Agriculture Republic set up Pakistan’s first ‘Digital Dera’ at remote village of Pakpattan.

Pakpattan (Muhammad Yasir)

Agriculture Republic, a think-tank in collaboration with the Internet Society Global has setup Pakistan’s first ‘Digital Dera’ at remote village of Pakpattan district to train 15,000 farmers of the area in digital farming practices by providing them access to latest technology and resources in the farming sector.

In the first phase, two desk-top computers and three tablets have been made available at the Dera, which have been equipped with a fast broad-band connection in an air-conditioned atmosphere powered by a solar system. The Digital Dera has been established at Chak- 26/SP.

Director General Agriculture (Extension) Punjab Dr. Anjum Ali Buttar who was the chief guest at the inaugural of this facility said that the government was taking all out steps for introduction of climate smart agricultural practices in the province. He said that changing weather patterns demand introduction of new crop varieties resistant to climate change.

He said after distribution of smart phones among the growers to provide them access to information available through internet, now the government is going to setup a ‘call center’ where all the information regarding agriculture will be available to growers.

“The Digital Dera is an attempt to empower local farmers through the internet connectivity and access to digital knowledge economy,” said Agriculture Republic co-founder Aamer Hayat Bhandara. “It will also serve as a digital hub to organize awareness and capacity building sessions to educate the youth and small farmers about transparency and accountability in agriculture, food security and climate change policies.”

Bhandara said that the users of the Digital Dera will have access to digital farming and learning resources and what the internet has to offer to the agricultural community powered by Internet of Things (IoT) but not to the social media tools that consume, rather waste, time of the people without offering anything positive.

He said that the facility will not be confined to the residents of Chak 26-SP rather all the farmers from Pakpattan’s rural belt will have access to it to find solutions to their farming challenges, learning about the latest agriculture technology and extension services offered by various members and actors of the Agriculture Republic community.

Foud Bajwa, co-founder Agriculture Republic proudly said that Digital Dera can match any computer lab in the country with regard to connectivity speed and equipment.

Adnan, a young farmer of the village while talking to a group of journalists said that providing a speedy internet in a village devoid of even 2-G phone signals is a great achievement for them. He was hopeful that the facility will not only help them learn new farming techniques but also connect with agriculture experts to get advice on various issues faced from plantation to harvesting of various crops.

Sarfaraz Hussain, another local farmer, looking forward to having information about latest agricultural research, new farming techniques for achieving maximum production with the minimum or judicious use of farm inputs.

Netflix releases games after gaming company acquisition.

Lahore(NUT-DESK)

Netflix has bought video game creator Night School Studio and rolled out five mobile gaming titles in select European markets, as it looks to diversify revenue sources amid intensifying competition in the streaming space.

Night School Studio, the company’s first gaming studio purchase, is best known for its debut game, “Oxenfree”, a supernatural teen thriller with an eerie soundtrack.

The studio’s games, which are available on Sony’s PlayStation, Microsoft’s Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PCs, will be the first non-mobile titles in the streaming giant’s newly created video game portfolio.

“Like our shows and films, these games will all be included as part of your Netflix membership — all with no ads and no in-app purchases,” the company said.

Netflix had mentioned its plans to enter gaming during its last quarterly earnings, as newer players including Disney+ and HBO Max have been rapidly gaining subscribers, intensifying competition in the streaming landscape.

The company earlier in the day said it had introduced “Stranger Things: 1984”, “Stranger Things 3: The Game”, “Card Blast”, “Teeter Up” and “Shooting Hoops” titles on Android to Netflix members in Spain and Italy.

WhatsApp will stop working on older Android phones after October 2020

Lahore (NUT-DESK)

WhatsApp has been in the news this year for releasing a plethora of features for its more than 2 billion users across the world. The year saw some of the most anticipated features from the Facebook-owned messaging app such as Dark Mode feature, Disappearing Messages option, WhatsApp Business app enhancements and more.

However, WhatsApp has always maintained that “For the best experience, we recommend you use the latest software version of Android or iOS and all other compatible software.”

Thus, come 2021, WhatsApp will stop working on a number of smartphones. As updated on the FAQ support page of the Facebook-owned messaging app, there are several Android and iOS phones that may not be able to run the app as the company will withdraw support for older versions of OS from next year.

WhatsApp is used to removing the support for specific Android versions. This is a common technique because developers always prefer to support the newest OS updates, and it’s hard to always support old versions. It’s the case of Android OS 4.0.4 and older versions: WhatsApp has announced that they will no longer support Android phones running those versions after a new WhatsApp beta for Android update.

What can you do to continue using WhatsApp on those versions? Unfortunately, you won’t be able to update WhatsApp after November 1, 2021, and your current WhatsApp update is going to expire after a certain date.

You need to switch to a new Android device on a supported Android version if your device is old, so be sure to back up your chat history. Note that WhatsApp is also going to support chat history migration from Android to iOS in a future update if you’re interested to switch to iPhone.

IT expert arrested for hacking Nadia Khan’s YouTube account

Lahore (NUT-DESK)

A man has been arrested on charges of fraud with TV host and actor Nadia Khan.  “In September 2020, I approached an IT expert, Hammad Sami, due to some problems with my YouTube account. He used my laptop for 10 minutes,” Nadia said while talking to SAMAA TV. “He tricked me in his conversations and added his bank details into my accounts.”

