traditional wear for men, women and children, ranging from casual to formal-wear. The release date, a few weeks prior to Eid, makes sense. It is, after all, a time when all of Pakistan is focusing on tradition.

While sharing details of his future plans, Ahsan Khan revealed that this is not an instant decision, in fact this idea was in his mind from quite some time but he has to shift to Karachi for acting assignments and his plan for the high street brand came to a halt. But this new venture has now been started in collaboration with a few friends. We have a designer on board and a lot of our production is being done in Faisalabad. I want the brand to have mass appeal, with designs and prices that are affordable.”

The actor said he hopes to build Ahsan Khan Marca into a label that also offers accessories for men and women. “It’s a long-term plan, of course. But we have our production process in place and the website will be up soon. The first teaser is showing a family celebrating and also reveals the women’s clothing. We want to create appealing, affordable clothes that people will enjoy wearing.”

It is pertinent to mention that Ahsan khan is not only first star associated with business activity; in fact he will be joining a long list of celebrities who have dabbled in ready-to-wear. One remembers Humayun Saeed, Aijaz Aslam and Shahid Afridi stores dotting the local market long ago. There has also been an Aamir Liaquat label and of course the J. (Junaid Jamshed) behemoth with stores all over Pakistan and abroad. Most recently, Maulana Tariq Jamil launched a shiny, extensive MTJ store in Karachi.

Newsupdate times wish best of luck to Ahsan Khan for his new appealing  venture and recommends readers to share their experiences regarding designing and pricing of Ahsan Khan Marca Products with us.

Corona Pandemic disrupted the examination Schedule in Country

Muhammad Yasir

Corona Pandemic has disrupted the examination process in the country and all the exams of Matriculation, O & A Level and college students have been postponed till mid of June. Federal education minister Shafqat Mahmood announced that no examinations will take place in the country until June 15, amid a surge in covid-19 cases and deaths in different parts of the country.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad after a special National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) meeting, he said O and A level exams had been cancelled and would now take place in the October-November cycle. However, A2 exams will keep running for those students who want to appear for the purpose of applying to foreign universities.

“It has been directed strictly that after Monday, more than 50 people will not be in one centre. For that we have requested that schools be made venues,” the minister said, adding that law enforcement personnel will be deployed to maintain discipline and SOPs.

The decision comes after widespread calls from students, activists and politicians for the government to cancel the Cambridge exams in view of the third coronavirus wave.

Mahmood during the presser said a rapid increase had been seen in the disease since the last meeting held on the issue at the NCOC on April 18, when it was decided that exams would be held as per schedule. But because the country is moving in a direction where areas with high infection rates might be placed under a lockdown, he said, it was decided with consensus that “all exams will be cancelled until June 15”. The decision means that the exams of grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 that were due to start at the end of May stand postponed further, Mahmood added.

“We will continue analysing [the situation] and in mid-May or in the third week of May, we will analyse the disease and a decision will be made whether to further postpone exams or allow them to take place. This means that if exams are started after June 15, they could go into July and some part of August as well,” he announced.

“But despite doing all this, one section of students is left whose year will be wasted if they don’t sit the exams [now],” he said, referring to A2 students, which number around 20,000 in total.”After discussion, it was decided that students in A2 who due to some compulsion cannot postpone their exams beyond September, will be given the facility to take exams according to the date sheet they received, for their facilitation.”

Mahmood noted that Cambridge had announced that no extra fees will be charged for students shifting their exams to Oct-Nov, while other concessions would also be applicable.

“This is a difficult time. A lot of parents will be reassured [by the decision] that their children will not go to sit exams at a time when Covid is at a peak,” the minister said, emphasising that the decision had been taken in a “collective spirit” in the best interests of students’ future.

Speaking alongside him, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan said “strict compliance” of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) would be ensured at venues where A2 students were taking exams.

He said the number of critical Covid-19 patients in the country had surpassed 5,000, the highest since the start of the pandemic. “The third wave of the pandemic is intense and NCOC has taken a lot of steps for strict compliance of restrictions,” he added.

