Bear rampaging through Japanese city shot dead

TOKYO: Hunters shot and killed a brown bear in northern Japan on Friday after it rampaged through a city, injuring four people including a soldier and lumbering across busy roads.

The city of Sapporo tweeted that the bear had been “exterminated,” with a local television station saying hunters had shot the bear. Earlier, dramatic news footage showed the bear bounding along a residential street, crossing a busy road and clawing at the gates of a military barracks, causing alarmed troops to scatter. One soldier was injured in the bear´s rampage in the city, which will host the Olympic marathon and racewalking events in August.

Another victim was mauled by the bear after it attacked him from behind, TV footage showed. The person was taken away on a stretcher. The rampage prompted local school closures and the cancellation of several flights at a small regional airport, NHK reported. Earlier, government spokesman Katsunobu Kato told people in the Hokkaido region to be on alert.

“A total of four people, including one Self-Defense Forces member, have been attacked and injured by the brown bear. We express our sincere sympathy to them,” he said. “Officials from Sapporo City, the Hokkaido police, a local hunting association and other concerned agencies have arrived at the scene. They are coordinating efforts to capture the brown bear, or if deemed necessary, exterminate it.”

Cleric Raisi tipped to win as Iran votes for new president,

TEHRAN: Iranians voted Friday in a presidential election in which cleric Ebrahim Raisi is seen as all but certain to coast to victory after all serious rivals were barred from running. After a lacklustre campaign, turnout was expected to plummet to a new low in a country exhausted by a punishing regime of US economic sanctions that has dashed hopes for a brighter future.

The supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, cast the first vote in Tehran and then urged Iran´s nearly 60 million eligible voters to follow suit before the scheduled close of polls at midnight (1930 GMT). “The sooner you perform this task and duty, the better,”the 81-year-old Khamenei said, stressing that voting “serves to build the future” of the Iranian people.

But enthusiasm has been dampened by the disqualification of many hopefuls from the race and the deep economic malaise which has sparked spiralling inflation and job losses, the crisis deepened by the Covid pandemic.

“I´m not a politician, I don´t know anything about politics,” said Tehran car mechanic Nasrollah. “I have no money. All families are now facing economic problems. “How can we vote for these people who did this to us? It´s not right.”

Iranian opposition groups abroad and some dissidents at home have urged a boycott of the vote they see as an engineered victory for Raisi, the 60-year-old head of the judiciary, to cement conservative control.

Others queued to vote at schools, mosques and community centres, some carrying Iran´s green, white and red national flag. One conservative mother wearing the black full-body chador came with her two young sons dressed in the camouflage uniforms of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

A nurse named Sahebiyan said she supports Raisi for his pledge to fight corruption and because she hopes he will “move the country forward… and save the people from economic, cultural and social deprivation”

Robots start serving Aabe Zamzam in Makkah ahead of Hajj

NUT Desk- MAKKAH: Robots began handing out bottles of sacred water (Aabe Zamzam) in Makkah this week in preparation for a socially distanced Hajj pilgrimage in Islam´s holiest city, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Saudi Arabia announced on Saturday that 60,000 residents vaccinated against the coronavirus would be able to perform the July pilgrimage — a number up from last year but drastically lower than in normal times.

Some 2.5 million Muslims from around the world participated in 2019. Officials hoping to prevent any coronavirus outbreaks rolled out the small black-and-white robots on Sunday, each loaded with three shelves of water bottles, as a few devotees helped themselves with a mixture of bafflement and amusement.

“The aim of these robots is to provide personal services without any human contact,” said Bader Al-Loqmani. He manages water from the sacred spring of Zamzam which emerges in Makkah´s Grand Mosque. “Roughly 20 robots are currently available for helping visitors and pilgrims at the hajj,” Loqmani said, noting that more could be brought on stream if necessary. For centuries, pilgrims have flocked to drink water from the Zamzam spring, seen as miraculous in Islamic tradition.

Hundreds of thousands of bottles of Zamzam water are usually distributed each year. The Hajj is one of the five pillars or key duties of Islam, but for the second year in a row will only be permitted for vaccinated residents of Saudi Arabia.

