OIC-CERT hosts Cybersecurity Roundtable at MWC 2024

13 members and organizations to discuss key topics related to today’s cybersecurity landscape and share updates on 5G and Cloud Security.
Barcelona, Spain (Staff Reporter) OIC-CERT (Organization of The Islamic Cooperation – Computer Emergency Response Teams) organized a high-level industry roundtable to jointly discuss the evolving global cybersecurity landscape and challenges at the Mobile World Congress. Under the theme ‘Instilling Digital Trust & Resilience’, the event gathered 13 members and organizations from Oman, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Brunei, Egypt, Bangladesh, Jordan, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, the OIC Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) based in Pakistan, and Huawei.
During the roundtable, OIC-CERT participating members finalized action plans and initiatives like the OIC-CERT 5G Working Group & Cloud Security Working Group, 5G security, and Cloud Security Framework. The creation of a new potential working group for AI security and supply chain security was also discussed.
Eng. Badar Ali Said Al Salehi, Chair of the OIC-CERT, and Director General, Oman National CERT (OCERT), delivered the opening address, stating, “As a leading cybersecurity platform, OIC-CERT is committed to making cyberspace safe, and we hosted this exclusive roundtable to gather some of the world’s leading cybersecurity experts to help build digital trust and boost cyber resilience. We strongly believe that through a global collaboration, we will be successful in mitigating cyber threats.”
The OIC-CERT event featured several high-level speakers that shed light on crucial topics. Professor Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General, COMSTECH, delivered a keynote address, while Sean Yang, Huawei Global Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection Officer, hosted a session on the need to boost digital trust and resilience. Huawei is a commercial member of OIC-CERT, and Dr. Aloysius Cheang, Huawei’s Chief Security Officer for Middle East and Central Asia together with Cybersecurity Malaysia, the OIC-CERT Permanent Secretariat were the co-chair leading the 5G Security Working Group.
Salma Hafez, Head of National Efforts Coordination Department, EG-CERT from Egypt moderated a session on the roles of multiple stakeholders, like regulatory authorities, industry organizations, enterprises, etc., in enhancing digital trust and resilience. She highlighted that by aligning interests and leveraging collective expertise, organizations can effectively harness the power of their stakeholders to propel digital transformation and fortify resilience in an increasingly volatile and interconnected world.
Abdalla Mohamed Alzarooni, Senior information Security Analyst, aeCERT from UAE, led a session on the actions and measures for instilling digital trust and resilience. He explained that organizations risk falling behind competitors and failing to capitalize on emerging opportunities without deliberate actions. He also elaborated that organizations can proactively enhance digital thrust and resilience by taking strategic actions and implementing rigorous measurement practices, ensuring long-term success in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
Iman Ahmed, Director of Cybersecurity Development, OCERT from Oman, and Dr. Hulk Zhang, Senior Cybersecurity Specialist, Huawei UAE, shared a case study on Cybersecurity Industry Development Strategy Maturity Model (CIDSMM), a collaboration project between ITU-ARCC and Huawei. In addition, Prof S Khurshid Hasanain, Adviser, COMSTECH, shared the way forward for enhancing the collaboration between OIC-CERT and COMSTECH.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IT Board and World Bank hosted a Roundtable discussion in Karachi to Promote BPO Spaces in Peshawar and Abbottabad.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IT Board in collaboration with World Bank and Tech Valley Pakistan, recently concluded a highly successful consultative session in Karachi, the economic hub of Pakistan. The event brought together industry leaders, and key stakeholders to discuss and strategize the growth and potential of “Workaround” which is Pakistan’s first publicly funded Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Ready Facility in Abbottabad and Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The consultative session was marked by insightful discussions, valuable insights, and a shared vision for the future of BPO and IT companies in the region. Attendees included representatives from both local and international BPO and IT firms, who were keen on exploring the opportunities presented by “Workaround.”

As a government project, Workaround operates on a non-profit, non-loss model. Companies hosted here are charged based on actual expenses incurred for rent, utilities, and operational activities. This ensures a cost-effective solution for business needs of every kind of IT & BPO companies. It provides flexibility for OTservices, call center and back-office support operations, and many companies are already renting spaces in Peshawar.

KP IT Board MD Dr Ali Mahmud said: “Workaround will offer IT companies a number of advantages, including subsidized costs and access to a young and talented workforce. We believe that this will make Peshawar and Abbottabad attractive destinations for IT companies from around the globe .”

“The World Bank has been supporting digital inclusion for youth employment in the region for nearly a decade,” said World Bank Senior Social Sector Specialist Shan Rahman. “The Workaround spaces in Peshawar and Abbottabad will provide IT companies with the resources they need to succeed and grow. We believe that this initiative will help to create jobs and boost economic growth in the region.”

