Newspaper sector woes deepened in pandemic year: Pew

WASHINGTON: The troubled US newspaper sector cut thousands more jobs as circulation losses extended in a pandemic year, but saw some positive signs with growth in digital readers, a Pew Research Center report showed Tuesday. As part of its annual assessment of the media, Pew researchers found losses of some 12 percent of newsroom jobs, or some 4,000 reporters, editors or photographers in 2020, to bring total employment to 30,820 at the end of the year. Weekday print circulation decreased 19 percent and Sunday print circulation fell 14 percent, Pew said. A bright spot may be that newspapers saw gains in digital subscribers and readers amid the decline in print. Pew found “digital circulation,” which reflects the number of registered website users, paid in most cases, rose as much as 38 percent when data is combined from industry sources and the largest US dailies. The researchers calculated that overall newspaper circulation — combining digital and print — fell six percent in the year. Even though the gloomy trend continued, “the decline was slower than we have seen in recent years,” said Pew researcher Mike Barthel. The data suggests newspapers are making some progress in capturing digital subscribers — with circulation revenue topping ad revenue for the sector for the first time, according to the report. Total estimated circulation revenue was $11.1 billion, compared with $11 billion in 2019. Advertising revenue in 2020 fell 29 percent to $8.8 billion, based on an analysis of financial statements for publicly traded newspaper companies. The survey did not specifically ask why people turned to newspaper websites, but Barthel noted that “our previous research showed that news consumption went up as a result of the coronavirus” pandemic. The number of unique website visitors to the top 50 daily newspapers — registered or not — rose 14 percent in the year to 13.9 million, according to the report, part of Pew´s annual “State of the Media” report. The report comes with legacy news organizations seeing continued pressure from a decline in print readers and difficulties in generating online revenue, and with increased consolidation, as hedge funds and chains buy up struggling dailies.

Pandemic pushes up sales of wearable gadgets

BarceloNa: Earphones embedded in pearl earrings, a smartwatch that measures body temperature, a diamond ring that monitors sleep patterns: The wearable gadgets market has boomed as the pandemic boosts interest in health monitoring and working from home. While worldwide sales of smartphones slumped last year, a record 527 million wearables were sold in 2020, up from 384 million in 2019, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. It was the first time that global wearable sales topped half a billion and analysts expect the trend to continue, with the firm forecasting the devices will overtake smartphone sales by the end of the decade. The surge in wearables sales was in focus at the four-day Mobile World Congress, the telecom industry´s biggest annual gathering, which wraps up Thursday in Barcelona. Ear-worn devices such as earbuds, which can be used to make calls and listen to music, accounted for nearly two-thirds of global wearable sales last year as people working from home upgraded their headphones for video calling.

Israel and UAE set to sign more deals, Lapid says

DUBAI: Israel´s top diplomat Yair Lapid said Wednesday that more cooperation deals with the UAE were on the horizon, during a landmark visit to the Gulf nation. The United Arab Emirates and Israel normalised ties in September, paving the way for a raft of deals ranging from tourism and aviation to financial services. “We´re going sign more agreements in July… in Israel. So it´s going to expand,” he told journalists. “The vision is (that) it moves from governments to business to people.” Lapid was speaking as he opened an Israeli consulate in the commercial hub of Dubai, a day after opening the country´s first Gulf embassy in UAE capital Abu Dhabi. “What we are opening here today isn´t only a consulate. It´s a centre of cooperation. A place that symbolises our ability to think together, to develop together, to change the world together,” he said. On Wednesday, he also visited the gigantic Expo 2020 Dubai, at which Israel will participate along with more than 190 countries. The six-month global expo, which Dubai hopes will attract visitors and boost the economy, is set to launch in October after a one-year delay due to the coronavirus pandemic.  “The Israeli pavilion will serve as a platform to establish bilateral cooperation in business, industry, investments, culture and academia,” said Israel´s point man for the expo, Elazar Cohen, in a statement.

Putin´s phone-in hit by ´cyberattacks´

MOSCOW: A televised phone-in with Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday was targeted by “powerful” cyberattacks, the state-run Rossiya 24 network which broadcast the event said. Shown on Kremlin-friendly media, the annual session with Putin sees the president field in real time queries submitted by Russians throughout the country. This year´s phone-in on Wednesday, which lasted nearly four hours, repeatedly faced connection problems, particularly during calls from remote regions. “Our digital systems are right now facing attacks, powerful DDoS attacks,” a Rossiya-24 presenter told Putin, after a caller from the Kuzbass region in southwestern Siberia experienced connection issues. “Are you joking? Seriously?” Putin responded. “Turns out we have hackers in Kuzbass,” he quipped.

Russia´s largest telecommunications provider, Rostelecom, confirmed the attacks to news agencies, saying that measures were being taken to “block these illegitimate activities”. Putin´s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the RIA Novosti news agency that the origin of the attacks was unclear.

Gutmann first woman ambassador to Germany

BERLIN: US President Joe Biden has nominated University of Pennsylvania president Amy Gutmann as ambassador to Germany, German government sources said Wednesday, after tumultuous years with Donald Trump´s envoy. Gutmann, 71, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, would be the first woman appointed to the post. The German officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed a report in Der Spiegel magazine. Gutmann´s appointment must be confirmed by the US Senate and approved by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The sources said no date had yet been set for her accreditation. The United States had previously been represented in Berlin by Trump ally Richard Grenell, who raised hackles in Germany with a combative approach, including vowing to empower anti-establishment right-wingers in Europe. Grenell returned to Washington to become Trump´s director of national intelligence before resigning as ambassador in June 2020. Chargee d´Affaires Robin Quinville had served as acting ambassador since then. Gutmann has led the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution, since 2016 and is an expert in democratic processes and ethics. She served as chair of Barack Obama´s Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. Gutmann told The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university newspaper, in 2013 that her Jewish father Kurt´s experiences in Nazi Germany had had a “profound influence” on her.

Diana legacy lingers as fans mark late royal’s 60th birthday

LONDON: Most people wouldn’t volunteer to walk through a minefield. Princess Diana did it twice.

On Jan. 15, 1997, Diana walked gingerly down a narrow path cleared through an Angolan minefield, wearing a protective visor and flak jacket emblazoned with the name of The HALO Trust, a group devoted to removing mines from former war zones. When she realized some of the photographers accompanying her didn’t get the shot, she turned around and did it again.

Later, she met with a group of landmine victims. A young girl who had lost her left leg perched on the princess’s lap.

Those touched by the life of the preschool teacher turned princess remembered her ahead of what would have been her 60th birthday on Thursday, recalling the complicated royal rebel who left an enduring imprint on the House of Windsor.

The images of that day appeared in newspapers and on TV sets around the globe, focusing international attention on the then-languishing campaign to rid the world of devices that lurk underground for decades after conflicts end. Today, a treaty banning landmines has 164 signatories.
