Thousands of Volunteers United for a Global Peace Event

Volunteer Teams of Airport Guide, Drivers, Interpreters, Media, Medical, Security and Installation Dedicated to the Safe and Successful International Event.

Pakistan (Nut Desk)

A grand-scale peace event was held in South Korea from September 18 to 20 with stable operation and participants’ satisfaction. Themed “Implementation of Multidimensional Strategies for Institutional Peace,” the world peace event hosted by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) with the contribution of 2,000 volunteers was set to welcome over 800 global leaders from 121 countries representing diverse sectors including politics, education, youth, women, media, and religion from around the globe.

At the heart of this grand occasion was the dedicated Airport Team, working tirelessly to ensure the smooth arrival and departure of participants. Their responsibilities spanned from issuing visas to ticketing, guaranteeing the safety of participants, and even handling unforeseen flight disruptions. In their unwavering commitment to safety and order, they left no stone unturned to ensure a seamless airport experience for all.

The skilled drivers from the HWPL Convoy Team as another group of volunteers undertook meticulous vehicle inspections to transport the participants with comfort and safety. Their professionalism and dedication left a lasting impression on visitors. The total distance driven by volunteer drivers during the event was approximately 800,000 km, or spinning 20 times of the globe.

Volunteer interpreters also played a vital role in facilitating communication in sessions of the summit. Their commitment to connecting communications ensured a meaningful experience for all involved. “All of the 800 guests participating in over 30 sessions require interpretation. And all materials have to be translated into over 20 languages. Not only private organizations but also most national forums do not operate on such a large scale. Our HWPL interpretation and translation volunteers are carrying out this entire process,” said a volunteer interpreter.

The broadcast media team, consisting of 208 volunteers, worked to capture and convey the essence of the summit to a global audience. “I believe that our videos serve as a powerful tool for spreading a culture of peace, making this event accessible to people around the world in various languages,” said a volunteer.

The medical department prepared a wide range of emergency medicines, from simple digestive medicines, to this event. They are all active doctors, oriental medicine doctors, nurses, volunteering to contribute to peace. Team leader of the Medical Department explained, “Because it is an event held by a private organization, many people do not know whether a medical team is prepared.” At the same time, he added that guest-room-visit for medical checks were also conducted.

All staff in the Security Department, which is responsible for the safety of personnel, are not professional security guards but volunteers made up of able-bodied men and women who have gathered for peace. In relation to this, Deputy General Manager of the Security Department, said, “For the event, about 400 Security Department members received continuous education and training starting in March with actual simulations.”

The installation team was responsible for the critical infrastructure necessary to make the event a success. They handled electrical setups, stage installations, and maintenance throughout the event, ensuring a seamless experience for attendees.

“All of these volunteers, driven by their passion for peace, are working tirelessly to support the peace summit, and their unwavering commitment is truly remarkable. We HWPL would like to appreciate their dedication and hope that the government will support this peace movement,” said a HWPL official.

HWPL, a South Korea-based international peace NGO affiliated with the UN ECOSOC and the UN DGC, has carried out global peace movements for world peace and cessation of war since its foundation in 2013. South Korea recently suffered from the recent 2023 World Scout Jamboree with global participants with poor management and apology from the government.

Environment & Climate Change Documentary Series “The Voices from the Roof of the World” Season 2.

Environment & Climate Change Documentary Series “The Voices from the Roof of the World” Season 2 Wins John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Reporting on the Environment at Columbia Journalism School.

Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir) The second season of the documentary series, The Voices from the Roof of the World  (VRW), has won the prestigious John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Reporting on the Environment at Columbia Journalism School.  The series explores the climate crisis in high-mountain Asia and the billions of people that depend on the rivers that flow from these mountains.

This award comes barely a month after the documentary series was selected to participate in the prestigious TV Series Festival Berlin. This month, one of the episodes in the series, ‘The Valleys our Ancestors Chose’ won an award at the South Asian Short Film Festival.

Aga Khan University President Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin said, “These awards are testament to the need for impactful storytelling around environmental sustainability and climate change. Environmental stewardship is a priority for the AKDN and AKU for which a key part is increasing the understanding of the horrific impact of climate change, especially on vulnerable communities, and the responsibility that all of us have in any way small or large to protect our environment.”

The continuing stream of awards for the Voices from the Roof of the World Series shows is not only testimony to the incredible film making talent in the region but also shows that the appreciation for the importance of climate change is increasing. This is very encouraging, since many people in the mountains see their habitats threatened today, making climate change adaptation an absolute priority.” said Onno Ruhl, General Manager at Aga Khan Agency for Habitat.

The series captures the spirit and resilience of the people who call this region their home, providing an intimate portrayal of their daily lives, traditions, and struggles. The documentary series has garnered widespread acclaim for its captivating storytelling, breathtaking visuals, and its ability to foster cross-cultural understanding.

With over three decades of expertise in creating documentaries and reports and having been honoured with eight Emmys in the news and documentary category, VRW executive producer Andrew Tkach had a different angle for this series. He wanted to immerse the audience into the lives of the mountain people through stunning visuals and heartfelt interviews.

“We wanted to ensure that the voice of the voiceless is heard. The communities living around the Himalayas are resilient, strong and are committed to protect the mountains. Together with the talented filmmakers, we wanted to share their stories with a global audience,” said Tkach.

The 10-part series was produced by filmmakers from Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Nepal: Andrew Tkach, Abdullah Khan, Tolik Godomamadov, Janyl Jusupjan, Asmita Shrish, Shanta Nepali, Aibek Balymbetov, Iskender Aliev, Karim Shallwanee, and Tazeen Bari.

