NBP signs MOU with PTA

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir)  Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and National Bank of Pakistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for provision of consumer financing facilities to PTA employees.

The MoU is aimed as mutually beneficial for both the organization and it will further strengthen NBP’s partnership with PTA. NBP is capitalizing on its large corporate relationships by offering specialized priority services and awareness sessions for the employees of large corporates like PTA to meet their personal banking/financing needs and banking to employees’ workplace for facilitation and better customer service.

Mr. Faisal Ahmed (SEVP & Group Head – Consumer Assets Group, NBP) and Mr. Muhammad Abdur Rub Khan (Director – Payroll & Cash, PTA) along with other senior executives of NBP and PTA were also present to grace the occasion.

Both organizations will also pave the way for bringing banking to employees’ workplace for facilitation and better customer service. The arrangement will further support access to banking finance for PTA employees.

Making education viral: TikTok, Edkasa and LUMS partner to make Pakistan #ExamReady

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir)  TikTok has partnered with Edkasa and LUMS to launch a digital learning programme to facilitate online education and distance learning for high school students. Driven by TikTok, the programme #ExamReady will promote digital learning designed to help millions of Pakistani students. In this first of its kind year-long partnership, TikTok, Edkasa and LUMS will collaborate to bring to life over 500 educational videos online covering Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, including study tips and exam hacks. The Syed Ahsan Ali and Syed Maratib Ali School of Education at LUMS will provide guidance on teaching methodologies and cover monitoring and evaluation of the project whereas Edkasa, as the implementing partner, will develop all content and host it on TikTok and other social media profiles. The programme’s first round of content is expected to go live in August this year. The announcement comes at an opportune time for Pakistan that is seeing pressure on its low- and middle-income groups with education costs becoming a cause for distress. In a country where access to high-quality educational content remains a major hindrance to human development, Edkasa has achieved over 15 million minutes of viewing time in 2021, enrolled over 145,000 students, and 129 online courses. With demographics of over 140 million Pakistani citizens below 30 years of age, while more than 10 million currently enrolled in high-schools, the partnership could not have come at a better time. TikTok, home to 1 billion monthly average users globally, will help disseminate the content to millions of Pakistani students through its platform. KE acts against defaulters; over 30,000 connections disconnected

Karachi (Nut Desk)  in its efforts to avoid wastage of electricity, KE has disconnected 30,000 connections in the last one week across Karachi due to non-payment of bills. 
According to KE’s Spokesperson, “non-payment of bills contributes significantly to the losses in an area increase and creates hindrances for the consumers making regular payments. We humbly request our consumers to ensure timely payment of bills to ensure efficient power supply to the city.”
Speaking about the city’s power supply situation, KE’s spokesperson said that over the last 24 hours average supply to KE’s service territory was 2,950 MW electricity which included 1050MW from the National Grid.

Pakistan holds unique position in Asia for maximum digital banking consumers

These views were expressed by financial experts belonging to the banking and technology sector during a discussion on “Visionary Banking in Pakistan”. The discussion was hosted at lunch at the Schatzalp Hotel, Davos by Pathfinder Group of Companies in collaboration with Martin Dow Group during the World Economic Forum. Participants included United Bank President Shazad Dada, Bank of Punjab President Zafar Masud, U Bank President Kabir Naqvi, CEO i3 Pathfinder Group Syed Tassawur Hussain, and CEO iPath Ali Shah Asani, while CEO VRG Salman Ali moderated the session. Pathfinder Group Chairman Ikram Sehgal welcomed the participants and the audience and introduced the distinguished guests.

He said that Pakistan’s banking sector was growing rapidly due to tech advancements. Highlighting the importance of digital banking and mobile wallets, Ikram Sehgal called them the credit cards of deprived people. Initiating a discussion on the role of banking industry in Pakistan and its future, UBL President Shazad Dada said that the banking sector was going through a revolutionary period and digital banking was becoming increasingly popular not only in this sector but also in the national economy playing the most important role.

Shazad Dada shared important figures with the audience through his presentation on “Visionary Banking in Pakistan”. He said that in this age of technology, modern banking was taking full advantage of innovative inventions like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT). He also discussed the benefits of digital banking and the issues facing it.

The President of UBL said that Pakistan was currently one of the leading countries in Asia in terms of using mobile banking, key reason for the confidence of the younger generation in digital banking. Commenting on financial inclusion and poverty alleviation, Shazad Dada said that banks could play a key role in this regard. The global pandemic has had a huge positive impact on digital banking and its usage increased exponentially. Highlighting the performance of UBL on this occasion, Shazad Dada said that UBL had recently emerged as one of the most profitable banks in Pakistan which was made possible due to the tireless work of the entire team.

Zafar Masud, President of The Bank of Punjab, said that harmonization with traditions and culture was very important for successful banking. On this occasion, a special documentary on Pakistan was also shown. He said that in this age of technology, the banking sector was facing many challenges and it was only by tackling them that we could achieve the target of visionary banking. Zafar Masood informed the audience that future banking would depend upon five pillars, namely consumer & community, strategy & branding, staff & environment, governance & compliance, and operations & technology.

Kabir Naqvi, President of U-Bank, highlighting the importance of micro financing in the national economy, said that microfinance banks were doing their utmost to bring the deprived segments into the mainstream through financial inclusion. He said that Pakistan’s telecom sector, while playing a transformative role in the banking sector, had connected innumerable unbanked people with mainstream banking, which was a very important step in the country’s economy. Naqvi described the performance of U-Bank in the last seven years as a success story and said that establishing branches in remote areas of the country had provided access to the most backward populations through modern technology. Tassavur Hussain mentioned customer experience as the key to doing business, without which an organization cannot progress.

Ali Shah spoke in favor of innovation commenting that those who fail to innovate and take a risk are the first to perish. In response to a question regarding the further expansion of the banking sector during current economic crisis of Pakistan, Zafar Masud said that tough times bring opportunities to do something new, and if the banks stepped ahead with better policies and offered their services to public during these troubled times, all crises could be resolved. Answering a question regarding the cryptocurrency in Pakistan, Shazad Dada said that it was being discussed and regulators would soon come up with a plan of action in this regard by taking all safety measures.

At the end of the session, Pathfinder Group Chairman Ikram Sehgal briefed the participants on the excellent performance of Pakistan Pavilion on the occasion of World Economic Forum this year, and thanked all the individuals and organizations who contributed in this regard.
