IRC Ensures Quality Healthcare for the People of South Waziristan and Orakzai

Peshawar (Muhammad Yasir) To swiftly rise above the challenge left behind by the pandemic, the International Rescue Committee’s 14-month intervention “Strengthening Healthcare including Nutrition in Emergencies,” (SHiNE) is benefitting men, women and children in Orakzai & South Waziristan districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Through this program, 150,000 men, women and children have so far benefitted from the state-of-the-art health facilities set up in their areas. Among them are 45,000 women and children, who, previously had to travel long distances to avail of basic health services.

Over 100 deliveries have also been supported by trained, gender-sensitive healthcare providers at the target facilities. Over 12,000 women and children have been screened for malnutrition and 1,390 cases have been enrolled in community-based programs for rehabilitation. It has also proved instrumental in creating awareness about hygiene, healthcare services and increasing their uptake.

The initiative launched with the support of the European Union, and in partnership with the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Medical Emergency Resilience Foundation (MERF) focuses on improving access to health facilities by strengthening the system to cater to specific needs under maternal, newborn, and child health care. It also covers integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities, in the vicinity of the targeted health facilities coupled with awareness-raising for infection prevention and improved health-seeking behaviours.

The International Rescue Committee has urged the federal and provincial governments to mainstream integrated health interventions that are tailored to the unique needs of the most vulnerable populations across the country.

The Country Director of the International Rescue Committee, Ms. Shabnam Baloch, said “Our recent experience of working in South Waziristan and Orakzai districts has shown that integrated health interventions targeting the specific needs of vulnerable populations can go a long way in service improvements, community engagement, encouraging long-term public-private partnerships, and systems strengthening. These are all necessary prerequisites to increase coverage, efficiency, and the quality of healthcare services,”

Chief Executive Officer at MERF, Dr. Shah Miran stated “For the first time in decades the provision of comprehensive healthcare services has been ensured in hard to reach areas like Mamoozai in Orakzai and Angor Adda in South Waziristan while the people of Shaktoi belt in Anakhel have finally witnessed the operationalization of a Basic Health Unit (BHU) in their area which remained non-functional for over two decades,”.

This public-private partnership has played a key role in revitalizing the health systems, encouraged repatriation, and created a strong public demand for the continuity of such services. “The provision of nutrition supplies in the target areas that have food insecurity and acute malnutrition as high as 20%, is not less than a blessing at a time when inflation, starvation, and lack of agricultural productivity are already taking a toll on the poorest of households” added Dr. Miran.

The SHiNE intervention, which is in direct support of the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to provide uninterrupted quality healthcare to the underserved populations of the NMDs deserves greater attention by policymakers and legislators. Important lessons learned from this program, if replicated and mainstreamed can have a lasting, positive impact on Pakistan’s overall health & nutrituion indicators.

On World Emoji Day, Meta shares trends for Pakistan’s favorite Emojis

This World Emoji Day, Mark Zukerberg announced that WhatsApp now allows users to react to messages and group chats with a full range of fun emoticons and skin tone selector within conversations. Earlier users could only use six emojis to react to messages and group chats, which has now been changed to the full Emoji keyboard to make conversations more lively and fun.

In addition, Meta has also revealed trends on our favourite Emojis and how they are being used in Pakistan and around the world.

What’s new on WhatsApp Emoji dock?

Trends show Emojis are quickly becoming the universal visual language understood by all. From Gen Z to Baby Boomers, people from all generations find it convenient to ‘speak’ Emoji when it comes to connecting with friends and family, co-workers and acquaintances.

That is why; Meta has been expanding its emoji dock with newer emojis to help people communicate with more nuance and range. Here are some of the newest emojis popping up in our conversations and WhatsApp and Emojipedia have explained what each of them actually mean to settle the dispute amongst users:

  •  Blue cap: Most of us are likely to get this one wrong. The meaning of this unsuspecting headgear in a digital conversation is much deeper than we could have guessed.
  • Melting Face: is the new hot favouriate but just like the blue cap this one is also likely to be misinterpreted.
  • Skull: This one is the most misunderstood of all. Commonly denoting figurative death, the skull has found new meaning and purpose with the Gen Z in Pakistan and around the world.
  • Taking notes: This is what each one of us should be doing right now to excel in the art of digital communication.

