Spotify launches ‘Your K-Pop Persona’ to celebrate the K-Pop fandom
K-Pop has undeniably become a cultural phenomenon worldwide, captivating audiences with its diverse sounds, mesmerizing performances, and magnetic personalities. In Pakistan and across Southeast Asia, the love for K-Pop has surged dramatically in recent years. Since 2014, K-hip-hop streams on Spotify have skyrocketed by 95 times globally, and since 2018, K-Pop streams have soared by over 420% in Southeast Asia, reflecting the genre’s growing influence and popularity in the region and beyond.
Spotify is adding its personalized touch to the K-Pop craze by launching “Your K-Pop Persona“. This innovative interactive experience is designed to celebrate the vibrant and passionate K-Pop community not just in Pakistan but all over the world, allowing fans to discover and embrace their ideal fan role within the genre.
“Your K-Pop Persona” invites fans to explore their connection to K-Pop uniquely and engagingly. By answering five questions about their stan habits, participants will receive their “Main Role” in the K-Pop fandom, such as Main Visual, Main Vocal, Main Rapper, Main Dancer, or Trainee. Whether a seasoned stan or a newcomer to the K-Pop scene, all fans are encouraged to join in the fun and discover their persona.
There is more to it than just unlocking their Main Role as Spotify users can also reveal an additional Fan Role based on their K-Pop listening habits. This personalized experience celebrates each individual’s unique fandom journey, offering a digital photo-card that can be customized and shared on social media platforms.

SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY TO OPEN TRIBECA FESTIVAL WITH WORLD PREMIERE OF “DIANE VON FURSTENBERG: WOMAN IN CHARGE”.
Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir) Pakistani filmmaker and two-time Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will headline the opening night of the 2024 Tribeca Festival in New York City, with the world premiere of “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman In Charge”, co-directed by Sharmeen and Trish Dalton.
The documentary chronicles the life of iconic fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, who redefined power dressing for women, and will feature interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Marc Jacobs, and Hillary Rodham Clinton to name a few. The documentary will also premiere on Hulu on June 25th, 2024.
This film dives deep into von Furstenberg’s remarkable career, from the creation of the iconic wrap dress in 1974 – a design that continues to flatter women of all shapes and sizes – to her ongoing role as a cultural icon. “Woman in Charge” promises an unprecedented look at von Furstenberg’s world, capturing both the triumphs and struggles that shaped her journey.

The awards program is designed to celebrate the brands and agencies leading the way on TikTok with their creative and high-performing campaigns, as well as embracing the unique nature of TikTok and delivering exceptional advertising experiences.
The Awards will showcase some of the most inspiring advertising campaigns that have brought authenticity, creativity and joy to the platform while achieving groundbreaking results. The initiative aims to acknowledge exceptional talent and innovation within the region.
The TikTok Ad Awards is now open for submissions from brands and agencies based in the METAP region, encompassing Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, South Africa and Pakistan. The program features six main categories that encompass various aspects of successful TikTok campaigns.
- It’s the Creative for me: Focuses on the idea and its strategy, and celebrates the brands and agencies that dared to push the boundaries of creativity with campaigns that were built TikTok-first, and showcased impactful results.
- Community Core: Celebrates the best use of Creators and the community. Shows how creators can use their unique voices and content styles seamlessly within your campaign idea.
- Bougie on a Budget: This category is for campaigns with the most creative use of modest production budgets and resources through both paid and organic content with community management to create maximum impact.
- Sound On Please!: Celebrates campaigns that use sound as an entry-point to their creative idea. There are so many different types of sound, different uses of sound, and likewise different creative approaches to sound on TikTok.
- The Trendsetter: Reimagine advertising through TikTok, showcasing your innovation and ability to captivate audiences and drive bold effective ideas through the unique utilization of ad products with a measurable impact on the platform.
- The People’s Choice: Chosen through a voting by the guests of the ceremony. The highest accolade – The Greatest Of All Time (The G.O.A.T) – will be presented to the best overall campaign that excels in creativity, achieves its media objectives and demonstrates effectiveness. This award aims to recognize campaigns that really tapped into TikTok’s community, creativity and trends to inspire joy and create cultural moments. All applications submitted under any of the six main categories will be automatically considered for the G.O.A.T.