Germany buys data from Dubai in crackdown on tax fraud

NUT Desk- BERLIN: Germany has purchased data from an anonymous source in Dubai on millions of taxpayers worldwide in a bid to crack down on tax evasion, the finance ministry said.

The data provides information on people who own land, property and other assets in the Gulf emirate, including several thousand Germans, the ministry said in a statement. The aim is to identify tax offences such as undeclared income, assets that have been hidden from the authorities and illegal cross-border transactions, it said.

The Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) paid around two million euros ($2.4 million) for the data, according to Der Spiegel magazine. “With this new data, we are illuminating the dark corners in which tax offenders have been hiding until now,” said Finance Minister Olaf Scholz. “Now it is the turn of the tax investigators to track down the offenders and bring them to justice. In this way, we will ensure that everyone makes their fair contribution,” he said.

The data was handed over to the Germany´s federal states on Wednesday for examination so that they can decide whether to initiate criminal proceedings, the ministry said. Several German states have over the past decade bought CDs or USB memory sticks allegedly containing data on German taxpayers who had parked their fortunes in Swiss banks. Fearing prosecution, many of Germany´s rich and famous subsequently came forward to declare their hidden wealth, boosting the tax coffers of Europe´s biggest economy by billions of euros. But Switzerland reacted angrily, saying the data was stolen in violation of its banking secrecy laws.

Global science spending increases by 19% in four years

NUT Desk- NEW YORK: Global R&D spending grew faster than the economy between 2014 and 2018 as countries around the world turned to research to bring on the green and digital transitions, says a new UNESCO report. Worldwide, science spending increased by 19% over the four years, while the number of scientists grew by 13.7% to 8.8 million.

Since the start of 2020, the COVID-19 crisis further boosted this trend. The 762-page report covers 193 countries. “What struck me with this one is the alignment of development priorities with different income levels, whether they are industrialised or low-income countries,” Susan Schneegans, editor-in-chief of the report, told Science|Business. Countries around the globe are prioritising digital and green R&I investments to boost competitiveness and future preparedness. However, the growth is for the most part, uneven. China and the US together account for 63% of the increase in spending, while the EU countries added a further 11%. Taken together, the G20 countries boast 88.8% of the world’s researchers, 93.2% of research spending and 90.6% of scientific publications. Private sector spending on science in most cases is relatively low, with the public sector accounting for the majority of investment.

Kylie Jenner planning to get married!

NUT Desk- Kylie Jenner has settled the dust regarding her future of getting married. The Kylie Cosmetics founder opened up on the Keeping Up With the Kardashians reunion episode saying while she does not see herself getting married in the near future, she hopes that one day she can. “[I am] not thinking about marriage but I’d like to get married one day,” she said. The revelation comes after she and Travis Scott reignited romance rumours after they were spotted getting close in New York.

A source told People that there seems to be “a different energy” between the two, one that is bringing them close to each other. “Although they always got along, there is a different energy between them now,” the insider says. “Kylie and Travis are very close again. Kylie flew to NYC to support him. It’s just great to see them back together.”

“They never put any pressure on their relationship,” the source adds. “The focus was always on being the best co-parents. They still keep separated homes in L.A. because this is what works for them.”

Kim Kardashian talks about future dating chances

NUT Desk- Kim Kardashian wore her heart on her sleeve and got candid about her broken marriage to Kanye West. In the Keeping Up With the Kardshians reunion episode the Skims founder looked back fondly at the golden days of her relationship with the Yeezy designer. “We saw glimpses into your relationship with Kanye over the seasons. At what point in your friendship did you say, ‘I’m in love with this guy’?” host Andy Cohen asked.
“I would say six months after my divorce with Kris Humphries, I called Kanye and I was like, ‘You’re not even going to call me to say I told you so?’ And then we met up six months later, and from that first night, I knew it was over,” revealed Kim.
The star went on to say how, out of her three marriages, her union with Kanye was the most “real” seeing that they grew to become a family of six as they share four children, North, Chicago, Psalm and Saint, together. “My marriage with Kanye and my kids was, is so real and lots of love and that to me was like my first real marriage,” she continued.
“If I asked you point blank, ‘Why did your marriage not work?’ what would you attribute it to?” the host pressed.

