Indus Motor Declares Rs 4.8 Billion Profit After Tax for First Half FY20-21
Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) The Board of Directors of Indus Motor Company (IMC) released its financial results for the half-year ended December 31, 2020.
IMC’s combined sales of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) and Completely Built-up Units (CBU) units increased by 82% to 26,362 units against 14,453 units sold in the same period last year. The Company produced 26,383 vehicles, registering an 81 % increase, as compared to 14,555 units produced in the same period last year. IMC’s market share in the overall market stood at approximately 24.7% for the half year ended December 31, 2020.
The Company’s net sales turnover for the half year ended December 31, 2020, increased to Rs. 79.65 billion as compared to Rs. 42.78 billion, for the same period last year, while profit after tax increased to Rs. 4.8 billion as against Rs. 2.3 billion achieved in the same period last year.
The increase in turnover and profitability for the half-year period was mainly owing to higher CKD and CBU volumes, and increased other income due to improved cash flows. However, cost increases mainly due to Rupee devaluation eroded the gross profit margin to 7.55% against 8.81% in same period last year.
The Company experienced an overwhelming response to Toyota Yaris in the first, as well as second quarter of fiscal year 2020-21 which contributed to volume increase in Passenger Car segment. Moreover, Fortuner TRD variant was launched in October 2020 which too was well received by customers.
The Auto policy introduced in 2016 will end by June 2021. The policy enabled green field investments in the auto industry to reach the 500,000 units of annual production capacity, with multiple brands and product offerings. Consumer purchasing power was revitalized, and a reduction in interest rates led to an increase in auto financing, which contributed to demand in the first half of FY 20-21.
The Earnings Per Share of the Company for half year ended December 31, 2020 stood at Rs.61.08 as compared to Rs. 29.32 reported during the same period last year. The Board of Directors with pleasure, have declared second interim cash dividend of Rs. 25 per share for the half year ended December 31, 2020, compared to Rs. 6 per share, for the same period last year.
Expressing his views, CEO IMC, Ali Asghar Jamali, stated, “Overall, the automobile industry is clearly bouncing back. The economic upturn following the gloom and despair hovering over the auto industry during the COVID-19 lockdown, owes itself to the Government’s timely decision to ease the lockdown and introduction of favourable policies. Reduction in interest rates has been another factor that led to an increase in auto financing, bolstering consumer confidence.”
He further added, “We thank our valued customers who have always placed their trust in our products, as well as all our employees, stakeholders and shareholders for their sustained support.”
During the period, the Company received accolades, winning the “Most Outstanding Company in Pakistan 2020 (Automobiles and Component Sector)” awarded by Asiamoney, and the “Best Sustainability Report Award 2019” conferred by the Joint Committee of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan and Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan.
2020 LNG demand holds steady despite COVID-19
2020 LNG demand holds steady despite COVID-19, set for growth as global economies recover
Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade increased to 360 million tonnes in 2020, according to Shell’s latest annual LNG Outlook published today, despite the unprecedented volatility caused by the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in lockdowns around the world.
Though marginal, the increase in volume reflects the resilience and flexibility of the global LNG market in 2020, a year which saw losses to global GDP of several trillion dollars as economies large and small struggled to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. Demand in 2019 stood at 358 million tonnes.
Global LNG prices hit a record low early in the year but ended the 12-month period at a six-year high as demand in parts of Asia recovered and winter buying increased against tightened supply.
“LNG provided flexible energy which the world needed during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating its resilience and ability to power people’s lives in these unprecedented times,” said Maarten Wetselaar, Integrated Gas, Renewables and Energy Solutions Director at Shell.“Around the world countries and companies, including Shell, are adopting net-zero emissions targets and seeking to create lower-carbon energy systems. As the cleanest-burning fossil fuel, natural gas and LNG have a central role to play in delivering the energy the world needs and helping power progress towards these targets.”
Natural gas emits between 45% and 55% fewer greenhouse gas emissions and less than one-tenth of the air pollutants than coal when used to generate electricity.
Demand rebounds in Asia
China and India led the recovery in demand for LNG following the outbreak of the pandemic. China increased its LNG imports by 7 million tonnes to 67 million tonnes, an 11% increase for the year.
