KP Call to Action on diabetes and obesity prevention through a multi-sectoral dialogue

A policy dialogue on the subject held in commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, made recommendations to counter diabetes and obesity in the country.

 

Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir) Novo Nordisk Pakistan in collaboration with Embassy of Denmark in Pakistan and Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar organized a policy dialogue on World Diabetes Day 2023 in Peshawar.

Policymakers, Government departments, UN, NGOs, academia, media, medical associations, and corporates developed a joint call to action on diabetes and obesity prevention and promotion of healthy lifestyle.

The policy dialogue was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Syed Imtiaz  Hussain Shah, H.E. Jakob Linulf Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan, Muhammad Yahya Akhunzada, Joint Secretary Ministry of Economic Affairs, Dr. Riaz Anwar Advisor Health to Chief Minister, Secretary Health Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Aslam Wazir, Director General Health Services Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dr Shoukat Ali and Rashed Rafique Butt, Vice President & General Manager Novo Nordisk Pakistan including other dignitaries.

Prof. Dr. AH Aamir, Project Director D-TALK and Insulin for Life Program and HOD Endocrinology Unit, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Govt. of KP briefed the audience about growing challenge of diabetes and obesity in Pakistan and efforts to tackle it. He highlighted that the government is committed to tackle the increasing burden through concerted efforts to improve the health status of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Dr. Riaz Anwar Advisor Health to Chief Minister, highlighted the impact of diabetes and obesity on the society and urged a comprehensive to be adopted through Multi-Sectoral Co-ordination that identifies the roles and responsibilities of different sectors.

Speaking at the occasion, the Danish Ambassador to Pakistan H.E. Mr. Jakob Linulf appreciated the efforts made by the Government of KP and their approach to deal with the diabetes and obesity burden. His words were echoed by Mr. Rashed Rafique Butt, Vice President & General Manager of Novo Nordisk Pakistan, who further highlighted on the importance of Public Private Partnership to counter the chronic diseases like diabetes.

Additional Chief Secretary KP Syed Imtiaz Hussain Shah in his concluding remarks appreciated the efforts of Government of KP and the Embassy of Denmark on their initiative to tackle diabetes and obesity through partnerships with multi-stakeholders.

He affirmed governments unwavering political commitment and support to the cause.

The policy dialogue resulted in the development and agreement on a set of recommendations highlighting areas for multi-sectoral collaboration to strengthen capacity, leadership, governance and partnerships to accelerate provincial response for the prevention and control of diabetes and obesity.

Conducive policies are key for sustainable growth of pharmaceutical industry: PPMA Chief

Conducive policies, fair pricing mechanisms, and investment in
research and development are crucial for the growth of the
pharmaceutical sector to meet domestic demand and a sustainable
increase in exports to different countries.

This was stated by the Chairman Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers
Association (PPMA) Mian Khalid Misbah ur Rehman while inaugurating the
20th Pharma Asia Exhibition and Conference organized by Ecommerce
Gateway Pakistan.

Speaking as a chief guest, he said the continuation of policies is
essential to protect the life-saving sector, which continued to grow
its productivity despite various challenges and the high cost of doing
business.

He urged the pharmaceutical companies to bring efficiency in their
systems to offset the issue of high inflation, Rupee devaluation, high
packaging cost, etc.

He further said that pharmaceutical companies should focus on human
resources to sustain their business growth effectively.

PPMA added that the pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan produce
medicine at an international standard; hence, they can explore exports
in different countries to bring foreign exchange to the country.

The event hosted various seminars on the issues of pharmaceutical
industries which was addressed by Chairman PPMA South, President & CEO
of Medisure Laboratories, Sheikh Kaiser Waheed, Managing Director of
Sante (Pvt.) Ltd., Mr. Tauqeer ul Haq, Managing Director & CEO Martin

Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry is a significant contributor to the
economy, with an estimated value of  $3.2 billion and a growth rate of

TPL Trakker commemorates Pinktober: Awareness Barhao Jaan Bachao

In a heartfelt commemoration of Pinktober, Mr. Rao Salman, CEO of TPL Trakker, along with the executive leadership team, embarked on a thoughtful visit to Baitul Sukoon, a cancer hospital giving free end-to-end treatment to breast cancer patients. Every year, 40,000 women in Pakistan lose their battle against breast cancer. Early detection, self-evaluation, and bi-yearly checkups can prevent the disease from spreading. Women are encouraged to maintain a healthy weight, adopt a balanced diet, and be physically active to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

President for promoting tele-medicine and tele-health services in Pakistan

President Dr Arif Alvi has called for promoting tele-medicine and tele-healthcare platforms to improve the outreach of healthcare services to low-income areas of the country. He said that digital platforms could enhance the reach of health services to far-flung areas, besides providing timely advice to people and helping promote preventive healthcare solutions in Pakistan.

The President made these remarks while addressing a ceremony titled “Spirit of Female Entrepreneurship and Medical Leadership of Female Doctors” organised by Sehat Kahani, in Karachi. Sehat Kahani’s CEO, Sara Saeed Khurram, COO & Co-founder of Sehat Kahani, Dr Iffat Zafar, and other medical professionals working in the field of tele-healthcare services attended the event.

Addressing the event, the President said that nations failed due to lack of education and health facilities, adding that Pakistan needed to focus more on disease-prevention rather than curing the diseases. He also regretted that 28 million children were out of the school in the country.

