Raj world’s first woman past 10,000 runs

(NUT News Desk ) Mithali Raj became the first Indian woman cricketer to pass 10,000 international runs on Friday, as she made 36 in a one-day match against South Africa. Raj´s knock took her total to 10,001 runs across three formats, before she fell to the next ball from Anne Bosch in the third of five ODIs in Lucknow.

Sachin Tendulkar, the world´s leading run-scorer in men´s cricket, congratulated Raj, saying on Twitter: “Terrific achievement… Keep going strong!” England´s Charlotte Edwards, who quit international cricket in 2016, remains the leading scorer in the women´s game, with 10,273 runs in Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 matches. Raj, 38, who retired from the T20 format in 2019, has accumulated 6,974 runs in 212 ODIs since making her debut in 1999. She led India to the finals of the 2017 Women´s Cricket World Cup only to lose the final to hosts England. India´s women´s team will play a one-off Test in England later this year, six years after playing their last five-day game in 2014.

China denies plan for $1 bn Alibaba fine

, as authorities turned up the pressure on the country´s vast technology sector. Alibaba, China´s largest online shopping portal, has been in the crosshairs of authorities in recent months over concerns of its reach into the daily finances of ordinary Chinese people.

The market´s regulator denied it was planning to fine the company almost $1 billion for anti-competitive behaviour, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, who cited unnamed sources “familiar” with the matter. However, on Friday it hit 12 other tech firms — including giants Tencent, Baidu and ByteDance — with symbolic fines for allegedly flouting monopoly rules. Tencent was fined $77,000 for its 2018 investment in online education app Yuanfudao without seeking prior government approval for the deal, the State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement Friday. Search giant Baidu has to pay the same amount for acquiring consumer electronics maker Ainemo under the radar in 2014.

Beijing has warned it will take an increasingly ruthless approach to antitrust questions. Premier Li Keqiang last week said the government would “strengthen anti-monopoly laws” and “prevent the disorderly expansion of capital”. Analysts said Friday´s blizzard of fines send a strong signal of the Communist Party´s dominion over the country´s tech landscape. “These penalties send a message: the economy and everything within it must comply with the state´s directive,”

Nokia, Samsung ink patent license pact

STOCKHOLM: Nokia has struck a deal with Samsung to license patents covering its innovations in video standards, the Finnish telecom company said on Thursday.

While the companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement, Samsung will make royalty payments to Nokia.

Nokia’s patent portfolio is composed of around 20,000 patent families, including over 3,500 declared essential to 5G.

The deal comes months after rival Ericsson filed a lawsuit in the United States against Samsung in a dispute over royalty payments and patent licenses.

The US International Trade Commission said last month it would open an investigation after Ericsson claimed Samsung had infringed on some of its patents in 4G and next generation 5G wireless cellular communications infrastructure systems.

Tax refunding through automated CITRO system

In view of prime minister’s vision for maximum facilitation to taxpayers under FHB guidance, a Centralized Income Tax Refund Office (CITRO) has been established at the FBR for taxpayers by releasing income tax refund payments directly into their bank accounts in an transparent manner. This would work in an end-to-end automated manner.
Member IR (Operations) inaugurated the launch of CITRO by processing the first batch of Income Tax refund claims for payment through dedicated VPN tunnel established between the FBR and State Bank of Pakistan. This is indeed another milestone achieved by the organization through incessant efforts of Member IR Operations and Member IT of FBR.
This system would eliminate human interaction between the tax authority and taxpayers as well as ensuring quick relief to the business community.
The FBR is in the process of enhancing this automation process to the next level by creating linkages between all federal and provincial departments as well as large numbers of withholders, so that verification and processing of refund claims can also be made in a machine-enabled environment.

Battle drags as world marks pandemic anniversary

THE HAGUE: The world on Thursday marked one year since the coronavirus threat was declared a pandemic, with vaccinations offering hope but much of humanity still enduring highly restricted lives and no clear path back to normality.

The enormity of the continuing global challenge was reflected in a stark warning by the International Council of Nurses that an exodus is looming of healthcare workers traumatised by the pandemic.

“They reach a point where they´ve given everything they can,” ICN chief executive Howard Catton told reporters.

While restrictions are easing in many parts of the world, hotspots persist such as Brazil, which on Wednesday reported a record 2,286 deaths in a single day as more contagious new variants fuel a surge there.

“It took a long time for the politicians to act… We are paying for it, the poor people,” said Adilson Menezes, 40, outside a hospital in Brazil´s biggest city Sao Paulo, where all non-essential businesses are closed to help fight the virus.

On the economic front, the US Congress passed one of its biggest stimulus efforts ever — a $1.9 trillion package that President Joe Biden said would give struggling American families a “fighting chance”.

Since first emerging in China at the end of 2019, the coronavirus has killed more than 2.6 million people and forced unprecedented curbs on movement that eviscerated economies.

