Huawei and OPPO Sign Global Patent Cross-licensing Agreement

Today, Huawei and OPPO announced the signing of a global patent cross-licensing agreement, which covers cellular standard essential patents, including 5G.

“After more than 20 years of continuous innovation, Huawei has developed multiple high-value patent portfolios in the global marketplace in domains like 5G, Wi-Fi, and audio/video codecs,” said Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department. “We are delighted to have reached a cross-licensing agreement with OPPO. The mutual recognition of intellectual property value between companies is a major step towards fostering a positive cycle of innovation and research in high-value standards: investing, receiving returns from investment, and then reinvesting. This will enable our industry to keep innovating and provide consumers with more competitive products and services.”

“We are very pleased to enter into patent cross-licensing agreement with Huawei. It clearly demonstrates that the two companies recognize and greatly respect the value of each other’s intellectual property. Meta launches Facebook Stars in Pakistan, a new way for creators to make an income

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Facebook Stars, Meta’s monetization feature for content creators is now open to all eligible creators in Pakistan to help them connect with their audiences and build a business.

Stars, a digital good that fans can buy and send to support creators, will enable Pakistani online content creators to easily onboard, check their earnings by content type, manage their goals, and access other Stars settings. This tool is available across multiple formats: Facebook Reels, Facebook Live, on-demand videos, as well as photos and text posts.

“Helping creators to build community and turn their passions into professions is a key part of our continued investment in Pakistan,“ said Jordi Fornies, Meta’s Director of Emerging Markets for the Asia Pacific region. “Today, we are thrilled to announce that Facebook Stars is open to all eligible creators in Pakistan, so more people can start earning while they grow their creativity, audience and careers.”

Earlier this year, Meta brought Reels to Pakistan, introducing short form, entertaining video experiences and tools to creators and audiences. Today Reels is the fastest-growing content format on Meta platforms globally. There are more than 140 billion Reels played across Facebook and Instagram each day.

“We are encouraged to see Meta’s contribution in supporting local businesses in Pakistan and opening up different ways for Pakistani content creators to generate meaningful, reliable revenue on their platforms. We hope the Stars program will create new opportunities to monetize and play a role in strengthening the country’s digital economy,” said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan during his visit to the Meta regional office in Singapore today.

Any Pakistani creator with at least 1,000 followers online through the last 60 days who meets the following eligibility criteria will be able to begin receiving Stars from their audiences.

ICCIA’s 5th Best of Entrepreneurship (BOE) event on Green Entrepreneurship took place at KSBL

Karachi (Muhammad Yasir) The Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture (ICCIA) organized its 5th “Best of Entrepreneurship Pakistan (BOE)” round in partnership with Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD), Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry, FPCCI and hosted by Karachi School of Business and Leadership (KSBL).

Under the theme of “Green Entrepreneurship in Pakistan: Challenges, and opportunities”, the event aimed to highlight the opportunities the green economy presents for the future entrepreneurs as well as existing businesses and hear their challenges in realizing their plans.

21 speakers, representing national and international entities, shared their experiences, best practices, and highlighted challenges along their journey to enrich the discussion. These will provide a strong basis to develop policy recommendations that are needed to support the growth and investment in this extremely important area in Pakistan as well as within the intergovernmental bodies to contribute to the voice of the global south private sector that is the most affected area within the climate crisis.

Highly informative presentations and lessons learned were shared with an audience that included entrepreneurs and professionals who are focused on sustainable and environment-friendly business practices. University students, aspiring entrepreneurs, and business enthusiasts were also part of the event.

The morning session of the event discussed two of the most important areas within the climate context: Energy and Plastic. In the Energy segment, green transitioning of the sector was discussed by a panel of multinationals as well as local businesses including Mr. Mujtaba Khan of Reon Energy, Mr. Zain Hak, Vice President/Global Head – of Agriculture & Forestry, Chairman of the Board SPL PLC, Shell, and Mr. Hashim Raza, CEO K-Solar.

The second panel was dedicated to the Plastic consumption and how the businesses are moving towards reducing their contributions to our landfills, sea, rivers, and the environment at large. The panel included representation from Academia including including Dr. Yasir Nawab, Associate Professor / Dean SET, National Textile University and Ms. Shiza Aslam, Head of Circular Plastic Institute, KSBL and the private sector including  Mr. Khawaja Bilal Hussain, Senior Vice president, Head of Strategy, Sustainability and Business Development, Engro, Mr. Shariq Vohra, Former President, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry & Executive Committee Member of FPCCI and Mr. Waleed Bin Ayub, Sr. Packaging & Sustainability Development Manager at Unilever.

The afternoon session of the day focused on entrepreneurial journeys to create interest in the university students and aspiring or new entrepreneurs so they understand what it takes to start and run a business. Speakers included Mr. Farhan Adil Mehboob, Director S.Mehboob & Co, Mr. Ahmad Shabbar, Founder, Director and CEO of Garbage Can, Mr. Kumayl Khaleeli, CEO of Zephyr Power. Importers should be allowed to clear stranded containers by buying dollars from the open market: Ijaz Tanveer

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry Standing Committee on FMCG has demanded the government to clear the containers stuck at Ports by allowing the importers to purchase dollars from the open market. The committee also demanded the government to give a ten-year integrated plan for import substitution. The government should chalk out a stable and strong economic policy and the economy should be separated from politics. Containers stuck at ports should be transferred to customs and other warehouses so that billions of dollars are not lost in terms of demurrages, Pakistan FMCG sector leaders demand from the government. The importers made these demands during an important meeting of the standing committee of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry for FMCG sector, which was chaired by the president of the committee and executive member of the chamber Muhammad Ijaz Tanveer. Senior leader FMCG sector Sheikh Khalid Mahmood and Waqas Arshad also spoke in the meeting. On this occasion, officials and members of Pakistan FMCG sector, Ehsanullah Khan, Azhar Amin, Basharat Ali. Tanveer Rizvi. Mohsin Hameed. Muhammad Aoun. Muhammad Abdullah. Ali Tariq Apart from Muhammad Iqbal, a large number of people belonging to the relevant sector were present in the ceremony. The participants of the meeting discussed the current poor economic conditions and the problems of the FMCG sector and demanded the government to solve these problems as soon as possible. UBL & Sindh Enterprise Development Fund sign agreement for institutional collaboration

Karachi (Muhammad Yasir) United Bank Limited (UBL) and Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SEDF) recently signed an Agreement for Institutional Collaboration to provide Subsidized Credit to Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) in Sindh.

The agreement signing ceremony, held at the UBL Head Office in Karachi, was chaired by Syed Qassim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to CM Sindh for Investment Department and Public-Private Partnership Projects. Mr. Khizar Pervaiz, CEO-SEDF and Mr. Shazad G. Dada, President & CEO UBL signed the Agreement in the presence of officials and dignitaries from the public and private sector which also included Syed Mansoor Abbas Rizvi, Secretary to Government of Sindh-Investment Department among others.

UBL will provide much needed project financing to SMEs and the Agricultural sector and SEDF will provide mark-up subsidy on loans provided by the bank. This collaboration will create a win-win situation for the stakeholders and create an enabling environment to promote investments in the province.