China’s announcement of a target to become carbon neutral by 2060 is expected to continue driving up its LNG demand through the key role gas can play in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, namely buildings, heavy industry, shipping and heavy-duty road transport.
India increased imports by 11% in 2020 as it took advantage of lower-priced LNG to supplement its domestic gas production.
Two other major Asian LNG-importing countries – Japan and South Korea – also announced net-zero emissions targets in 2020. To meet its net-zero target, South Korea aims to switch 24 coal-fired power plants to cleaner-burning LNG by 2034.
Demand in Europe, alongside flexible US supply, helped to balance the global LNG market in the first half of 2020. However, supply outages in other basins, structural constraints and extreme weather later in the year resulted in higher prices.
LNG market to 2040
Overall, global LNG demand is estimated to hit 700 million tonnes by 2040. Asia is expected to drive nearly 75% of this growth as domestic gas production declines and LNG substitutes higher emission energy sources, tackling air quality concerns and meeting emissions targets.
For instance, China’s heavy-duty transport sector consumed nearly 13 million tonnes of LNG in 2020, almost doubling from 2018, to serve the fast-growing fleet of well over 500,000 LNG-fuelled trucks and buses. LNG-fuelled shipping is also growing, with the number of vessels expected to more than double and global LNG bunkering vessels set to reach 45 by 2023.
As demand grows, a supply-demand gap is expected to open in the middle of the current decade with less new production coming on-stream than previously projected. Just 3 million tonnes in new LNG production capacity was announced in 2020, down from an expected 60 million tonnes.
According to estimates, more than half of future LNG demand will come from countries with net-zero emissions targets. The LNG industry will need to innovate at every stage of the value chain to lower emissions and play a key role in powering hard-to-abate sectors.

“Innovation isn’t just about solving the challenges we face today,” said Hu.
Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) At the opening ceremony of Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2021, Huawei’s Deputy Chairman Ken Hu spoke about the huge impact that COVID-19 has had on countries, enterprises, and people around the world, as well as the role technology plays in combating the pandemic.
“Innovation isn’t just about solving the challenges we face today,” said Hu. “It’s about lighting up tomorrow. Once we get the pandemic under control, we need to think hard about how we can innovate to improve quality of life, make businesses smarter and create a more inclusive world.” He explained that, while unequal access to digital technology and digital skills has widened the digital divide, the pandemic has made the situation significantly worse. “We have to focus innovation on bridging the gap between the haves and have-nots, and on driving digital inclusion”.
COVID-19 has created many new requirements for digital infrastructure. Over the past year, Huawei has worked closely with carriers to ensurethe stable operations of more than 300 networks across 170 countries. In Indonesia, Huawei employed a new digital delivery technology to rapidly deploy over 50,000 base stations. As we look towards recovery,” Hu said, “We need to ensure that innovation isn’t just about today. It’s about lighting up tomorrow and creating greater social value.”
During his keynote, Hu showed the audience Huawei’s Cyberverse app, an advanced AR application that demonstrates how 5G networks, 5G devices, and AR technology can converge to create a more immersive virtual experience, whether it be a lifelike forest ora simulation in outer space. The new app makes it possible to seamlessly integrate virtual and physical realities with high-precision, centimeter-level positioning capabilities, massive computing power, and high-bandwidth transmission through 5G. Huawei expects Cyberverse to create many new growth opportunities in multiple sectors, including education, entertainment, tourism, transportation, and navigation.
In recent years, technologies like 5G, cloud, and AI have begun playing an important role in manufacturing, accelerating the transition to more intelligent and flexible operations. Hu explained how Huawei’s own Dongguan South Factory is currently using 5G networks with cloud-based AI applications in its 5G smartphone production lines to drive huge productivity gains.
Opportunities abound in the digital transformation space. Huawei predicts that, by 2025, 97% of all large companies will use AI. Other estimates for 2025 include that 55% of China’s entire GDP will be driven by the digital economy, and 60% of global carrier revenue will be derived from industry customers. Hu noted that, to achieve these projections, “all industries should focus on improving their capabilities, building out the ecosystem, and creating value with digital technology.”