Prime Minister of Pakistan meets Huawei to discuss ICT ecosystem

Prime Minister of Pakistan meets Huawei to discuss ICT ecosystem, digital economy and upskilling the ICT local talent pool”.

Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir)  Mr. Ethan Sun, CEO Huawei Pakistan, called on His Excellency, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, to share ongoing and potential collaborations to develop the ICT ecosystem and digital economy in Pakistan.

The honorable Prime Minister expressed his appreciation of Huawei’s role in enabling the Digital transformation in Pakistan stating that “technological advancement and enhancement of ICT opportunities for the youth and women had the potential to usher in a brighter future of Pakistan.”

Mr. Ethan Sun said, “Innovation is central to Huawei’s vision and operations. To this end, last year we have set up the Global Service Centre (GSC)  in Pakistan with more than 2000 employees. Pakistan celebrates success in Huawei ICT Competition 2023

Pakistani youth excel in global network and innovation competition in China.

Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir)  Huawei in collaboration with the Government of Pakistan held closing ceremony of Huawei ICT Competition 2022-23 at the Aiwan-e-Sadar, celebrating the success of the Pakistani teams that brought home accolades and prizes in the regional competitions.

The students from Pakistan had won second and third prize in the Network Track and third prize in the Innovation Track at the Huawei ICT Competition 2022-2023 Global Final concluded at Huawei Headquarters in Shenzhen, China. The first to be held in person since 2019, the event’s culmination was a competition between finalists in 146 teams from 36 countries. Before the final, more than 120,000 students from more than 2000 universities in 74 countries and regions around the world took part in the ICT Competition, said a news release received here on Wednesday

The Honourable President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, graced the Ceremony as Chief Guest to celebrate the success of some of Pakistan’s brightest young minds. Students from Pakistan won the second and third prize in the Network Track and third prize in the Innovation Track at the Huawei ICT Competition 2022-2023 Global Final concluded at Huawei Headquarters in Shenzhen, China,

Dr. Alvi presented the second prize certificate in the Network Track to Muhammad Faeez Ali, Asad Anwer from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro and  Maryam Fareed from Lahore College for Women University.

Lauding the continuing friendship with the People’s Republic of China, the Honourable President, Dr. Alvi, said, “It gives me great pleasure to know what Huawei has been offering and specifically how well the students from Pakistan have been performing in this ICT Competition over the years. Once again these brilliant students have made the country proud. This ICT Competition Program from Huawei speaks volumes of the efforts made in the past decade and how this Industry-Academia Relationship has been thriving towards providing the solid backbone towards the ICT Industry of Pakistan.”

He added that this exemplary collaboration between Industry and Academia laid the foundations for the future i.e. Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence. “The Education Sector and its development leads to a better economy. The government must focus on the environment development to promote the development of its people and such initiatives play a much vital role towards the achievement of this goal.”

Mr. Shunli Wang, Vice President  of Huawei Middle East & Central Asia, congratulated the Pakistan team that raised the Pakistan flag amongst global competition and made the country proud. He said, “The achievements Pakistan students and teachers have made , reflect on the great vision and determination of Pakistan government towards ICT talent nurturing, innovation and technology adaptation.”

Thanking the President, Ministry of IT and Telecommunication and Higher Education Commission for the support and inspiration, he added, “Your presence at this event is one of the best motivational factors, not only for the students of this competition, but also for millions of Pakistan younger generations in the future and Huawei as well.”

Huawei is building a robust ICT talent ecosystem and accelerating the digitalization progress of the world by launching more Huawei ICT Academies, releasing talent white papers, and holding the Huawei ICT Competition.

He added, “This year the two teams who came second in the Global Competition are here with us and I would like to congratulate them for their efforts and their representation of Pakistan. Pakistan is one of the few countries that has a high population of young talent waiting to be honed into future leaders of the country, which is why these students and similar programs started by Huawei are the key towards the transformation.”

Dr. Saif commended Huawei for its exemplary contributions, saying, “Huawei is one of the leading technology giants in the world and has a large footprint in Pakistan. We all agree that artificial intelligence, big data etc. is the future. With technical support from state-of-the-art companies like Huawei, we can train our youth to introduce digitization in Pakistan, this training having been a crucial step in that direction.”

Asad Anwar, a member from the winning team from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, said, “The direct linkage that Huawei provides to the academia through the Talent Ecosystem program means a lot to us students and today I am proud to be part of the legacy that has been set by my University and especially our teachers. Today, Alhamdulillah, I stand in front of you with the feeling of pride with which I have been given an opportunity to represent my beloved country on a global stage!”.