Facebook Trends in Pakistan

In addition to WhatsApp, Emojis also come in handy in keeping conversations informal, frank and warm on Facebook and Instagram. Meta trends show Facebook users all around the world used a wide range of fun emoticons, topped with a new range of emojis each with fun meaning and usability to convey their feelings.

The Meta trends shed light on who we are in our digital lives, our likes and dislikes and the way we respond to life situations in digital communications. Pakistanis are no different and our increasing dependency on visual-based communication has led to a new vocabulary of emojis, GIFs and camera-based messaging, which is making us more expressive than ever before. The semiotics associated with each emoji live and thrive within our cultural environment and their meaning and relevance grows over time.

Like other parts of the world, in Pakistan too, some emojis clearly remained the top favourites for their ability to translate people’s emotions and situations people find themselves in or their age group and gender.

Amongst the newly released emojis on Facebook, (FACE_HOLDING_BACK_TEARS) remained the top favourite in Pakistan, followed by (FACE_WITH_PEEKING_EYE), SALUTING_FACE, (Heart_Hands), and (MELTING_FACE).

Pakistan’s young Gen Z users, aged between 18-24 years used the️ ️ (RED_HEART) the most, followed by (FACE_WITH_TEARS_OF_JOY), (HEAVY_BLACK_HEART), (Thumbs_up) and (ROLLING_ON_THE_FLOOR_LAUGHING).

Millennials, aged 25-44 years old also preferred the ️ ️ (RED_HEART) the most. (Thumbs_up) and FACE_WITH_TEARS_OF_JOY remained the second and third most favourites on their list.

Lastly,Gen-X and Baby Boomers, aged 45 and above were no different in their choice of visual communication. They also preferred the ️(RED_Heart), and (Thumbs_up) apart from the (TWO_Hearts) to convey their feelings.

Sports are one of the most popular sets of emojis on Facebook. In Pakistan, on Facebook (Golfing), (Soccer Ball) and (Bow and Arrow) topped the list of favourite sports emojis. While Soccer remained the most popular sports emoji globally,  While on Instagram (Cricket) topped the list, followed by (Soccer) and ‍️(Weightlifting) in Pakistan.

The Gen Z in Pakistan was found to be using the most diverse emoji set in their conversations like (Ambulance), (Clown face), (Skull), (Upside Down face) and more to express themselves.

There are so many emojis on the Meta platform that it is hard to remember the meaning of each one of them. In such a case, the Emojipedia (https://emojipedia.org/) can serve as the perfect guide to the universal visual language.

realme 9 4G’s 108MP Ultra-Clear Camera & First-ever HM6 Sensor – The Changing Face of Smartphone Photography

realme’s newest entry into the Number series of phones packs a powerful punch for photographers

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) When purchasing devices in the mid-range, consumers have learnt to manage their expectations. Often times one would have to pick and choose between different smartphone options by making a compromise on certain features. This dilemma has become a concern of the past due to realme’s commitment to providing high quality options in the mid-range segment. realme’s drive to innovate has brought many successes in the past such as with the realme 8 Pro which was the tech democratizer’s first 108MP camera smartphone. The previous generation number series phone made waves in the minds of the public owing to its stellar camera setup. In modern times, a smartphone’s main camera has become one of the most important features of your device. Whether you want to snap a picture for social media or video chat with your loved ones, the smartphone’s camera quality is of paramount importance. This is why realme is bringing a new and improved 108MP ProLight camera setup in the upcoming realme 9 4G.

On the surface it may seem like the camera setup is the same as the realme 8 Pro but beneath the surface the realme 9 4G is the very first smartphone to come equipped with the brand new Samsung HM6 sensor allowing it to deliver superior results. The realme 8 Pro came equipped with a previous generation HM2 sensor. The brand new HM6 sensor should deliver a 123% increase in light sensitivity for the realme 9 4G as compared to the realme 8 Pro’s HM2 sensor. Equipped with 108 million pixels as small as 0.64μm, the ISOCELL HM6 sensor has the ability to render your captured memories with stunning high-definition detail. The advanced sensor also supports 3x lossless zoom which allows you to capture smooth and accurate images no matter how close or far from the subject you are.

