Punjab sets up ‘Women Empowerment Cells` under ACE

LAHORE: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) has set up a `Women Empowerment Cell` at its headquarters here and its regional directorates to facilitate women complainants.

ACE Director General Gohar Nafees said the cell would deal with women`s issues related to inherited property, gender discrimination in job opportunities and posting, transfers, besides illegal occupation of their properties.

He said a social awareness campaign titled `Women Empowerment with ACE` was also being designed for maximum outreach.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Establishment on Saturday arrested one Hafiz Zahoor Ahmed alias Arshad Ali for fraudulently preparing purchase documents of one-kanal plot of a retired teacher, Azhara Zafar, depriving her of the property in Multan.

The teacher had requested the premier and Anti-Corruption Establishment Punjab head on social media for helping her take back the plot from the land grabber(s).

The DG took notice and directed the Anti-Corruption Establishment Multan region Director Haider Watoo to look into the matter. Subsequently, the suspect was arrested who had got the plot sold to a third party on the basis of fake documents.

Pakistan: Rise in COVID-19 cases, positivity ratio 4.09%

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported the highest coronavirus positivity ratio at 4.09% in the last 24 hours since May 30, which was at 4.05%, as per data from the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

As many as 1,980 coronavirus cases have been detected from 48,382 tests conducted across the country in the last 24 hours, the NCOC said as it shared the daily statistics.

Twenty-seven deaths occurred in the last 24 hours, with the most recorded in Sindh followed by Khyber Pakhtunkwa, according to the NCOC’s data. Out of the 27 people who lost their lives, 16 died on ventilators.

6-year-old dies in Lahore after stray dog bite

LAHORE: In yet another dog bite incident, a six-year-old boy died after being bitten by a stray dog. The victim’s father told police that the child was playing in the city’s Yasmeen Park when the stray dog bit him on the neck. The child succumbed to the wound while he was being taken to the hospital, said the father. The commissioner Lahore has taken notice of the incident and sought a report on the matter from CEO health and chief corporation Lahore.

PDMA issues rain alert for provinces

PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Saturday has issued rain alert to all the district administrations in the provinces to be prepared for any emergency as heavy rains are likely to hit different parts of the country from Sunday. Through a communique, the PDMA said as per the Meteorological Department forecast, rain and wind-thunderstorm with few heavy rain are expected in KP from Sunday to Wednesday. Heavy rains may cause flash flooding in local nullahs and streams of the provinces and urban flooding and landslide in the vulnerable areas of the provinces. The PDMA urged the people to take all precautionary measures and directed all line departments to ensure availability of all emergency service staff, machinery and other resources.

CTD Punjab conducts 23 IBOs in 7 days

LAHORE: The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab conducted 23 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across Punjab during the last seven days in view of the recent terrorism incidents, according to official sources. A spokesperson for the CTD said 23 suspects were interrogated during these operations, and two alleged terrorists — Abdul Samad son of Aslam Khan and Ikram-Ullah Khan were arrested. Abdul Samad was arrested from Sialkot, and he belonged to defunct organisation Daesh. Explosive material was recovered from his custody. The ISIS stickers, 980gm explosive material, safety fuse 68 inch, one non-electric detonator and one mobile phone were recovered from him. Ikram-Ullah Khan, son of Shahbaz Khan, was arrested from Nankana Sahib. He belonged to defunct organisation Jash-e-Mohammad (JeM). He was collecting funds for his organisation. Four receipt books, 25 stickers of JeM, eight monthly booklet namely “Muslim Children”, nine monthly “Al-Merabtoon”, one CNIC and Rs 76,100 in cash were recovered from him.

Sustainable growth major challenge: Razak Dawood

FAISALABAD: Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce, Textile, Industries, Production and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood has said that sustainability of economic growth is a major challenge after stabilising and improving the economic indicators. He was addressing the business community at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) here on Saturday. He said that in this regard a series of meetings had been proposed with the stakeholders immediately after Eid. One meeting would be held with Prime Minister Imran Khan so that the exporters could interact directly with him and highlight their core issues. The advisor pointed out that our economy was moving in the right direction and industry was making phenomenal growth. The PTI government, during the last three years, had attained the growth targets and now challenge was to ensure sustainability of economic growth, he added. Dispelling an impression that exporters were continuously demanding more, he said that market condition was changing and accordingly new challenges were cropping up and we have to handle those with wisdom and prudence in the fast changing business environment. He said that Pak exports jumped to $31 billion last year and in this connection, the lion’s share was contributed by the textile sector. He pointed out the tariff rationalisation measures and said that duty had been reduced to zero level on various textile raw materials including raw cotton, nylon, acrylic, viscos, wool, flock and hemp. He said that the measure had enabled exporters to explore new markets while his concern was that tariff rationalization must stand continue in the coming years. He said that 40 per cent of our raw material was being imported and duty on it had already been reduced to zero. In this connection, he specifically mentioned engineering, pharmaceutical and footwear sectors for which all duties had been withdrawn. He said that he had talked to Prime Minister Imran Khan and they had detailed meetings with Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin on that issue. About inflation, he said that no doubt it was a major issue for an elected government. He said that the PM would have two meetings. In the first meeting, they would decide export targets for the next financial year. He said that two years ago, the textile exports were $13 billion, while last year the sector earned $15.5 billion.

ISLAMABAD: The price of 24 karat per tola gold increased by Rs 200 and was sold at Rs 109,300 on Saturday against its sale at Rs109,100, Karachi Sarafa and Jewellers Group reported. The price of 10 gram 24 karat gold also increased by Rs 172 and was sold at Rs 93,707 against its sale at Rs 93,535 while the prices of 10 gram 22 Karat gold went up to Rs 85,898 from 85,741. The price of per tola and ten gram silver remained stable at Rs 1440 and Rs 1234.56 respectively. The price of gold in international market increased by $8 and was traded at $1808 against its sale at $1800.

Indian troops martyr two more youth in IIOJK

ISLAMABAD: Indian troops in their fresh act of state terrorism martyred two Kashmiri youth in Islamabad district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Saturday, raising the number of slain youth in the territory to eight since Thursday. The troops martyred the youth during a cordon off and search operation at Kawarigam in Achabal area of the district. The operation continued till last reports came in, KMS reported. Earlier, Indian troops in similar operations martyred two youth each in Pulwama and Kulgam districts and one in Rajouri district on Thursday. One more youth was martyred by the troops in Rajouri, yesterday.

Govt to implement SOPs week before Eid

LAHORE: The Punjab government will observe a week for the implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and vaccination till July 18 in wake of Eid-ul-Azha by following guidelines of the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) to contain spread of coronavirus. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Provincial Health Minister Dr Yasmeen Rashid and the chief secretary at the Civil Secretariat here on Saturday. The Home Department has set up a provincial control room for monitoring and directions had been issued to administrative and police officers to form teams to check SOPs violations at markets, parks, restaurants, wedding halls, and other public places. Addressing the meeting, the health minister said that vaccination as well as precautionary measures were essential to ward off the coronavirus disease. She added that people should make it a habit to wear a mask and keep social distance. She maintained that the purpose of observing the week was to contain the spread of the virus on Eid. In the meeting, the chief secretary expressing displeasure over low vaccination in some districts, including Kasur, ordered transfer of CEO Health Kasur over poor performance. He said that the corona vaccination campaign was a national cause and negligence in this regard would not be tolerated at all. The senior member board of revenue, additional chief secretary, additional chief secretary (home), secretaries of the health department, commissioner and others attended the meeting. The commissioners, RPOs, and deputy commissioners participated through the video link.
