Thar Coal Projects will turn Tharparkar into a developed region, says Dr. Ishrat Hussain

Karachi – Former Governor State Bank and eminent economist, Dr. Ishrat Husain said on Sunday that Thar Coal projects will turn the currently underdeveloped district Tharparkar into a developed region.“The Pakistan government and other corporate sector organizations should adopt the social development model devised and implemented by the Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) in Thar to help the uplift of other lagging areas of the country,” he added.He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of a Thar Foundation-established school in the village Abban jo Tarr, Thar Coal Block II. A handicrafts center was also inaugurated at Thar Block II, Model House by Ameena Saiyid, head of the Oxofrd University Press.The center has been established by Thar Foundation to empower the Thari women economically by removing the middleman factor. Dr. Ishrat Husain lauded Thar Foundation’s social development model saying, “We could do away with illiteracy, poverty, and hunger if Pakistan’s private sector adopted the development model in place in Thar.”He said that mining and power projects are comparatively an easy job when juxtaposed with the area’s social and economic uplift, which are very well handled by the SECMC here. Dr. Husain added, “was quite a satisfying factor in the entire project.”Prior to the inauguration sessions, SECMC Chief Shamsuddin Ahmed Shaikh gave the delegates a comprehensive briefing on the mining and power projects as well as the community development program carried out from the Thar Foundation’s platform.

The delegates visited the SECMC’s mining project, Engro Powergen Thar Limited’s under-construction 660MW power plant and model house for the resettlement village before witnessing the school inauguration at village Abbas jo Tarr. The community welcomed the guests by presenting traditional Ajrak and Loee.

Head of Oxford University Press Pakistan Ameena Saiyid said that the cultural handicrafts made by the Thari women are commendable and that we should promote them at all potential platforms.

“SECMC’s bid to empower women of the area, socially and economically, in the form of women dump truck driving program is innovative and exemplary,” Saiyid said after engaging with the trainees of the program on the field.

Launching Ceremony of Business and Biodiversity Platform

Karachi –  IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), the Port Qasim Authority (PQA) and leading private sector companies of Pakistan jointly launched Pakistan’s first Business and Biodiversity Platform (BBP) at a ceremony held at PQA.The Platform is a unique initiative focusing on nature conservation through the collective support of the private sector.The launching ceremony was organised at PQA and presided over by the Chairman PQA Mr. Agha Jan Akhtar. Attending the ceremony were the members of IUCN, leading businesses, the initiating members of the platform, environmental experts and representatives from Sindh Forest Department.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman PQA Mr. Agha Jan Akhtar said, “There are environmental issues associated with the industrial developments which are required to be addressed in order to avoid long-term impacts on the coastal ecosystems and people.” Being a regulatory authority, he added, PQA is mandated to ensure that business operations are undertaken in environment friendly manner in the port area through mitigation of negative impacts such as pollution, cutting of mangroves, degradation of fisheries resources and displacement of local communities.

“The establishment of Business & Biodiversity platform is indeed a positive step and a good opportunity for the private sector to step ahead to improve their brand image both locally and internationally with the support of reputable conservation organisations like IUCN,” the Chairman concluded.

In his welcome address, Mr. Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, Country Representative, IUCN Pakistan, touched upon the environmental challenges Pakistan faces and shared IUCN’s work over the last 30 years. He appreciated the efforts being made by several businesses in Pakistan that are taking a strategic view of the environment they are operating in. “The corporate sector has come together to invest a significant amount in CSR activities –so there is a realization that exists. IUCN in this regard serves as a technical partner to assist in platform in identifying key environmental issues and potential interventions,” Mr. Cheema observed.

Mr. Aman Ul Haque Head of Engro Foundation elaborated that this is a very important first step towards a greener Karachi, partnering with other private sector companies the PQA and IUCN is a great model to achieve common goals towards mitigating the effects of Climate change.Mr. Sharique A. Siddiqui, CEO of Pakistan International Bulk Terminal, underscored the need for such Platform, highlighting as extremely essential for addressing the chronic environmental issues along the Karachi coast. “We are fully on board, and we encourage more companies to join this initiative so that our collective efforts can lead to a greater impact,” he noted.Finally, the official ceremony of the Platform concluded with the annual action plan to be implemented during the first year by IUCN. The action plan included the concrete steps to be undertaken such that seminars, capacity building trainings and workshops, biannual meetings, awareness sessions and addressing the key environmental issues at Port Qasim area.

Oman Air wins double at World Travel Awards

LG Electronics Announces Leadership and Business Changes to Enhance Competitiveness

Lahore  ―  LG Electronics (LG) announced the appointment of new executives to lead the Mobile Communications Company, Chief Technology Officer and Global Marketing Center as part of its sweeping realignment to better address the challenges ahead. It also named the establishment of the new B2B Company, to expand upon its successful commercial operations and to consolidate existing business to business functions across various LG Electronics divisions.

Among the key changes are:

Hwang Jeong-hwan has been named president and CEO of the LG Mobile Communications Company while current president Juno Cho takes on a new role within LG’s parent company. Mr. Hwang, who has years of experience in R&D, was closely involved in developing one of LG’s first smartphones in 2009 as head of the CTO’s Multimedia R&D Lab.Dr. Park Il-pyung, head of LG’s Software Center, will take on the role of Chief Technology Officer with current CTO Dr. Skott Ahn taking on a new position in LG Corp.
