Instagram boosts child protection tools, including age prediction

WASHINGTON (NUT Desk) – Facebook-owned Instagram unveiled technology Tuesday aimed at preventing underage children from creating accounts and blocking adults from contacting young users they don´t know.

It was the latest move responding to concerns about inappropriate contact between adults and children on the platform, which like most services sets an age minimum of 13.

Instagram will begin using artificial intelligence to determine a user´s age at signup in an effort to find underage users.

“While many people are honest about their age, we know that young people can lie about their date of birth. We want to do more to stop this from happening, but verifying people´s age online is complex and something many in our industry are grappling with,” a blog post said.

“To address this challenge, we´re developing new artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to help us keep teens safer and apply new age-appropriate features.” Additionally, the California giant said it would introduce a new feature that prevents adults from sending messages to people under 18 who don´t follow them, to prevent unwanted contact.

“This feature relies on our work to predict peoples´ ages using machine learning technology, and the age people give us when they sign up,” Instagram said.

Instagram is also looking at ways to make it more difficult for adults who have been exhibiting “potentially suspicious behavior” to interact with teens, including restricting these adults from seeing suggested teen accounts.

The image-focused network indicated it will alert teens to potentially suspect behavior by adults, including the sending of large numbers of private messages.

“We´ll use this tool to alert the recipients… and give them an option to end the conversation, or block, report, or restrict the adult,” Instagram said.

Experimental space-bred rice seeds sprout in China

NUT (DESK) –  About 1,500 rice seeds have sprouted and grown leaves in a greenhouse in south China after returning from a journey to the moon last year. The seeds were planted in the greenhouse of the National Engineering Research Center of Plant Space Breeding of South China Agricultural University (SCAU). They are expected to be transplanted to fields at the end of this month. These rice seeds traveled more than 760,000 kilometers to the moon last November and returned to Earth on Dec. 17 after 23 days of flight aboard China’s Chang’e 5 lunar probe. The seeds were second-generation space-bred ones because their “parents” were also space-bred seeds. But the experiment on the Chang’e 5 probe is different from previous ones. It was the first such experiment conducted in a deep space environment. The space flight time was longer, and the probe encountered radiation in the Van Allen Belts and from sunspot activity, according to the center’s director Chen Zhiqiang. Stronger hereditary effects are expected to be produced in this experiment, as a deep space environment is more similar to a real space extreme environment, according to the center’s deputy director Guo Tao. It will help researchers learn how hereditary effects induced in deep space and a low-Earth orbit environment differ and provide important experimental samples and data for further research on mutation rules in space breeding, Guo said. The space-bred rice is expected to be harvested at the end of June.

US judge removes China´s smartphone Xiaomi maker from Trump-era blacklist

WASHINGTON: A US judge on Friday ordered Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi temporarily removed from a government blacklist barring American investment in the company.

Six days before Donald Trump left office last year, his administration cemented its trade war legacy against Beijing with a series of announcements targeting Chinese firms including Xiaomi, state oil giant CNOOC, and social media darling TikTok.

Xiaomi was one of nine firms classified by the Pentagon as “Communist Chinese military companies.

“But US District Judge Rudolph Contreras in Washington ruled Friday the Departments of Defense and Treasury “have not made the case that the national security interests at stake here are compelling.

“He issued a preliminary injunction removing Xiaomi from the blacklist and suspending the ban on US investors buying the company´s securities.

In an appeal filed in January against its blacklisting, Xiaomi — which overtook Apple last year to become the world´s third-largest smartphone manufacturer — said Washington´s moves were “incorrect” and had “deprived the company of legal due process.

“Contreras´s decision came the same day US regulators listed Huawei and ZTE among Chinese telecom gear firms deemed a threat to national security, signalling that a hoped-for softening of relations is not on the cards.

US regulators term Huawei a threat to national security

SAN FRANCISCO: US regulators listed Huawei among Chinese telecom gear firms deemed a threat to national security, signalling that a hoped for softening of relations is not in the cards.

A roster of communications companies thought to pose “an unacceptable risk” to national security included Huawei Technologies; ZTE; Hytera Communications; Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, and Dahua Technology. “This list is a big step toward restoring trust in our communications networks,” said Federal Communications Commission acting chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.

“This list provides meaningful guidance that will ensure that as next-generation networks are built across the country, they do not repeat the mistakes of the past or use equipment or services that will pose a threat to US national security or the security and safety of Americans.

“The five Chinese companies that provide communications equipment or services were on a roster compiled by the FCC and the Homeland Security Bureau as per US law.

Huawei chief and founder Ren Zhengfei last month called for a reset with the United States under President Joe Biden, after the firm was battered by sanctions imposed by Donald Trump´s administration.

In his first appearance before journalists in a year, Ren Zhengfei said his “confidence in Huawei´s ability to survive has grown” despite its travails across much of the western world where it is maligned as a potential security threat.

Scientists develop speaking fabric

TOKYO: At first glance, the fabric looks like a pretty if not especially original scarf, with turquoise, blue and orange stripes in an open weave. But this fabric can communicate. It´s wearable, foldable and washable, but it´s also a fully functioning display — capable of flashing messages or images, or even being used with a keyboard.

The fabric, described in a study in the journal Nature on Wednesday, is the work of a team led by Huisheng Peng, a professor in the department of macromolecular engineering at Shanghai´s Fudan University. He believes it could revolutionise communication and “help individuals with voice, speech or language difficulties to express themselves to others”. “We hope that woven-fibre materials will shape next-generation electronics by changing the way we interact with electronic devices,” he said. Wearable electronics have advanced significantly in recent years, and clothing incorporating electronic functions including super-thin displays is already available.

Another study published this week, for example, describes a wearable microgrid powered by the sweat of the wearer. But there are limitations to most existing products. They are often made by attaching or weaving thin film light-emitting devices to fabrics, resulting in a material that is not breathable or very flexible. They are also often fragile and prone to damage, and in the past were only able to display pre-determined patterns.

European first: France set for satellite war game

Toulouse, France: France on Friday prepared to simulate an attack by a hostile power on one of its satellites in a war game scenario the government said is less outlandishly futuristic than it may seem. President Emmanuel Macron was to watch onsite as his military chiefs started to play out a four-day sequence in which an unnamed space-capable power attacks a nation allied to France, and tries to take out a French communications satellite. Germany, Italy and the US are participating in the AsterX space war game at France´s national space agency CNES in Toulouse, the first such exercise in France or in Europe.

It is an opportunity to simulate modifying the flight path of satellites, sending backup satellites to fix a breakdown, monitoring the transmission of sensitive data and scrambling transmissions by hostile satellites temporarily or even shutting them down completely. The scenario of the exercise may be fictional, Macron´s office said, but is far from implausible. The French government accuses Russia of having brought its intelligence-gathering satellite Olymp-K, also known as Louch, into close proximity of the French-Italian military satellite Athena-Fidus in 2017 in what Defence Minister Florence Parly called “an act of espionage”.

Last year, the US claimed that Russia had conducted a non-destructive anti-satellite weapons test from space. Before the exercise kicked off, Macron headed a meeting of the space command, a body created in 2017 to run France´s military strategy in space.