As is tradition with Pakistani students who have had a love-hate relationship with the Minister for Education over the course of the coronavirus outbreak in the country, Shafqat Mehmood once again rose to the top in Pakistan’s list of Twitter trends on Tuesday. Social media user hailed the education minister with cheerful mems and filmi dialogues.

Consistent Rise of Babar Azam and Muhammad Rizwan …

By Qasim Ali

Consistent Rise of Babar Azam and Muhammad Rizwan

Have Pakistan found the substitutes of Younis and Misba’s formidable duo.

Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam is carrying the “dream form” from quite some time, thanked to his consistent performance and after becoming the world number 1 ODI batsman by beating India’s Virat Kohli, Babar has achieved another milestone. Young star batsman became the fastest cricket player to achieve the landmark of 2,000 runs in the Twenty20 international format, having accomplished the feat in just 52 innings which is amazingly four matches less than Virat Kohli.

On the Other hand Muhammad Rizwan, the gifted wicket keeper striking batsman of Pakistani squad is also on fire these days. The brilliant batsman entitled “man of the series”, for carrying his bat second time in the series and coming out unbeaten and victorious. This was Rizwan’s 3rd half-century in run-chases, also the greatest number of half-centuries by a Pakistani batsman while chasing a target. Cricket circles are showering praise for Muhammad Rizwan’s fighting spirit and natural talent which is becoming a prime reason for back to back victories for Pakistan Team.

In Fact, due to combine consistent effort of Babar Azam and Muhammad Rizwan , Pakistan team defeated South Africa in home series and subsequently successfully emerged victorious in African Soil as well. Pakistan team also defeated, Zimbabwe in a close margin of 2-1, although this is not a major victory in the pretext of International arena, but the interesting part of this 3 match series is that Babar Azam and Muhammad Rizwan’s duo, who have taken the center stage in the batting line of Pakistani cricket team with back to back performance and it seems, Pakistan have found the perfect replaces of formidable Younis Khan and Misbah ul Haq.

Pakistani current coach Misbah ul haq have services and experience of Great Younis khan as batting coach of Pakistan young squad. Both legends helped lift Pakistan from the depths of the spot-fixing saga in England in 2010. Their calm approach and commitment was exactly what Pakistan cricket needed after the tumultuous period it had gone through. Both batsmen rose above the crowd and established their credentials as a top-class players and leaders of game.

Both the legend has achieved so many precious victories for Pakistan, be it test series triumph in the Caribbean soil, or wining the T 20 world cup for Pakistan. It was due to consistent performance of Misbah ul Haq and Younis Khan on the field as players and guiding force for rest of squad off the field and now they are performing same roles but in different capacities and surprisingly are nourishing the young talent which is quite capable of carrying the responsibility gracefully. According to the cricket circles, Muhammad Rizwan have outclassed the former captain Sarfraz Ahmad and time will decide that how they carry forward their careers and prove integral part of Pakistan line up like Misbah and Younis remained for nearly half a decade in the previous years.

In 2020, OPPO launched the second Renovators program, providing a platform for 3,000 students from 150 top universities around the world to unleash their creative imagination.

Making a significant and lasting impact on sustainability requires long-term thinking and commitment. OPPO will continue to further its own sustainability initiatives while collaborating with industry partners to create a better future for everyone.

The Fruits of Labor: Asif’s Journey towards Financial Empowerment

Asif’s Success Story

Asif’s success story is a testimony to the remarkable potential that financial inclusion features and is one to help people dream big, for their dreams can now materialize faster than they think.

In the small district of Pasrur, Sialkot, Asif Ali labored day in and day out to keep his fruit shop running amidst the unfortunate economic downfall that hits the rural citizen harder than the most. As the sole breadwinner of his family, he was under immense pressure to retain a stable source of income lest his children go hungry.

Despite being a skilled fruit vendor, hardworking and honest through and through, Asif lost his shop to the faltering economy, diving headfirst into the anxieties and troubles of unemployment that plague so many people across Pakistan. For some time, he struggled greatly to make ends meet and put food on the table.

