Virus variants threaten global recovery, G20 warns

VENICE, Italy: An upsurge in new coronavirus variants and poor access to vaccines in developing countries threaten the global economic recovery, finance ministers of the world’s 20 largest economies warned on Saturday.

The G20 gathering in the Italian city of Venice was the ministers’ first face-to-face meeting since the start of the pandemic. Decisions include the endorsement of new rules aimed at stopping multinationals shifting profits to low-tax havens.

That paves the way for G20 leaders to finalise a new global minimum corporate tax rate of 15% at a Rome summit in October, a move that could recoup hundreds of billions of dollars for public treasuries straining under the COVID-19 crisis.

A final communique said the global economic outlook had improved since G20 talks in April thanks to the rollout of vaccines and economic support packages, but acknowledged its fragility in the face of variants like the fast-spreading Delta.

Imran fears 4th Covid wave looms over Pakistan, Indian variant ‘the biggest concern’

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday warned of a looming fourth wave of Covid-19 in the country, terming the Delta variant, which is believed to have originated in India, “the biggest concern”.

Pakistan has witnessed a sudden rise in daily cases in recent days.

According to the government’s Covid-19 portal, the number of daily Covid-19 cases dropped from four digits to three digits on June 25. The daily cases being reported remained close to the 900 mark till June 27 and further fell to 735 on June 28. Then the number of cases gradually started increasing and doubled in just one week. The positivity rate, which stood at less than 2 per cent in June, crossed 3pc after a gap of 20 days.

A day ago, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) had also confirmed presence of different variants of coronavirus, including the Delta (Indian), Beta (South African) and Alpha (UK) variants, in Pakistan and detection of their cases in May and June.

In a video message addressed to the nation today, the premier referred to countries including Afghanistan and Indonesia hit by the Delta variant and expressed concern over the upward trajectory of Covid-19 cases in Pakistan, just days after they were on the decline.

“We fear the Indian variant could strike Pakistan and as a precautionary measure, we need to adhere to the SOPs,” he warned.

While thanking people for abiding by the SOPs on his previous appeals, he urged the masses to continue their cooperation with the administration and compulsorily wear masks at all places, especially “restaurants, wedding gatherings, and indoor spaces, because such spots are extreme contributors to spread of the virus.”

The premier said he knew people had become tired of following the SOPs for over a year, but said: “We will further put your test stamina to test for your own safety.” He said it was not a herculean task to wear a mask.

COVID 19 worldwide death toll 4m, says WHO chief

GENEVA: The world is not in good shape in fighting COVID-19, according to the World Health Organization on Thursday as the WHO chief announced the passing of the 4 million mark in fatalities, which he said is a likely underestimate. “We have just passed the tragic milestone of 4 million recorded COVID-19 deaths, which likely underestimates the overall toll,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus speaking at a webinar. “Some countries with high vaccination coverage are now planning to roll out booster shots in the coming months and are dropping public health, social measures, and relaxing as though the pandemic is already over. “The WHO chief said that compounded “by fast-moving variants, and shocking inequity in vaccination (in) far too many countries in every region of the world we are seeing sharp spikes in cases and hospitalization. “- ‘Acute shortages of oxygen’He said this is leading to an acute shortage of oxygen treatments and driving “a wave of death” in parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. “Vaccine nationalism, where a handful of nations have taken the lion”s share, is morally indefensible, and an ineffective public health strategy against a respiratory virus that”s mutating quickly and becoming increasingly effective at moving from human to human. “He noted that at this stage in the pandemic, the fact that millions of health and care workers have still not been vaccinated is “abhorrent. “Tedros said variants are currently winning the race against vaccines because of inequitable vaccine production and distribution, which also threatens the global economic recovery. “It didn”t have to be this way, and it doesn”t have to be this way going forward,” he said. From a moral epidemiological and from an economic point of view, “now is the time for the world to come together to tackle this pandemic collectively,” said the WHO chief in a call for getting more vaccines to the developing world.