From September 2020 to January 2021, she said, the revenue of her YouTube account OutStyleDotCom was missing.

The host approached YouTube about the payments. “The video sharing platform confirmed the payment transfers into an account titled Hammad Sami,” she said.

Nadia filed a complaint with the cybercrime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency. The investigation revealed the transactions went into Hammad Sami’s account.

“The IT expert confessed the crime and has been arrested,” she said.

However, Nadia Khan expressed “disappointment” over the slow work by the agency.

“I have given all the evidence against Hammad but the case still dragged on for a year. Cybercrime should be more efficient,” she said.

Nadia Khan has been making videos on beauty products and makeup tutorials. She started filming vlogs and BTS from her serials. She currently has around 840,000 subscribers.

Facebook to launch portable version of Portal video chat device

Lahore (NUT-DESK)

Facebook has announced two new models of its Portal video calling devices, including its first portable version. The social media company also said it was testing with several U.S. companies a service for businesses to remotely manage Portal work accounts and devices.

Facebook has not provided specific sales numbers on Portal, but a spokeswoman said there had been increased sales and usage during the COVID-19 pandemic, through which many companies shifted to remote working and more people stayed at home under lockdown measures. Facebook makes the vast majority of its money from digital ads.

The company, which is under scrutiny from global regulators and lawmakers over its approach to user safety, privacy and content across its services, launched its first line of Portals in 2018. The smart-display devices, one of Facebook’s forays into selling hardware, let users make video calls, with cameras that automatically follow users around a room.

Updates in the new models announced on Tuesday included a “household mode,” allowing users to share a Portal and control others’ access to their contacts and apps, and a way to watch TV through the product with others who are not using a Portal device.

Facebook said the portable Portal Go will cost $199 and the large-screen Portal+, the latest generation of the product, will cost $349. Both will begin shipping on Oct. 19.

Facebook also said it would start adding support for Microsoft Teams in Portal in December.

The company reported $497 million in non-advertising revenue in the second quarter of 2021, which it attributed mainly to sales of its Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headsets. Facebook last month launched a test of a VR remote work app where Quest 2 users can hold meetings as avatar versions of themselves.

Facebook seeks to defend itself after scathing reports

Lahore (NUT-DESK)

Facebook fired back after a series of withering Wall Street Journal reports that the company failed to keep users safe, with the social media giant noting an increase in staff and spending on battling abuses. The company has been under relentless pressure to guard against being a platform where misinformation and hate can spread, while at the same time remain a forum for people to speak freely. It has struggled to respond.

A series of recent Wall Street Journal reports said the company knew its Instagram photo-sharing tool was hurting teenage girls’ mental health, and that its moderation system had a double standard allowing VIPs to skirt rules. One of the articles, citing Facebook’s own research, said a 2018 change to its software ended up promoting political outrage and division.

But Facebook said Tuesday it has spent more than $13 billion in the past five years on teams and technology devoted to fighting abuses. Some 40,000 people now work on safety and security for the California-based tech giant, quadruple the number in the year 2016, according to Facebook.

“How technology companies grapple with complex issues is being heavily scrutinized, and often, without important context,” Facebook contended in a blog post.

The social network launched an about.facebook.com/progress website to showcase work done to counter abuses. Facebook’s Nick Clegg also attacked the reporting in a blog post on Saturday, saying the articles were unfair.

“At the heart of this series is an allegation that is just plain false: that Facebook conducts research and then systematically and willfully ignores it if the findings are inconvenient for the company,” he wrote. The Journal stories cited, in part, studies commissioned by the company and which contained disturbing revelations like: “We make body image issues worse for one in three teen girls.”

Clegg said the stories selectively employed quotes in a way that offered a deliberately lop-sided view of the company’s work.

“We will continue to ask ourselves the hard questions. And we will continue to improve our products and services as a result,” he said in the closing lines of his post.

Facebook recently launched an effort targeting users working together on the platform to promote real-world violence or conspiracy theories, beginning by taking down a German network spreading Covid misinformation. The new tool is meant to detect organized, malicious efforts that are a threat but fall short of the social media giant’s existing rules against hate groups, said Facebook’s head of security policy Nathaniel Gleicher.

TikTok Limits use of APP for under 14 teens

Lahore (NUT-DESK)

Chinese short video app Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, said on Saturday that all of its authenticated users below the age of 14 will now access the app in a “youth mode”, in its push to shield the young from inappropriate content.

In the youth mode, under-14 users can only access the app for up to 40 minutes a day, and only between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., Douyin, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, said in a statement.

The measure to protect the young was the most stringent in the history of the platform, Douyin said.

Chinese regulators have tightened their grip over the internet this year, policing it for violations of core socialist values. Authorities have particularly called for minors to be better protected from online dangers including “blind” and “chaotic” worship of internet celebrities.

Popular social messaging app WeChat, owned by Tencent, also has a “youth mode”, which when turned on, limits young users’ access to some games and functionalities such as payments or the ability to find nearby friends.