MoITT Sector Invests Rs. 70 Billion On Telecom Infrastructure & Digital Connectivity

Former Federal Minister of IT and Telecommunication, Syed Aminul Haq, said that the ministry invested over 70 billion on different development projects of telecom infrastructure and digital connectivity during the last three-year.

He was speaking at the farewell ceremony hosted in his honor by Pakistan Software Houses Association (PASHA) Chairman Zohaib Khan and SI Global Solution Chief Executive Officer Nauman Ahmed Saeed in Karachi.

During his address, Haq shed light on the establishment of the Special Facilitation Investment Council (SIFC) shortly before the government’s term ended. The council aimed to accelerate the information and communication technology sector’s growth in line with its evolving needs. Haq commended the visionary leadership of former Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir.

Furthermore, Haq extended his best wishes to Caretaker Minister of IT, Dr. Umar Saif, asserting that his expertise in IT would continue to propel the ministry towards success. He elaborated on his ministry’s achievements, including providing free online training to 3.6 million youth across 15 courses, generating over 400,000 employment opportunities through National Incubation Centers, and investing more than 42 billion rupees in the IT sector in Karachi and Islamabad.

Haq also highlighted the construction of state-of-the-art information technology parks, offering technological job opportunities to 118,000 Karachi youth, and providing mobile network access to 40 million people in remote regions, costing 78 billion rupees. Notably, his tenure successfully completed 83 projects, prioritizing tangible actions over rhetoric, transcending caste, language, and provincial divisions. The results of these endeavors are expected to materialize in the coming months.

In his welcome address, CEO S I Global Noman Said stated that the ministry had integrated d all its departments under one roof which significantly improved the overall performance of the IT sector.

Under the former minister, Pakistan witnessed the emergence of several brands, and projects including Tech Destination, cloud computing, cybersecurity policies, and freelancing. I hoped these all projects should be continued and carried forward with the same letter and spirit in the next five years.

Noman further stated that IT industries should continue to enhance its collaboration with academia and enhance capacity building of our human capital to enhance exports of IT and IT-enabled services to traditional and non-traditional markets.

PASHA Chairman Zohaib Khan said the collaboration with stakeholders coupled with the continuation of the policies are two major factors for the growth of the sector which should be persistent in the caretaker setup.

He mentioned that Pakistan’s IT industry significantly extended its exposure to international markets through participation in global events of the IT sector in the last three years.

Distinguished figures from the IT industry, including Jahan Ara, former president PASHA, CEO Systems Limited, Asif Peer, Nadeem Elahi , CEO Ibex, Azfar Ahsan, Former State Minister also joined the event.

The highly anticipated orientation session for Diploma in Computer Science under IT Mustakbil Training Program was organized at Ali Institute of Education for 175 trainees.

Toima Asghar, CHRO – Systems Limited officially welcomed the trainees from various educational backgrounds and leadership of Systems Limited and Ali Institute of Education. She congratulated the students and encouraged them to follow the footsteps of graduates of ITM Batch 1 who secured jobs in Systems Limited and a number of other companies. The graduates of ITM Batch 1 joined Systems Limited in the streams of Cloud & Infrastructure, Business Process Automation, Banking Financial Solutions, Integrations, Quality Assurance and Data Engineering.

Living legend, Syed Babar Ali graced the event and interacted with all trainees. He elaborated the vision of the program and role of Systems Limited in training youth of Pakistan. He said “We have provided a learning platform for you, now it depends upon you, how you can utilize this opportunity and get the best out of it. It is really important that you take this program seriously, as you have seen that the graduates first cohort have secured good jobs. We have provided you all the support you need to successfully complete this program, now you have to work hard and improve your quality of life for the betterment of your family and country.”

Succeeding that, Asif Peer, CEO & MD – Systems Limited, shared the way forward to the participants and prospects associated with this program. He said, “It is really exciting and heartening to see this program flourishing as we promised that we will take this program to not just one batch in Lahore but expand it to other cities. At Systems, we always believe in leading from the front, so all other industry players can follow this training model. I truly believe if other IT companies start training 100 resources, it will create a difference. We need to build an ecosystem with the help of public sector and other IT companies to train masses using the content and program which we developed.”

He further added, “We will do whatever it takes, to give you quality, content and mentorship, that will help you in getting jobs not just at Systems but outside Systems as well. If you work hard and show your strength, Systems has the capacity to absorb each and every person enrolled in this program. I always say that experience alone doesn’t make you expert, it’s your hunger and energy that trumps the experience.”
