OPF provides toolkits to returning migrants for better employments

Islamabad (Muhammad Yasir) Under the government’s initiative of facilitating the returning migrants in economic reintegration in the country, the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) has presented toolkits to returning expatriates in various trades as an in-kind support to help them start sustained self-employment.

The toolkits were presented at a ceremony held here on Tuesday to as many as 80 returning migrants in trades including electrician, plumber, carpenter, and mason, who have also completed comprehensive business development training at the Pakistani-German Facilitation & Reintegration Centre (PGFRC), Lahore.

OPF Managing Director Dr. Amer Sheikh, GIZ officials, members of Senate and National Assembly Standing Committees on Overseas Pakistanis and HRD, Members, OPF Board of Governors, representatives of international organizations and civil society also attended the ceremony.

The activity is part of the OPF efforts to support returning migrants to make a new start in Pakistan and achieve a sustainable employment. OPF is implementing a program on economic reintegration of returnees in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Pakistan. It is commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation & Development Germany, (BMZ) and is part of BMZ support for voluntary return and sustainable reintegration.

In his remarks, Dr. Amer Sheikh shared that an MoU between German and Pakistan governments has been formalized which is the start of a new dawn in the area of support to the returning migrants. This arrangement will support in counselling and introduction to employment or entrepreneurship measures.

Addressing the audience, Dr. Mansoor Zaib Khan, Head of PGFRC, informed that the Centre is open to all Pakistanis and all our services are free of charge. PGFRC is providing advice on training and skills development, technical and vocational training, advice on job market trends and opportunities, advice on finding a job in Pakistan, entrepreneurship and start-up support, psychosocial support, and information on the health system in Pakistan, information on living conditions and advice on getting microfinance and loans, he explained.

He informed that more than 800 returning migrants in the trades of electrician, plumber, carpenter, and mason will benefit from this capacity building leading to in-kind support intervention.

Country Director GIZ, Mr. Tobias Becker, said on the occasion that the PGFRC is playing a critical role in fostering self-employment and entrepreneurship. These efforts are resulting in enhancing the capacity of workforce and reducing unemployment rates in Pakistan, he added.

Moreover, he said, it not only helps to contribute to the better life and wellness of returning migrants but also achieve the Agenda 2030 as well as Sustainable Development Goals.  

He explained several Pakistanis migrate abroad to work, but at some point, in their lives, they return to the country and struggle to re-establish themselves and make a respectable living. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Pakistanis living in other countries, resulting in huge layoffs and the return and repatriation of tens of thousands of migrants from their intended destinations. When they return, they are very concerned about their job prospects. In these times of trial, the PGFRC is the platform for these returnees to seek guidance and support, he maintained.

The 2nd stop of Huawei Connect 2022 will be running in parallel with GITEX GLOBAL 2022 on October 11th and 12th at Madinat Jumeirah. 

CM Sindh asks NADRA to organize database of flood-affected people

Karachi (Muhammad Yasir) Chairman NADRA gave a briefing on the development and provision of data related to ongoing relief activities in flood-affected areas of Sindh. Briefing the CM Sindh, Chairman NADRA informed that NADRA employees, offices and NADRA operations have also been badly affected due to unprecedented torrential rains and floods. He said that NADRA as a national organization is facing various challenges due to the situation created by floods and heavy rains. He said that on the one hand our employees are facing personal problems due to flooding situation and on the other hand they have started the process of making identity cards of flood affectees after restoring their affected operations. He said that the NADRA offices in Sindh were damaged due to floods and heavy rains. 38 office buildings were severely affected by the rains due to which the operations of NADRA were also temporarily stopped. Tariq Malik said that rehabilitation work was started on 20 affected NADRA offices on emergency basis. Technical systems and equipment were secured and operations were resumed by completing immediate rehabilitation of the buildings. He said that additional mobile registration vans (MRVs) have been deployed outside the offices at all flood affected Tehsils so that the flood affectees can submit their ID card application by just giving their thumb prints. Chairman NADRA said that taking immediate action, NADRA administration has deployed 18 mobile registration vehicles in the flood affected areas so that the flood victims can easily process their ID cards and get reliefs funds. He said that especially mobile registration vehicles have been deployed in Tehsil Pano Akil, Kandhkot, Thull, Dokri, Thari Mir Wah,Pir Jo Ghot and Mehrab Pur to manage the influx of flood affectees at the offices at the these Tehsils. While giving a briefing, Chairman NADRA said that apart from this, NADRA has extended the date of expiry of CNIC till 31 December 2022 in all the flood-affected districts of Sindh, including Badin, Dadu, Ghotki, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Jamshoro, Qamber Shahdadkot, Kashmore, Khairpur, Larkana, Matiari, Mirpur Khas, Nowsheroferoz, Sangarh, Shaheed Benazirabad, Shikarpur, Sajawal, Sukkur, Tando Allah Yar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Thatta, and Umarkot. In the briefing, Chairman NADRA said that the houses of 34 NADRA employees were completely damaged due to flood while the houses of around 700 employees were partially affected. Considering the current situation in the flood affected areas, NADRA’s role in relief activities and timely response is commendable, he informed. He informed that NADRA offices in Kandhkot, Qaziabad, Shahdadkot, Dokri, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Thari Merwah and Mirpur Mathelo were completely affected by the flood water where NADRA operations are still suspended. Tariq Malik informed the Chief Minister Syed Murd Ali Shah that NADRA is coordinating the process of identification of the unidentified bodies of the flood victims with the district administration along with providing facilities to the citizens regarding ID cards.

TransKarachi & NED University Sign MoU for Capacity Building Initiatives

Karachi (Muhammad Yasir) TransKarachi, a public sector company established and owned by the Government of Sindh to carry out the project implementation of the $504 million Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) Red Line, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), with the reputable Nadirshaw Eduljee Dinshaw (NED) University of Engineering & Technology. Following the partnership, TransKarachi and NED University will collaborate on capacity building initiatives in the areas of transport infrastructure, drainage design as well as resource optimization and gender mainstreaming to facilitate the performance of the entire KBRT Red Line network for citizens of Karachi. The two institutions will also work on research projects and papers with an emphasis on developing traffic flow models, real-time traffic measurement tools and smart traffic controls and jointly execute surveys, focus group discussions and interviews to create awareness about urban public transport and address gender-based violence.

To mark the occasion, an MoU Signing Ceremony was held at the Senate Hall, Main Campus – NED University on the 15th of September 2022.
