Scientists say new human species ‘Homo longi’ the closest ancestor

WASHINGTON: Scientists announced Friday that a skull discovered in northeast China represents a newly discovered human species they have named Homo longi, or “Dragon Man” — and they say the lineage should replace Neanderthals as our closest relatives. The Harbin cranium was discovered in the 1930s in the city of the same name in Heilongjiang province, but was reportedly hidden in a well for 85 years to protect it from the Japanese army. It was later dug up and handed to Ji Qiang, a professor at Hebei GEO University, in 2018. “On our analyses, the Harbin group is more closely linked to H. sapiens than the Neanderthals are — that is, Harbin shared a more recent common ancestor with us than the Neanderthals did,” co-author Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum, London told media. “If these are regarded as distinct species, then this is our sister (most closely related) species.” The findings were published in three papers in the journal The Innovation. The skull dates back at least 146,000 years, placing it in the Middle Pleistocene. It could hold a brain comparable in size to that of modern humans but with larger eye sockets, thick brow ridges, a wide mouth and oversized teeth. “While it shows typical archaic human features, the Harbin cranium presents a mosaic combination of primitive and derived characters setting itself apart from all the other previously named Homo species,” said Ji, a co-author of the study. The name is derived from Long Jiang, which literally means “Dragon River.” The team believe the cranium belonged to a male, around 50 years old, living in a forested floodplain. “This population would have been hunter-gatherers, living off the land,” said Stringer. “From the winter temperatures in Harbin today, it looks like they were coping with even harsher cold than the Neanderthals.” Given the location where the skull was found as well as the large-sized man it implies, the team believe H. longi may have been well adapted for harsh environments and would have been able to disperse throughout Asia.

FAMILY TREE:

Researchers first studied the external morphology of the cranium using over 600 traits, and then ran millions of simulations using a computer model to build trees of relatedness to other fossils. “These suggest that Harbin and some other fossils from China form a third lineage of later humans alongside the Neanderthals and H. sapiens,” explained Stringer.  If Homo sapiens had reached East Asia at the time Homo longi was present, they might have interbred, though this is not clear. There are also many answered questions about their culture and technology level, because of a lack of archaeological material. But the finding could still reshape our understanding of human evolution. “It establishes a third human lineage in East Asia with its own evolutionary history and shows how important the region was for human evolution,” said Stringer.

Pakistan Navy observes World Hydrography Day

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Navy observed World Hydrography Day with enthusiasm and aim to create awareness about the importance of Hydrography and its role towards rendering our waters safer to support maritime trade and accident free marine environment. Every year on 21 June, World Hydrography Day is celebrated across the world, to acknowledge the work done in the important field of hydrography to support safe navigation at open seas, ports and other protected marine areas around the globe, said a Pakistan Navy news release here received. The theme selected for this year is “One hundred years of International cooperation in Hydrography” which is designed to showcase progress in knowledge and technology over the past 100 years while celebrating the ground breaking work done during this period. Pakistan is a responsible coastal state blessed with over 1,000 kms of coastline and around 290,000 sq kms sea area. As per Conventions on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), Pakistan like other coastal states is also responsible for hydrographic surveys and production of nautical charts/ maps of its waters to provide accurate nautical information for safe navigation and maritime trade. In this regard Pakistan Navy Hydrographic Department (PNHD) is aptly fulfilling this international obligation to ensure availability of updated information for Mariners who traversed through the busy shipping lane in North Arabian Sea. To be at par with modern trends in Hydrographic Surveys, PNHD is utilizing latest technology to improvise coverage and resolution of surveys. Pakistan Navy, being the sole proprietor of National Hydrographic domain of the country, observes the day with zeal and enthusiasm.

Global wars displacements double in a decade: UN

GENEVA: Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the number of people fleeing war and persecution continued rising last year, with global displacement climbing to over 82 million — double the figure a decade ago, the UN said Friday.

A fresh report from the UN refugee agency showed global displacement figures swelled by around three million in 2020 after an already record-breaking year in 2019, leaving a full one percent of humanity uprooted and displaced.

The report highlighted how drawn-out crises like those in Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen were continuing to force people to flee, while eruptions of violence in places like Ethiopia and Mozambique were causing surging displacement.

The fact that the numbers rose for the ninth straight year was all the more devastating because Covid-19 restrictions had been expected to limit displacement. During the pandemic, “everything else has stopped, including the economies, but wars and conflict and violence and discrimination and persecution, all the factors that pushed these people to flee, have continued,” UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi told media.

The UN agency found that by the end of 2020, a record 82.4 million people were living as refugees or asylum seekers, or in so-called internal displacement within their own countries, up from some 40 million in 2011. – ”Epic failure” – “Today”s global displacement figures are an epic failure of humanity,” head of the Norwegian Refugee Council Jan Egeland said, pointing out that “far more people are on the move today than anytime during World War II. ”

“Yet despite the staggering statistics, world leaders have been inept to resolve the greatest emergency of our generation. ” The UNHCR report highlighted that a full 42 percent of the world”s displaced are girls and boys under the age of 18. “The tragedy of so many children being born into exile should be reason enough to make far greater efforts to prevent and end conflict and violence,” Grandi said.

Some 26.4 million people were living as refugees at the end of 2020, including 5.7 million Palestinians. Some 3.9 million Venezuelans were also displaced beyond their borders without being considered refugees, while 4.1 million people were registered worldwide as asylum seekers. – Soaring internal displacement – But while both refugee and asylum seeker numbers remained relatively flat from 2019, the number of people displaced within their own countries surged by more than two million to 48 million, the report said. This was perhaps not surprising, given that the factors that generally force people to flee did not disappear during the pandemic, but the possibility to cross borders largely did.

In 2020, at least 164 countries closed their borders because of Covid-19, and more than half of them made no exceptions for asylum seekers and refugees fleeing for their lives. “In a situation of increased conflict and violence, in a situation in which borders have been difficult to cross because of Covid, inevitably the figure. . . that has gone up is that of internally displaced people,” Grandi told reporters.