Asif’s passion lay in fruit-mongering and he held on to his desire to own a business while taking work in a small fruit shop, earning minimum wage to barely scrape by. The experience, however, proved quite valuable as it lent Asif the unique opportunity to witness the do’s & don’ts to running a successful business, firsthand. Under the continued guidance of his employer, Asif’s affiliation with the fruit business grew stronger and he was more certain than ever that the best course for him was to run his store again.

His ambitions lacked the financial nudge that was necessary to get any venture off the ground, and so he continued to work on a meager wage. His fortunes turned, when in the year 2017, the loan officer from Mobilink Microfinance Bank, Pasrur, reached out to him, offering the capital he needed to realize his dreams.

In the first loan cycle, Asif Ali was granted PKR 100,000 which he used to launch his store and set up a stock of high-quality fruit. He maintained an affable relationship with the Bank during this time and repaid the loan in a timely and professional manner.

Almost immediately after that, Asif proceeded to apply for the second loan cycle which he used to further enhance his operations and assure quality products for his consumers. Things were now looking up, his anxieties about having an empty dastarkhwan were a thing of the past. Asif currently happens to be in the third loan cycle with the Bank.

“I worked hard and had the will to be successful but I could not have done it all without the Bank’s continued support. With MMBL on my back, I am bound to progress even more”, says Asif, the contented borrower.

Financial empowerment of the masses ought to be the prime priority of the government and financial institutions in a country like Pakistan where only 21% of the population is banked and poverty is rampant. Serving the unserved will not only add more people in the financial landscape of Pakistan but also improve prospects for them to be more educated, have better access and affordability for healthcare services, and enjoy a fulfilling life with reduced inequalities. Journeys like Asif’s are a testament to the unique power of transformation that microfinancing holds.

In Pakistan, as per the Asian Development Bank, the male proportion of employed population below $1.90 Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) per day in 2019 is 2.2% and its 2.7% for females. Financing and other efforts to boost the entrepreneurial landscape in Pakistan needs to continue further if we are to improve our rankings here and enhance poverty statistics for Pakistan.

Asif has recently installed a juicer machine at his shop and has multiplied his revenue considerably by twinning the loan borrowed with his hard work and perseverance. He continues to lead on the journey to make his life better, and his children’s more prosperous.

In the ongoing era, when digital is the ‘new normal’, Asif’s family continues to benefit from digital financial services and uses JazzCash for sending and receiving payments when needed. This has not only helped reduce the hassle in his work and save time, but also allowed more efficient as well as faster transactions while also aiding Asif in broadening the horizon of his work. Asif plans to further digitize his shop by offering online fruit delivery soon and receive payments through his digital wallet.

As a leading financial services provider, MMBL is largely focused on creating synergy between the rural and urban masses by connecting them through conventional as well as digital products and services, aiming to empower every Pakistani by being a catalyst of sustainable change.

TERMITE TROUBLE RISES DUE TO FLOODWATER SUBSIDE

By Farhat Ali

Termites are the creature that can breed in different environments. In these environments, the survival of termites underwater is observed for an extended amount of time. It is because termites need moisture to survive for a long time and this happens often time due to floodwater.

Hurricane Florence subsides that brings floodwater with it, the residents and the government have a lot to face in cleaning up. As the crews do their work, they face the danger of little termites due to severe storms. These termites prove the cause of fatal diseases as they can survive more in this moisture situation. They can hold their breath for about 20 hours and can drown if flood water persists for more days but most won’t. The rest of the time they try to survive in tree holes, wood, and in the walls of houses.

TERMITES CAN DROWN IN WATER FOR A LONG TIME

Dr. Gregg Henderson believes that in a flood situation, these termites are not able to move in an upward direction to the ground. Instead, these termites keep themselves away from drowning for the time being by staying in a static position to preserve oxygen. In this motionless condition, they can survive in the water for up to 16 to 30 hours, depending on the type of termite.