Major banks, airlines hit in new global online outage

NUT desk- SYDNEY: Major banks and airlines were among businesses hit by a fresh global online outage Thursday, with the problem traced to US-based tech provider Akamai. An hour-long blackout hit a number of US airlines and several Australian financial firms as well as other companies dotted around the world, with angry customers unable to access websites and mobile apps. “We are aware of the issue and actively working to restore services as soon as possible,

” an Akamai spokesperson told media. American, Delta, United and Southwest airlines were among those affected, while the issue appeared to be more prolonged in Australia — where problems struck mid-afternoon as much of the world slept. Australia´s largest financial firm Commonwealth Bank told media that it and many of the country´s major lenders had been hit. The outages, which began around 2:10pm Sydney time (0510 GMT), also hit Australia´s postal service and Virgin Australia. The airline said in a statement that it “was one of many organisations to experience an outage with the Akamai content delivery system”.

A spokesperson for ANZ bank told media the incident was “related to an external provider” but that “connectivity was restored quickly and the most impacted services are back online”. Banks in New Zealand and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange also reported problems with their web platforms. It is the latest incident to draw attention to the stability of economically vital online platforms and the key role that a handful of mostly unknown companies play in keeping the web running.

Last week US media and government websites, including the White House, New York Times, Reddit and Amazon were temporarily hit after a glitch with cloud computing services provider Fastly. Fastly offers a service to websites around the world to speed up loading times for websites. Akamai offers a range of similar IT products designed to boost online performance and security.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company refused to comment on what product the problem came from, but one of the affected firms reported it used Akamai for “IT network authentication”. Among the services Akamai provides are platforms that prevent DDoS attacks — an often crude cyberattack that knocks websites out by peppering them with requests for data. “Our priority is restoring service as quickly as possible. We will share additional information as it becomes available,” an Akamai spokesperson said. A series of high-profile hack-for-ransom attacks have also left corporations around the world jittery over cybersecurity risks, although there was no indication the latest problems were caused by malicious actors. Colonial Pipeline was briefly shuttered after an attack in May, and JBS, the world´s largest meat producer, was forced to stop operations in the United States and Australia. Both firms reportedly paid ransoms to get operations back up and running. The issue of cybersecurity was at the top of the agenda when US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met in Geneva on Wednesday.

Washington believes hackers who have extorted hundreds of millions of dollars from Western governments, companies, and organisations operate from Russian soil.

Virus cases surge in Africa as third wave gains pace WHO

NUT desk- BRAZZAVILLE: Coronavirus infections in Africa are surging as a third wave of the pandemic gathers pace on the continent, fuelled by the spread of more contagious variants, the World Health Organization said on Thursday. “Africa is in the midst of a full-blown third wave. The sobering trajectory of surging cases should rouse everyone into urgent action,” WHO”s regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, told an online news conference. According to WHO data, the number of new Covid-19 cases in Africa rose to over 116,500 in the week ending June 13, up from nearly 91,000 the previous week. In 22 African countries, cases rose by more than 20 percent in the week to June 13, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Uganda reporting their highest number of new weekly cases since the pandemic began. The WHO said that “a lack of adherence to transmission prevention measures has fuelled the new surge that coincides with colder seasonal weather in southern Africa and as more contagious variants spread. ” The continent has been hit less hard by the pandemic than most other regions, recording 135,885 deaths from 5,107,939 cases so far.

First astronauts arrive at China s space station

NUT desk- JIUQUAN, China: The first astronauts arrived at China”s new space station on Thursday in the country”s longest crewed mission to date, a landmark step in establishing Beijing as a major space power. The trio blasted off on a Long March-2F rocket from the Jiuquan launch center in northwest China”s Gobi desert, and their craft docked around seven hours later at the Tiangong station, where they will spend the next three months. State broadcaster CCTV showed a live feed from inside the spacecraft during the journey, with the three astronauts lifting their helmet visors after it reached orbit as one smiled and waved at the camera. Another floated a pen just off his lap in zero gravity, as he browsed the flight manual. The Shenzhou-12 spacecraft — having separated from the Long March rocket — “successfully docked with the forward port of the core module” of the Tiangong station, said the China Manned Space Agency, as state TV showed live footage.