Apart from all these revolutionary features, the ISOCELL HM6 sensor is the first to adopt the Nonapixel plus technology. This upgraded pixel binning technology has drastically improved the way it combines and utilizes light information allowing it to take bright and clear pictures even in extremely low light environments. The products of merging nine pixels at once are 12MP images with a noise level comparable to a 1.92μm big pixel. Smart-ISO allows the ISOCELL HM6 to adjust to the lighting conditions by intelligently choosing High or Low ISO mode. In conditions of dim lighting, High ISO mode converts light to a signal with higher conversion gain to illuminate details in the shadows. The process of multisampling follows which combines High ISO and Low ISO shots to reduce noise by averaging multiple frames into one. The realme 9 4G’s ISOCELL HM6 sensor has four times more autofocusing agents than the previous 0.7㎛ 108MP ISOCELL model. With its higher autofocus pixel density, you can capture fast-moving objects easily with little to no loss of image clarity.

The ISOCELL HM6 is not just great at capturing photos, it can capture highly detailed videos as well. With support for video recording at 8K 24FPS and 4K 120FPS, the high-tech sensor allows you to record moving images in both regular and slow-motion mode in incredible detail. By introducing the HM6 sensor to the market via the realme 9 4G, realme is building on its legacy of facilitating access to the latest in the tech world for its loyal consumers. This first of its kind tech makes low-light photography a piece of cake. However, the realme 9 4G is much more than a glorified camera.

The next-level handset also comes equipped with a Snapdragon 680 (6nm) processor, 90Hz Super AMOLED Display, Holographic Ripple Design, and so much more.

So keep your eyes on store shelves for the realme 9 4G when it arrives starting Saturday, July 16, 2022.

Sarsabz Fertilizer marks the significance of cotton through the nostalgic journey of ‘Khaki Desan’

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) The nostalgic memories of our mothers opening rustic family trunks and taking out hand-knitted khaees and dariyan made from indigenous cotton and proudly setting them for the frequent guests have faded away. However, to try and revive this lost cultural heritage and tradition, Sarsabz Fertilizer released the second episode of its Sarsabz Kahani web series titled “Khaki Desan” which focused on the true story of Jugnu Mohsin, a well-recognized entrepreneur and public figure, who quickly realized the dearth of good quality local cotton and its dying breed called Khaki Desan which nobody was striving to preserve. This latest film is part of a strategic initiative called ‘Sarsabz Kahani’, which highlights true inspirational stories of farmers passionately fond of their motherland and its cultural heritage and was released on the momentous occasion of Eid ul-Azha as a short film on July 10, 2022, across its social media platforms.

Seeking technical assistance from Sarsabz Fertilizer, which is a brand of Fatima Fertilizer, the protagonist went on to successfully harvest the finest crop of Khaki Desan cotton to create an exceptional quality of khaddar, which is a hand-spun and hand-woven cotton cloth being used in the sub-continent since many centuries. Sarsabz Fertilizer extended their unravelling contribution and support to Jugnu Mohsin to implement this community support program as a sustainable initiative which can re-engage and empower a community of thousands of rural women in the centuries-old craft of cotton spinning and weaving and earn a decent livelihood for their families. Sarsabz also supported Jugnu Mohsin in setting up a workshop under the name “Haveli Crafts” to market the final products.

The story of this unique collaboration is multifaceted in many ways. Most importantly, it refers to the recent decline of cotton production in Pakistan which is detrimental to our economic stability. As per the Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, the cotton crop holds a 0.8 percent share in GDP and contributes 5.2% to the agriculture value addition. Cotton also holds a 51 percent share in the country’s total foreign exchange earnings. Despite this economic significance, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has reported that in the past 10 years cotton production has almost halved from 13.6 million bales in 2011/12 to about 7 million in 2020/21. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has also reported that the crop area of cotton has significantly reduced to 2.2 million hectares, the lowest since FY82. Although in the current context, the economic survey of Pakistan for FY 2021-22 reported that the cotton crop increased from 7.1 million bales reported last year to 8.3 million bales during 2021-22. However, this gradual recovery in crop yield is faced with many challenges including a significantly reduced crop area, inconsistent gas supply to fertilizer plants resulting in limited availability of locally produced urea, and increasing cost of farm inputs for an already burdened farmer due to high market inflation.

Pakistan’s economy is largely dependent on the cotton industry and its related textile sector, and the crop has been given principal status in the country due to its integral role in economic development. Increasing the crop yield of cotton is the need of the hour given its economic significance. Also, marketing of local cotton varieties and products can also help boost our foreign exchange earnings and increase export profitability margins.