The survival strategy of termites breathe is along the sides of their body, which works through a system of holes (spiracles). These little holes help them to take oxygen and to exhale carbon dioxide. Besides, for extended periods of time, termites can close their spiracles if necessary.

In floods and hurricanes, termites make trouble a nightmare. These termites make the trees topple and the walls of houses easier to collapse. This condition gets more severe when climate change keep fueling faster wind speeds, torrential rainfall and flooding, and the hurricanes became more powerful.

Termite seems to be more problematic when the residents of flood-stricken areas already facing destruction and a massive cleanup. Termite issue is the major in these circumstances when people have to remold their homes after a flood.

TERMITES AFFECTED MASSIVE AREAS IN THE PAST

In the last few years, devastation to people and property is observed. The United States was devastated by massive flooding events from storms and heavy hurricanes. Although some populations of termites couldn’t survive, subterranean termites have many methods to survive in flood situations also. It is obvious that flooding from a hurricane like Florence is destructive for the residents but not for termites. The one good thing about these subterranean and other termites is that they don’t spread disease, “unless you count mental stress caused by entomophobia a disease,” Forschler said.

SUGGESTIONS TO CONTROL TERMITES AFTER FLOODWATER SUBSIDE

In order to repair the damaged houses, this infected wood should be transferred far away, to get rid of these termites permanently. In order to be more secure and to remold homes, termite control services and pest control services are provided through management professions that can suggest appropriate steps for remediation of star pest controls if needed.

Challenge Funds – The Karandaaz Experience

By Hussam Razi (The views expressed in this blog are the authors own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Karandaaz Pakistan)

Karandaaz has run 10 rounds of challenge funds in Pakistan, and some of the findings provide valuable insights that are worth sharing.

Karandaaz Pakistan is a unique player in the financial inclusion space in the country. With support from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), its objective is to work towards a financially included and economically empowered Pakistan.

To accelerate its efforts towards advancing financial inclusion, Karandaaz works in the following areas:

  1. Catalysing access to finance for SMEs
  2. Promoting financial inclusion through Technology
  3. Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  4. Undertaking research and surfacing insights to bridge knowledge gaps

While these programmes aim to impact the unserved and underserved populations and enterprises, Karandaaz also seeks to create a demonstration effect in the financial ecosystem in Pakistan. We do so through impact focused interventions, by partnering with financial institutions, digital financial service providers (DFSPs), women entrepreneurs and start-ups. We provide technical assistance grants for experimentation in digital financial services (DFS) and support innovative models to address financial inclusion gaps in the country. Our focus on innovation and experimentation is therefore a distinctive feature of our strategy. We adopted a widely appreciated mechanism, introduced by FCDO, of running a Challenge Fund to spur innovation in the financial sector in Pakistan. The idea of a challenge fund is to enable local entities and populations to identify best-fit solutions through a transparent and competitive process.

The FCDO defines a challenge fund as:

‘a competitive mechanism to allocate financial support to innovative projects, to improve market outcomes with social returns that are higher/more assured than private benefits, but with the potential for commercial viability’.

We felt that given Karandaaz’s unique position in the financial sector in the country, sponsoring and administering challenge funds will enable local actors to design solutions that are most suited to bridge gaps in the financial service mix offered in the country. In the past 4 years, Karandaaz has run 10 challenge rounds.

In our effort to continuously improve our programme interventions, we have learnt the following through administering the challenge rounds;

  • Undertaking in-depth research prior to launching a challenge fund is crucial:

Undertaking a problem analysis is imperative to running a successful challenge round. This research would involve, at the minimum, identification of the main stakeholders in a problem-solving journey, realizing the challenges that a problem-solving process can potentially face and understanding the external environment around a particular problem. Designing a challenge round based on this research, identification of clear expectations and especially defining success matrices is necessary to ensure that a challenge round is effective in its administration and results.