The World Health Organization officially declared Covid-19 a pandemic on March 11 last year as infection numbers were beginning to explode across Asia and Europe.

About 4,600 deaths had been officially recorded around the world at the time.

But with the United States only just starting to feel the direct impacts of the pandemic, then-president Donald Trump played down the threat.

“The virus will not have a chance against us,” Trump told the nation.

Under his chaotic leadership, the United States would become the hardest-hit nation: the American death toll today stands at more than 528,000.

3,000 nurses dead, Covid exodus looming: global federation

Geneva: At least 3,000 nurses have been killed by Covid-19, the global nurses´ federation said Thursday as it warned of a looming exodus of health workers traumatised by the pandemic.

Exactly one year on since the World Health Organization (WHO) first described Covid-19 as a pandemic, the International Council of Nurses said burn-out and stress had led millions of nurses to consider quitting the profession.

And once the pandemic is over, a dwindling number of experienced nurses could be left to handle the giant backlog of regular hospital care that had been postponed due to the crisis, the ICN warned.

The known death toll of nurses killed by the disease — compiled from just 60 countries — is likely to be a gross underestimate of the full total, the federation said.

ICN chief executive Howard Catton said nurses had gone through “mass traumatisation” during the pandemic, being pushed to physical and mental exhaustion.

Millions of women deprived of contraception in pandemic

PARIS: Some 12 million women may have lost access to contraception due to pandemic health disruptions, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency said Thursday, warning that the poorest and most vulnerable were the hardest hit.

UNFPA, based on 115 low-and-middle-income countries, found that a loss of family planning services for around three months had likely led to 1.4 million unintended pregnancies. “Covid has wrought havoc on the women and girls of the world. But the poorest and the most vulnerable now are seeing the most dire consequences,” UNFPA Executive Director Natalia Kanem said. She said data suggested “that in wealthier countries, fewer babies are being born, whereas in developing countries — more babies, lack of access to contraceptive services”. Lockdowns, fears of contagion and travel to health facilities led to fears over access to family planning when the virus began to spread globally last year, while global supply chain disruption has also posed a challenge.

UNFPA said that recent evidence suggested there were concentrated declines in family planning services in April and May, but that many countries were able to restore access after that. Its new projections used anonymous Google Mobility data for grocery stores and pharmacies as a proxy for access to essential services. They suggested that 12 million women may have been unable to access family planning because of the pandemic, although its estimates were a broad range from four million to 23 million.

Daraz Ibtida – A platform for female entrepreneurs to build a sustainable income

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Daraz, the leading E-Commerce platform in Pakistan, has announced the launch of “Ibtida” on this International Women’s Day with the mission to empower local female entrepreneurs on its platform. Ibtida is a program that will enable women to establish online shopping stores on Daraz and take advantage of the platform’s hundreds of thousands daily active users, generate higher sales and grow their businesses.

This initiative is a promising source of sustainable income for small and large business owners to get access to ecommerce technology during these challenging economic times and will empower females to run their own stores while sitting at home.

Daraz as a platform has spearheaded successful seller empowerment initiatives previously as well and given financial support of up to PKR 8 crore during COVID lockdown and supported 45,000+ sellers previously. With the launch of Ibtida, Daraz aims to empower specifically women, who otherwise might not get as many opportunities to sell with ease in the offline markets due to societal pressure and cultural norms.

Through this program, Daraz offers 0% commission, free packaging and storage to female sellers for the 90-day incubation period. The sellers will also have access to Daraz University which is a customized learning center to help sellers belonging to different cohorts improve their performance. Additionally, through business performance manager sellers will also have access to insights from seller marketplace business performance tools.

In line with International Women’s Day’s theme for the year, “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,” Daraz also steps forward to celebrate efforts by women and extends its support to shape a more equal future during recovery from COVID-19 pandemic. Even though women were at the forefront of the battle against COVID, they were paid 11% less than men. This initiative that has been launched by the platform will add to the efforts made for gender equal future.

“Women get a lot less opportunities than men; and even when they do get an opportunity, there is either a descrimination either in the form of salary or the responsibility/trust that is placed upon women. We want to change that. Women are equally capable of doing whatever men do and hence should be compensated equally.” Said Arusha Imtiaz – Global Head of Seller Marketplace at Daraz. She also further added that, “There are a lot of talented women who can make something as simple as a scarf while sitting at their homes and start earning money. They don’t do that right now, because there aren’t a lot of options to start online businesses in Pakistan right now and selling in the offline markets is a concept that is not acceptable for women in our society. But this is unfair and unacceptable. With DarazIbtida, we want to encourage female sellers to start online businesses.”

Daraz provides services to more than 5 million customers every month as they are looking forward to this initiative bringing a unique and diverse product range for its customers.