Huawei is also working closely with customers and partners to drive innovation in 5G. The company is currently working with ecosystem partners to develop devices targeted at meeting specific industry needs. Through joint innovation and strategic partnerships with its customers, Huawei aims to drive 1 to N expansion of 5G applications for business. The company is also working to coordinate 5G communication and industry standards to more rapidly scale up 5GtoB applications.
Hu reported that, in collaboration with its partners and regional carriers, Huawei has signed more than 1,000 contracts for industrial 5G applications in more than 20 industries.
While pivoting to address the pandemic, Hu warned that the world faces a real risk of K-shaped economic recovery once COVID-19 is brought under control. He predicts an increasingly wide divide between organizations and people who actively benefit from digital technology and those who do not. In order to avoid unbalanced development, bridge the digital divide, and promote inclusive growth, Hu emphasized that the focus of innovation needs to shift to producing greater social value.
Hu stressed that, while the pandemic closed many doors, innovation has opened new windows of hope. He concluded that, through ongoing innovation, Huawei will continue to pursue open partnerships with its customers and partners to help industries go digital and make life better, businesses smarter, and the world more inclusive.

Capture the Infinite with First-class Camera System
Thanks to 5G, video watching, downloading, and sharing will be even quicker and easier than before. Over the past few years, video has proven to be one of the most essential mediums for people to express themselves, making high-end video capabilities a priority for OPPO in the Reno series. Bringing this into reality with Reno5 Pro is a 64MP rear quadcam matrix and a 32MP front camera. These are further enhanced by the OPPO Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System, an imaging system designed for superior portrait video effects. The system is composed of two engines, the Quality Enhancement Engine and the Portrait Perception Engine. The Quality Enhancement Engine helps capture clear video in any conditions, no matter whether in night or backlit scenes, while in motion or standing still. The Portrait Perception Engine on the other hand defines fine-grained criteria for portrait effects to help deliver naturally processed human subjects and backgrounds videos. Together, the highly-intuitive system delivers an unmatched experience that not only captures portrait videos in perfect quality but does so in a way that can help users to maintain their unique style.
Powered by the FDF Portrait Video System, Reno5 Pro takes portrait video quality to the next level with AI Highlight Video on both front and rear cameras, and Reno series’ excellent Ultra Steady Video 3.0 for upgraded image stabilization. AI Highlight Video is the first feature in the industry to automatically detect the ambient light in a scene and improve the video ‘s quality accordingly by applying OPPO’s industry-leading Ultra Night Video Algorithms and Live HDR Algorithms. In the case of dark environments, Ultra Night Video Algorithms will come into play automatically to brighten the scene, while detection of backlit scenes will engage Live HDR Algorithms to reduce overexposed areas. Both functions leave videos with better exposure and brightness, less noise, and clear and natural colors with just one click of the “AI” button while in video mode.
Besides the high-quality video, Reno5 Pro also introduces a series of video features to bring creative and portrait video shooting to your fingertips. With Dual-view Video, you can use both the front and rear cameras simultaneously, providing two perspectives within the same frame in videos. AI Color Portrait and Monochrome Video apply AI algorithms to retain colors of specified subjects while turning all other areas monochrome, drawing the audience’s attention towards the subject. 960fps Smart Slow-Motion helps showcase the fullest detail of even the briefest moments while keeping the focus automatically locked on the moving object.
Furthermore, OPPO’s powerful and user-friendly video editing app, SOLOOP, is now accessible from Reno5 Pro’s camera interface, giving you the option to edit high-quality videos at ease with professional-quality video templates and editing tools.
For photography, Reno5 Pro users can take photos at a resolution of up to 108MP from the rear camera, capturing unprecedented image quality and details. On top of that, Image-clear Engine is introduced to help capture crisp photos of moving subjects or take snapshots, increasing the photographic hit rate of capturing crystal-clear shots in any conditions by 31.5% compared with Reno4 Pro. Other features also help users capture and create more atmospheric photos: Night Flare Portrait takes clear night portraits and accentuates night lit scenes with a natural bokeh effect; AI Scene Enhancement provides tailored optimization for color, saturation and brightness in 22 different scenes, including cats, text, fireworks, sunrises & sunsets, etc.
