Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir) Despite a record rainfall and prolonged monsoon season this year, K-Electric successfully ensured zero public safety incidents associated with its system. This achievement of KE came to light and remained the central point of discussion during an insightful webinar ‘Transmission & Distribution Network Protection’ organized by NEPRA on Friday.
Focused on safety of transmission and distribution networks, the session was commenced by Chairman NEPRA – Mr. Tauseef H. Farooqi who gave opening remarks and welcomed all the participants as well as speakers on behalf of the Authority. He said that this webinar was happening under NEPRA’s ‘Power with Safety’ initiative and was glad to see that progress was being made on HSE front.
After the opening remarks, Chief Distribution Officer at K-Electric – Mr. Amer Zia was invited to shed light on safety culture in KE. Mr. Amer Zia started his address by thanking the Authority and Chairman NEPRA for organizing this crucial session which could cascade important learnings pertaining to safety among industry peers. He said “Due to changing weather conditions accelerated by climate change, Karachi has started to experience heavy rainfall since past few years that led to unfortunate electrocution incidents in the past. Understanding the challenge, K-Electric under the guidance of NEPRA Authority, continued to learn from past experiences and uplifted its safety procedure through targeted investments. So far, K-Electric has ensured grounding of its electric poles along with their GIS tagging. Apart from this primary layer of protection, we are installing running earth wire on these poles done as a secondary layer as well i.e. ‘’protective earth’’ which would make sure the operation of protective devices effectively to prevent human body from leakage current. As a tertiary protection, all our overhead 11kV lines are double earth guard-wired and in case a wire breaks down, the system within the affected spans will get instantly tripped and the masses would remain safe from any unforeseen incident.”
He further added, “At KE, we also ensured that our staff members receive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Specialized Protective Equipment (SPE) that comply with the best standards of the world. At an organizational level, we have made uniforms and PPEs mandatory, without it no front-line worker can Work on field either it is overhead network or underground network. The objective to take all these measures is to make a safe, reliable, and efficient environment. KE is also constantly working on employees’ behaviors as well to further improve them through interactions and trainings. We deep dive to the roots and try to fix any limitations when identified, this has been our mindset that has led to zero incident that could be linked with KE during the recent Monsoons. We are also aware that this is not the destination, we are constantly working to further improve our systems and bring excellence. At the end, my advice to my industry peers is that Safety is a mindset that requires constant and not just one-time effort.”
After Mr. Amer, Consultant HSE at NEPRA – Mr. Sohail Ahmad took the central stage to provide insights into the Authority’s Transmission & Distribution Network Protection Guidelines. The industry needs to understand the requirements of diversified scenarios and better define 5G security standards and technologies to address associated risks.” “NESAS, developed in accordance with security standard guidelines pertaining to vendors’ product development and lifecycle processes, provides a security baseline to evidence that network equipment satisfies a series of security requirements. Together with the OIC-CERT 5G Security Framework, it offers a measurable and controlled environment with a Plan-Do-Check-Act guided actions for managing 5G security chaperoning rapid digital transformation needs of Arab nations,” he added. Huawei believes cybersecurity is a shared responsibility that cannot be addressed by one person, organization or nation alone. Huawei is ready to contribute our know-how and collaborate in an open, transparent and collaborative platform with all cyberspace stakeholders to ensure end-to-end cybersecurity that will be critical to realizing our vision of building a fully connected, intelligent world. MineHarmony Enters Stage of Large-scale Commercial Use, with 5G+AI Helping Mining Industry Unleash Digital

Pakistan (Nut Desk) One year after the commercialization of MineHarmony, Huawei announced the operating system has entered the stage of large-scale commercial use, as 5G+AI takes smart mining into a new phase. Speaking at Huawei Connect 2022, Ken Hu, Rotating Chairman of Huawei, emphasized the company’s dedication to working with partners to help industry customers choose the right technology for their needs – and make the most of it. “To provide our customers with scenario-based solutions that truly meet their needs,” Hu said, “we have to work side-by-side to truly understand the challenges in their industry.” According to Hu, just one year after its formation, Huawei’s Mine Team has made solid progress. Of particular note is the MineHarmony OS, a joint innovation by Huawei and China Energy Investment Corporation. The system has been deployed on 3,300 sets of equipment in 13 mines and one coal washery. In particular, the system has been deployed throughout the entire Wulanmulun (also known as Ulan Moran) Mine in Inner Mongolia, where significant progress has been made in connectivity, interface, and data access. The operating system covers a multitude of innovative scenarios, including smart control of equipment, auto patrol of fixed sites, and online upgrade of equipment, the time for which has been shortened from one day to just four minutes. On the way to digitalization and smart mining transformation, the first challenge for any mine is establishing the interconnectivity and interoperability of equipment and inaccessibility of data. Key to this is to find the most suitable network technologies. Huawei has taken its 5G capabilities as well as fully optical connectivity with FTTM and IPv6+ underground into the pits. These technologies, known for their low latency and high reliability, are ideal for multiple scenarios from video backhaul to remote equipment control. Underground coal mines are fitted with all kinds of devices and equipment running on different protocols, and finding a way to connect them all is a major challenge. For this, the Huawei Mine Team and China Energy teamed up with over 30 partners to develop MineHarmony, the first Internet of Things operating system in the mining sector, in just three months. As a leading-edge Industrial IoT OS, MineHarmony not only provides unified protocols for different equipment, but also simplifies operations with unattended inspections. The system covers equipment of all sizes, and uses unified protocols, to enable data sharing between equipment and interconnectivity between users and devices. Furthermore, 5G+AI video stitching technologies have enabled remote and precise control of mining machines, which in turn allows people working in offices to remotely control underground operations, thereby improving their work environment as well as mining safety. With 5G transmitting real-time video of the main belts and AI algorithms accurately identifying anomalies, the system turns time-phased manual inspections into 24/7 intelligent monitoring, in addition to cutting the number of underground inspection personnel by 20%. With cutting-edge ICTs that are deeply interwoven with field practices, the Huawei Mine Team has created a mining Industrial Internet platform that runs on unified standards and unified frameworks, and is dedicated to a unified set of data specifications. By building a next-generation IoT with cloud platforms as the core, data as a key factor, and security as a safeguard, the Mine Team is focused on forging a new mode of applications that integrate next-generation information technologies into the mining sector to forge new modalities for mine companies, supply chain, and the industrial chain. In this process, the Team will work closely with the sector to unleash new value for the mining industry. This will help the industry to become safer and more efficient, while requiring fewer people for undesirable and dangerous assignments. The digital transformation of industries brings both opportunities and challenges. Huawei looks forward to working with customers and partners in the spirit of openness, innovation, and collaboration. At the same time, Huawei encourages partners to work together to accelerate digitalization, unleash digital, and provide ever-more impetus for socioeconomic growth.
