GUARD GROUP ADDS ANOTHER FEATHER TO ITS CAP

LAHORE (ZAHID CHUGHTAI)

After successfully promoting the sowing of hybrid rice in Pakistan which brought prosperity to the farmers and enhanced the crop size, Guard Agricultural Research & Services (Pvt) Limited has joined hands with another Chinese food giant Litong Food to promote the sowing of high-yielding hybrid chillies in Pakistan over an area of 8,000 acres of land. Under the umbrella of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) agriculture programme, both companies have plans to grow Chinese hybrid chillies and then export back all the production to China. Initial estimate of export potential of this joint project is US$ 500-550 million. As per the initial negotiation between the two sides, Litong Food in collaboration with the Guard Group of Pakistan will sow high-yielding hybrid chilli crop over 5,000 acres of land during the coming season while another 3,000 acres will be sown on its own in Pakistan. As per the plan, this area under the chilli crop will be increased to 200,000 acres of land in the future. Setting up a processing plant after achieving 50,000 metric tons of hybrid chilli production and a breeding station to ensure the transfer of technology to chilli production is also part of the proposed collaboration. Guard Agricultural Research & Services (Pvt) Ltd, Executive Momin Ali Malik said that the Chinese government has shortlisted its two companies under its CPEC projects in Agriculture & Livestock. Litong has been selected for Agriculture while Royal Company has been selected for livestock projects. He said his company is already experimenting with the sowing of high-yielding hybrid chilli seeds produced by another Chinese company ‘Paprika’ in Pakistan for the last six years and got very encouraging results. He claimed that the Chinese company keeping in view the track record of successful promotion of hybrid rice, chilli and tomatoes contacted them to work in collaboration with them. It has also been planned to set up a 500 acres model farm in Southern Punjab which will start working by the end of October after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both companies. Sixty per cent of the planned 5,000 acres of land will be in Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Kunri, Matli and Mirpur Khas areas of Sindh while 40 per cent will be in Multan, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan in South Punjab. ‘Hybrid Chilli gives three picking per sowing and a production of 600 maunds per acre in contrast to traditional varieties which give only 200 maund per acre,’ said Momin Ali Malik said and added that contracts will be made with interesting farmers with a buy-back guarantee of their crop. Farmers will get the market rate plus a premium for their produce under this agreement. Chairman of Litong Food will soon be visiting Pakistan most probably in the second week of October 2022 to sign an MoU in this regard, Malik concluded.

Transgenders – the new norm in corporate environments.

Dina Savul

10,418 persons have been identified as transgenders in Pakistan. Although the number isn’t very high, transgenders are extremely discriminated against. Simply defined a transgender person is someone whose gender identity or gender expression does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth. In 2018, Pakistan’s government passed a very positive legislation on transgender rights, a law called the “Transgender Protection of Rights Act.” This law provides legal recognition to transgender persons and prohibits discrimination and harassment. Having said that, inclusivity towards trans people has not been much in the corporate environment. The harsh reality of intolerance and a sweet harmony of acceptance came side by side, where some companies still can not come to terms with managing the female gender inclusivity, for them adding on transgenders to the workforce is unheard of. When given the task to research on the inclusion of transgenders in the workplace environment, I made it my job to try and find a solution to tackle this issue. Although most organizations have not implemented this, some have already begun making their workplace more affirming and inclusive of transgender people. During my research, I spoke to the head of HR of an FMCG company and ran a survey with 65 senior participants from various industries across the country. It was enlightening to hear their positive responses. Multiple NGOs are currently giving much needed vocational training to transgender population fit for mainstrem roles. They are being upskilled in a way where they hit the ground running on joining in. Unfortunately our academia is not at all open to equality, hence most of such miss out on good education. This should not be the case. Therefore the role of these NGOs become highly critical. It doesn’t stop there! Organizations need to then sensitize their staff, create gender neutral policies, advocate for gender neutral spaces / washrooms, have inclusive healthcare systems, evaluate roles and job descriptions and finally understand their challenges and embrace them as equal beings. Taking little steps like these can help our country evolve and become more diverse day by day. After all, when it comes to trans employees, true inclusion is not just about creating a more diverse workplace; it’s also about making sure organizations are treating all employees equitably when it comes to opportunities, benefits, and people’s everyday experiences when they go to work. The only way forward is to make everywhere inclusive for women, men and trans people to be able to work together.

She is very professional in her work. Working with her was a great experience. I am rich in the role, I have tried hard to play my role, he said, I tried to give something universal to the film industry of Pakistan. I belong to Iran, I am an Iranian Baloch. It is not allowed to say otherwise. But the passion in me and the art in my soul didn’t stop me from chasing my dreams instead of making light of what people said. I started my career with modeling and a reality show. I got offers for many TV dramas but I decided to take off in TV commercial modeling and the film industry.