  • It is important to include sector experts throughout the process,

and not just at the ideation stage. We have observed that donor expertise, due to lean team structures and ambition to target large scale impact, is concentrated at the wider sectoral level. To conceptualize innovation and realize impact, expertise is required in niche areas. Therefore, an independent consultant can provide specific market knowledge and align the grantee towards achieving maximum impact. Moreover, subject specialists must be engaged at key points during the project lifecycle for timely advice and course correction.

  • When working with larger institutions, buy-in from top management is necessary

to drive the project and achieve the potential impact. We have historically attracted interest from various teams within larger organizations, who have seen the challenge rounds as a platform for testing and scaling their ideas. These ideas, otherwise, would not get significant traction due to corporate targets and structures that impede innovation. However, we have learnt that while the teams may be eager and motivated to participate, lack of interest from top management results in the teams having conflicting priorities, which slows decision making and implementation. This affects the ability of the grantee to be optimally involved in the project.

  • When working with larger institutions, risk sharing is essential:

Our experience demonstrates that if the grantee institutions (larger financial industry actors) have skin in the game, they are more likely to align their efforts in achieving the desired outcome. Our learning here emanates from the fact that financial institutions have substantial capital that can be invested to compliment the grant amount, and without their complimentary investment, grantees are likely to face conflicting priorities further down the project lifecycle. Therefore, to scale ideas, having a participatory transactional structure may be more effective.

  • Having a progressive programme of support:

When working with startups or small businesses as part of challenge fund rounds, we have found that financial grants may only be one of the ingredients for success. Grants, if accompanied with a progressive programme of support, such as need specific trainings (on financial, structural, operational aspects), mentoring and the possibility of further capital injection, can be more effective in achieving scale and sustainability of ideas. This programme of continuous support also serves as an incentive to graduate out of the challenge round. Grantees with clear growth potential can prove to be game changers if provided longer term support and useful linkages.

  • Some ideas will fail:

An important learning we have had is that out of all ideas supported, some will not succeed. This may be a due to a variety of reasons, including poor design, the lack of regulatory support, to diverging priorities of the grantee etc. It is essential that key performance indicators (KPIs) and clear milestones are attached to a grant to track performance. At the same time, donors should be ready to walk away from projects mid-way if results are not convincing.

  • Distant donor engagement will not work:

Many good ideas lose steam because of some of the issues discussed above. However, proactive and regular donor engagement can keep implementation on track and ensure senior management support, in case of larger organizations.

While Karandaaz remains committed to solving some of the pressing issues in Pakistan’s financial inclusion ecosystem, our learnings have helped us adjust our strategies and designs of challenge rounds. We have capitalized on these learnings to ensure that outcomes are effective and sustainable.

After running the first round of the Women Entrepreneurship Challenge (WEC 2017), we evolved our design by adding mandatory Business Development Support for all shortlisted applicants. This enabled the applicants to refine their ideas, enhance their capacities for pitching the ideas to judges, and completing the necessary pre-requisites of formalizing their businesses. After running the second round of the Women Entrepreneurship Challenge (WEC 2018), our learnings suggested that institutionalizing the challenge round will enable wider impact and more comprehensive support. Our new, better designed, programme is now called Women Ventures, which accepts applications throughout the year and has invested in more than 29 women led businesses throughout Pakistan.

The Fintech Disrupt Challenge run by the DFS team at Karandaaz also went through a cycle of improvements. Round 1 of the challenge solely comprised of a grant whereas business development support and mentorship were also provided in Rounds 2 and 3. We also realized that Fintechs face challenges in securing partnerships with larger financial institutions and through Karandaaz’s platform, we were able to actively bridge this gap. Additionally, to create awareness of our winning grantees, we invested in marketing collateral to advertise the Fintechs’ association with Karandaaz, which led to confidence in the Fintech and its idea, from the wider industry.

As we invest in additional women led businesses through the Women Ventures programme and showcase the outstanding potential they possess, we are certain that financial institutions will follow suit. Similarly, as most Fintechs supported by Karandaaz have now secured formal partnerships with commercial banks, we believe we are now geared towards creating a significant demonstration effect in the financial inclusion ecosystem of Pakistan.
