‘Inefficient storage system causing loss of $1.3b annually to Pakistan’

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir)

Focus on developing an efficient storage system can help Pakistan save up to $1.3 billion annually in post-harvest losses as inadequate storage facilities are the primary reason for losses in staple commodities. Pakistan produces approximately 27 million tons of wheat per annum which is valued at US$7.4 billion.

However, the country has less than 6 million tons of storage capacity, which means that the remaining quantity of wheat is stored under unregulated conditions leading to a minimum 10% loss of the remaining commodity which is accounted for $740 million. “If this grain is saved, it is enough to feed the population of Karachi and Lahore,” claimed Asia Pacific Seed Association (APSA) Executive Member Farhan Tahir while talking to News Update.

Farhan said that all efforts were being made to increase per acre yield but there was no focus on saving whatever we were already producing. Farmers could not hold their yield for even two months and they were not getting the due price of their commodities due to it. Corn is an example; Pakistan was having per acre yield at par with the US but prices crash when harvest comes causing losses to the growers. He said climate change was also a big threat to the country and warrants that efficient storage systems should be adopted. He said monsoon season had spread from earlier three weeks to six weeks and torrential and erratic rains were a big threat to stored grains. He said recent floods had caused severe damage to our wheat which was mostly stored in ‘Ganjis’ in open areas. Due to high infestation, excessive use of phosphine tablets as fumigants by farmers is poisonous in nature. It has been a leading cause of health issues such as Anemia and diarrhoea specifically for women in Pakistan. If the farmers were able to store their commodity for an additional two-to-three-month they can enhance their income by 20-40%. Moreover, a saving of 15-20% on post-harvest losses can decrease the cost of production for end consumers considerably, he added.

Farhan, Director Haji Sons, a leading Pakistani agricultural company dealing in different farming solutions, said that ‘hermetic’ technology developed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) along with the University of Hohenheim works on the principles of the airtight jar and the best solution to these problems. Hermetic properties allow no exchange of moisture or any gases from the ambient environment. This creates a high CO2 and low oxygen environment which prevents life inside the hermetic cocoon without any use of chemicals and allows storing commodities organically for up to 12 years consistently. The condition of the commodities in the cocoons can be monitored remotely from anywhere using a smartphone, he added He said that they had already launched this project in Okara and Chiniot. The Cocoons were placed in the open field and were installed with sensors and humidity meters for monitoring carbon dioxide and humidity levels in the grains through a mobile application. Farhan said that they were renting out this hermetic cocoon to farmers but the government should come into the field and ask Pakistan Agricultural Storage & Services Corporation (PASSCO) and provincial food departments to adopt this technology and save their stored grains. He said they were already in talks with the Punjab food department for the spread of this technology. “The Government should also extend interest-free loans to farmers so as they can adopt this technology to build an organic and efficient storage for their own besides opting for various other technologies to save the grain produced after hard labour,” Farhan concluded.

How to Buy Right Smartphones according to Your Budget & Needs

When it comes to getting a brand-new mobile phone, there are many choices available. It can be challenging to determine where to begin because there are so many various makes, models, and pricing points from which to choose.

You can, however, locate the ideal smartphone suitable for your finances and your requirements if you follow a few easy steps.

Step 1: Determine Your Budget

Establishing a spending limit is the first thing you should do when shopping for a new smartphone. Because the price of a smartphone can range anywhere from less than $100 to over $1,000, it is essential to have a good sense of how much money you are ready to spend before shopping for one.

This will assist you in reducing the number of possibilities available to you and concentrating on the models most likely to fulfil your requirements.

Step 2: Consider Your Requirements

After establishing your financial limits, the following step is to think about what you require. This may include aspects such as the screen’s size, the camera’s quality, battery life, and storage space.

For instance, purchasing a camera with a high resolution should be one of your top priorities if you take a lot of images and videos. If you use your phone for gaming or streaming videos, having a larger screen size and a longer battery life is more significant to you.

Step 3: Consider All of Your Alternatives

Now is the time to start exploring your possibilities, keeping in mind both your financial constraints and your requirements.

It is essential to look at reviews and make comparisons in order to get a sense of which smartphone models are the greatest fit for you because there are a lot of different smartphone models and brands from which to select. Apple, Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and many other companies are among the most well-known names in the smartphone industry.

Step 4: Compare Features and Prices

After you have narrowed down your choices, it is time to examine the pricing and features of your remaining possibilities. This will assist you in finding a smartphone that offers the most bang for your buck and will guarantee that you acquire a device with all the required features.

It is important to shop around at various stores and on the internet to find the best price, as a large range of prices is available.

Step 5: Make Your Purchase

Now that you’ve located the ideal smartphone that satisfies your financial constraints and requirements, it’s time to make your purchase. Be sure to give the product description as well as the warranty details a thorough reading before concluding your purchase.

Additionally, check to see that the store or online marketplace from which you are making your purchase is reliable and that it provides a satisfactory return policy. You can also visit Qmart as they are well known for mobile selling online stores.

Conclusion

Purchasing a new smartphone can be an intimidating undertaking because there are so many different options and price ranges to pick from. If you follow these methods, you will be able to select the smartphone that is the best fit for both your demands and your budget.

Begin by establishing a spending limit for yourself, then move on to evaluating your available selections, weighing the pros and drawbacks of each, and concluding with making a purchase.

If you have the correct smartphone, you’ll be able to capture moments easily, stay connected to friends and family, and get your work done quickly.

NEPRA to hear KE Request for highest ever Rs. 10/ Unit Reduction for Dec FCA

Pakistan (Muhammad Yasir) The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will be conducting a public hearing today, January 31, 2023, on KE’s request for a reduction of Rs. 10.26 /unit on account of Fuel Charge Adjustments (FCA) for December 2022. The FCA is reviewed every month as per the tariff regime applicable across the country and is usually applicable to the consumer’s bills for one month only.

FCAs are linked with changes in global fuel prices and passed onto consumer bills under prescribed rules and regulations of NEPRA and the Government of Pakistan.

December’s FCA request was lower primarily due to a reduction in prices of RLNG, furnace oil, and power purchased from CPPA-G by 17%, 15%, and 29% respectively as compared to September 2022 and better utilization of generation mix.

For the past consecutive months, downward trends in prices of fuels have enabled KE to pass on benefits of negative FCA to customers. Per NEPRA guidelines, after scrutiny of KE’s submission, the Authority will issue instructions on the period during which these costs can be applied to consumer bills. December FCA is likely to apply in February 2023 bills.