The deadline for entry submission is September 6, 2024, giving participants ample time to prepare and showcase their creativity, authenticity, and impact. The winners will be revealed in November.

Announcing Coke Studio Season 15

Awarded as Pakistan’s biggest cultural export by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Coke Studio Season 15, featuring eleven original songs, will reflect the diversity of Pakistani culture, languages, genre and experiences, anchored in Pakistan’s passion and love for music.
With powerhouse producer and curator Zulfiqar (Xulfi) Jabbar Khan at the helm, each song in Season 15 is a collaboration, a story woven with threads of artistry and fraternity. The upcoming season will build on a legacy of compelling visual storytelling by some of Pakistan’s most progressive directors, including Awais Gohar, Murtaza Niaz, Jamal Rahman, Zain Peerzada, and Luke Azariah, alongside Coke Studio stalwarts Zeeshan Parwez and Kamal Khan.

Spotify celebrates EQUAL Pakistan’s Second Anniversary

Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir) Spotify’s signature program, EQUAL Pakistan, dedicated to bringing some of the finest women musicians from the country into the spotlight, marks its second anniversary in March. In celebration, Spotify is treating its listeners to an exciting data mix that showcases the evolving landscape of female representation in the country’s music industry over the past year.
To date, Spotify has added more than 6,900 women artists to EQUAL playlists and supported over 1,000 ambassadors in their home countries and beyond through editorial, partnerships, and marketing. EQUAL artists received 1.3 billion editorial streams within their first month of joining the program. In total, the EQUAL hub has generated over 31 billion editorial streams across 1 billion listening hours. In 2023 alone, more than 14.8 million artist discoveries were made through EQUAL playlists, and EQUAL artists received over 11,800 total editorial playlist adds.
“EQUAL Pakistan’s anniversary is a celebration of the resilient, towering women creators that shape the fabric of our music industry, and with EQUAL Pakistan, we aim to amplify these creators so that they can take more space,” said Rutaba Yaqub, Spotify’s Senior Editor for Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. “Over the past year, there has been more than a 25% increase in streams for local women artists in 2023 globally, compared to the previous year, whereas, there was a visible increase in local consumption of local women artists experiencing a 44% rise in streams in 2023, emphasizing their growing influence and appeal among local listeners.”
According to the data revealed by Spotify, Asteria witnessed an astounding 408% growth and Hareem Rashid experienced a significant surge of 281% in monthly listeners within just one month of being featured as the EQUAL Pakistan ambassadors for October and November 2023, respectively, demonstrating substantial amplification of some of the freshest voices budding in Pakistan. Tina Sani, Aima Baig and Sanam Marvi also experienced the highest growth in listenership since joining the EQUAL Pakistan program .
The programming of local woman artists in Spotify playlists also saw a commendable 20% growth in 2023, reflecting a concerted effort of EQUAL Pakistan to showcase and promote their talent to wider audiences.
The presence of renowned names like Momina Mustehsan, Nazia Hassan, Quratulain Balouch, Abida Parveen, and Hadiqa Kiani in the top local women artists worldwide for 2023 underscores the global impact of Pakistani talent and Spotify’s ability to bring these voices to an international audience.
Continuing its mission to spotlight some of the country’s most talented woman voices through EQUAL Pakistan, Spotify has announced Zeb Bangash as the Ambassador for the month of March this year and featured her song “Lajpal Ali” on the EQUAL Pakistan playlist. With her captivating music, Zeb has garnered more than 100k monthly listeners across multiple countries, the top among which are India, Pakistan, USA, UK and Canada.