The John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Reporting on the Environment at Columbia Journalism School is given annually for news reporting that makes an exceptional contribution to the public’s understanding of environmental issues.  It recognizes journalists whose work meets the highest standards of journalistic excellence. The selection of The Voices from the Roof of the World reaffirms the series’ continued commitment to delivering compelling narratives and shedding light on overlooked communities.

Voices from the Roof of the World is a joint initiative of the Aga Khan Development Network agencies: Aga Khan University, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, Aga Khan Foundation, and the University of Central Asia, with the support of Ross Beaty, the Sitka Foundation and the Jenabai Hussainali Shariff Family[TT1] [co2] [MH3] .  VRW trains, mentors and supports young Asian filmmakers to produce groundbreaking environmental films about the consequences of climate change for the people and wildlife that are the least responsible for global warming but already shouldering its catastrophic impacts. The films also show how by combining local knowledge and innovation, these communities are finding ways to adapt and fight to save diverse ecosystems and precious water sources.

PepsiCo Pakistan and WWF-Pakistan Partner to Inaugurate Coastal Clean-up Project in Karachi

Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir)

PepsiCo Pakistan has launched a Coastal Clean-up Project in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan at the Karachi Fish Harbour. This project is a part of PepsiCo’s global PepsiCo Positive (pep+) sustainability agenda that encompasses various environmental and sustainability initiatives to do good for people and the planet. It is based on a scoping study conducted by WWF-Pakistan for waste quantification and characterization of coastal sites in Karachi to identify the interventions which will be implemented as part of this project.

The overarching goal of the Coastal Clean-up Project is to collect and control the dispersal of plastic waste through a comprehensive coastal clean-up activation. In addition, the activation will also generate awareness among the local community and relevant stakeholders about recycling and proper waste disposal.

PepsiCo associates were joined by WWF-Pakistan team members as well as relevant stakeholders from key government organisations including Sindh Environmental Protection Agency, National Institute of Oceanography, Marine Fisheries Department, Sindh Fisheries, Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority, and the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum. The event also marks the formal inauguration of a litter boom installation, which is a floating barrier designed to tactically prevent litter from continuing to float into water sources.

Ghazi Salahuddin, Regional Head Sindh and Balochistan, WWF-Pakistan, while inaugurating the event said, “Our oceans are burdened with waste which is impacting the health of our marine ecosystems. Addressing coastal littering, caused largely by human activity and movement, is paramount if we are to conserve nature.”

During the session, Basit Pirzada, Senior Manager Public Policy, Government Affairs and Sustainability at PepsiCo Pakistan, highlighted the need for plastic collection and recycling. He further shared PepsiCo Pakistan’s extensive work on advancing the circular economy of plastics with stakeholder alignment, including various government offices including the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Government of Pakistan.

Basit Pirzada added, “PepsiCo is committed to tackling plastics collection, recycling, and the circular economy of plastics. Our PepsiCo Positive (pep+) agenda is focused on creating a world in which plastic never has to become waste. We are further galvanizing our efforts by empowering stakeholders such as WWF-Pakistan to implement transformational technologies to address immediate issues and create awareness for long-term impact and meaningful on-ground change. In addition, we are leveraging the power of our brands to mainstream public awareness about issues of proper waste disposal and recycling to support the safety of our riverine, coastal, and marine habitats.”

While concluding the event, Nazifa Butt, Head Climate & Energy Program, WWF-Pakistan, emphasised on the need of such projects by stating, ” There is an urgent need for activities and clean-up projects that enhance public awareness of managing debris along our coastline. Through corporate engagement, we can expedite the deployment of locally manufactured technologies to address the issue of plastics in our oceans and rivers, while also supporting broader policies focused on waste management and plastics reduction.”

“The Voices from the Roof of the World” Season 2 Selected for TV Series Festival Berlin

Karachi (Muhammad Yasir)

The second season of the documentary series, The Voices from the Roof of the World  (VRW), has been selected to participate in the prestigious TV Series Festival Berlin. The series explores the untold stories and remarkable lives of the remote communities in the Himalayas.

With more than three decades of expertise in creating documentaries and reports, and having been honoured with eight Emmys in the news and documentary category, VRW producer Andrew Tkach had a different angle for this series. He wanted to immerse the audience into the lives of the mountain people through stunning visuals and heartfelt interviews.

“We are thrilled and honoured to have Season 2 chosen for the TV Series Festival Berlin,” said, Tkach. “This recognition reflects the dedication and passion of our talented filmmakers, as well as our commitment to sharing these extraordinary stories with a global audience.”

Voices from the Roof of the World is a joint initiative of the Aga Khan Development Network agencies: Aga Khan University, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, Aga Khan Foundation, and the University of Central Asia. The documentary series reflects the agencies’ dedicated teamwork and innovative execution, who have been a strong voice of action to help communities deal with climate change disasters while conserving the environment. Through this series, select young Asian filmmakers have been trained, mentored and supported to produce groundbreaking environmental films.

The TV Series Festival Berlin is recognized as a leading international platform that celebrates exceptional television series and documentaries. Each year, the festival brings together industry professionals, filmmakers, and audiences to showcase outstanding storytelling and diverse perspectives. The selection of The Voices from the Roof of the World reaffirms the series’ continued commitment to delivering compelling narratives and shedding light on overlooked communities. The second season is poised to make a significant impact at the TV Series Festival Berlin, joining an exceptional line up of international content. The festival serves as a hub for global filmmakers and industry professionals to connect, collaborate, and inspire audiences with their powerful narratives.

The first season of the Voices from the Roof of the World exploring local climate change solutions in mountainous areas had also won recognition at the TV Series Festival Berlin last year.