The President highlighted that women in our country faced different hurdles in society towards their participation in mainstream economic activities. He stressed the role of institutions in creating greater opportunities to empower and educate women.

President Dr Arif Alvi appreciated Sehat Kahani’s active role in transforming the society with better opportunities for female doctors. He also acknowledged Sehat Kahani’s role for providing a pathway for women to serve their country, besides lauding their focus on tele-medicine and tele-health care services.

The President said that communication was the key to bringing betterment to society. He also emphasized initiating conversations at home as a step towards the solutions of issues such as mental health and well-being and other health related issues.

He said that the government launched a helpline through an application titled ‘Hamraaz’ to meet the challenge of mental health and the people, who were facing mental illness or any depression condition could use it. He said that Hamraaz was launched during the tenure of the previous government.

The President also presented shields to the doctors in the field of medicine, from various specialisations, serving all across Pakistan for their exceptional work and dedication to the field of medicine.

Sehat Kahani CEO and co-founder, Dr Sara Saeed Khurram, celebrating the remarkable achievements of Female Entrepreneurship and Medical Leadership of Female Doctors, said that Sehat Kahani was started to provide female doctors with the opportunity to serve their country. She said that Sehat Kahani – the digital healthcare organisation – not only connected patients to the doctors in Pakistan using its app but also had e-clinics nationwide serving underserved communities. PTCL Group and Pink Ribbon Collaborate For Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

Pakistan’s leading telecom and ICT services provider, PTCL Group (PTCL & Ufone 4G) in collaboration with Pink Ribbon Pakistan led a month-long campaign dedicated to educating and raising awareness about breast cancer. The campaign, multifaceted in its approach, exemplified the Group’s commitment to empowering individuals in their fight against breast cancer, emphasizing its dedication to the cause and support for those impacted by this disease.

The Group kick-started the campaign by converting the official company logos to pink on all digital platforms. This was followed by an internal awareness messaging campaign to educate employees about early detection and breast cancer prevention, accompanied by an awareness session in collaboration with Pink Ribbon. The session featured a panel discussion with Dr. Erum Najeeb, General Surgeon, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Dr. Asma Mahfooz from PTCL’s Health Team, a breast cancer survivor and a caregiver to a breast cancer patient. This discussion fostered open dialogues, promoted understanding and addressed questions, effectively breaking down knowledge barriers.

The campaign featured a range of awareness activities, each designed to educate and encourage employees to actively raise awareness about Breast Cancer. A Pink Futsal Match was also organized between PTCL Group and Eikon 7 in solidarity with the cause.

Throughout October, employees were encouraged to wear pink and share pledges at the Pledge Wall placed at Ufone Tower to publicly commit to supporting the cause. Furthermore, Ufone Tower and PTCL’s NEST Office were illuminated pink, demonstrating solidarity and community support for breast cancer survivors.

In addition to this, a donation drive was carried through UPaisa, and donation boxes were placed in office buildings to generate funds for Pakistan’s first specialized breast cancer hospital.

Concluding the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an awareness session was also conducted at Edhi Homes Islamabad to educate women and young girls about this disease.

October brings us Lahore Smart City Polo in Pink – Leading the Global Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign!

To commemorate the cause of breast cancer awareness in October, The Lahore Polo Club hosted the Lahore Smart City Polo in Pink tournament with the Grand Finale on 29th October 2023 with an exclusive event organized by Elysium. The event saw national and international players from USA, UK, Ukraine, Iran and Australia taking part in an exciting game of Polo as the who’s who of Lahore came out in full spirit for the occasion during a lovely afternoon which also featured a special motor bikes parade, tent pegging and the finale game of Polo.

 Lahore Smart City MD Jehanzaib Zahid Rafiq said: Polo is a game of prestige which develops inspirational relationships amongst the community. AKU Dean Adil Haider receives Johns Hopkins Alumnus Award

This distinguished accolade recognizes his exceptional work as a surgeon, trauma disparities researcher and his extraordinary leadership during the critical aftermath of the devastating floods that engulfed Pakistan in 2022.

Dr Adil Haider’s journey, from his graduation from AKU in 1998 to his current status as a thought leader in the medical world, is nothing short of inspiring. Throughout his illustrious career, he has consistently exemplified excellence in the field of medicine, while also taking it upon himself to bridge the gap between quality healthcare and underprivileged communities. During his time at Johns Hopkins Medicine, his team identified disparities in outcomes after traumatic injury and helped found the field of surgical disparities research.

What truly sets Dr Haider apart is his unyielding commitment to shaping the future of healthcare. He has actively mentored over 150 research trainees, authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications, and has been the Principal Investigator on extramural grants valued at more than twenty million dollars.

His influence in healthcare extends well beyond the walls of AKU. In addition to serving as the Dean of the Medical College, Dr Adil Haider holds the esteemed position of Director of Disparities and Emerging Trauma Systems at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, USA. He has served as a visiting professor at more than 30 universities and has held numerous leadership positions, including the Association for Academic Surgery President. He adds to his laurels by serving as the current Deputy Editor of JAMA Surgery, the #1 scientific journal in the field, and chairing the academic board of Pakistan’s Medical Regulator (PMDC) from 2020-2022.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award from Johns Hopkins stands as a testament to Dr Adil’s remarkable contributions to the field of medicine and his unwavering dedication to quality, access and patient care.
