PUBG inspiring youth for suicides? | NUT

Players Unknown’s Battle Grounds (PUBG) popular android game have created quite a passion and liking among young generation of Pakistan. The game was on its way of strengthening the roots in youth who loved to clear exciting encounters of the game in various levels but all of the sudden Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) have posed ban on the game on the request of Punjab Police. Additional IG of Punjab Police Inam Ghani also shared an exclusive message for parents regarding restriction on the game after teenage commits suicide due to a missing task in PUBG.

The ban on immensely popular Battle royale game was announced on 1st July after PTA received complaints from different segments of the society and parents. A number of suicide cases and attempts to take their own lives by youngsters proved to be a decisive factor when the internet regulator decided to continue the temporary suspension of the game after the hearing on 9th July.

PTA, however, failed to reach a decision on the matter after hearing the petitioners and comments from the public. PTA had earlier asked the general public to submit their response on the ban by emailing their messages to consultation-pubg@pta.gov.pk. In this regard, PTA issued the following statement after the hearing yesterday:

There was a hearing conducted in PTA on PUBG by authorized officers. The petitioner in IHC, councils of PUBG, Civil society representatives participated. They presented their viewpoints for and against ban on PUBG. The Authority will decide on the matter after due deliberation in the next few days. The authority has confirmed that the final decision on whether to extend the ban or remove it will be announced in a few days.

Earlier, the Islamabad High Court had dismissed a petition filed by a local PUBG champion who was set to represent the country in a mega gaming event. The court also directed PTA to explain the laws under which the ban was imposed on the game. In the past week or so, a number of Twitter campaigns have called on PTA to unban PUBG.

Here’s how you can Still Play PUBG Mobile in Pakistan

However, this is not stopping fans from playing the game and they are finding different ways to avoid the ban. As we all know, nothing can truly be banned from the internet as people will always find a solution. In PUBG’s case, people are using VPNs to bypass the ban. This does increase the ping (delay or latency) compared to what players would normally get get, but it is still playable nonetheless.

Normally VPNs are not that good for gaming, but after some testing, we’ve found the ones that give the best results. Here is a quick guide for how you can use VPNs to play the game.

VPN Master

VPN Master is able to provide the best results for online gaming. While others can also ensure low ping, VPN Master is completely free, allows unlimited data, and has a variety of regions you can choose from. In any case, let’s hope that players do not have to put up with this for too long. PTA is scheduled to announce its final decision soon and that will ultimately decide the fate of the game. Fingers crossed.

However youngster should not take this game so seriously and just play it like a game. They should take part in healthy activities in sports and creative writing and thinking besides wasting so much time on play game on mobile as by doing this they are wasting precious times which will never come back. The Newsupdate Times also supports ban imposed by PTA on PUBG as incidents of suicides have no justification and there is nothing important than human life.

Board Members Appointed for the New Global Independent  ‘Oversight Board’ for Facebook and Instagram Content

Board Includes One Member from Pakistan and Will Make Binding and Transparent Decisions on Content

Lahore (Muhammad Yasir) Today, Nighat Dad, Pakistani lawyer and a founder of Digital Rights Foundation, was appointed as Board Member to the newly created Oversight Board. The Oversight Board will review certain content decisions by Facebook and Instagram and make binding decisions based on respect for freedom of expression and human rights.

The Oversight Board will tackle increasingly complex and contentious debates about what types of content should and should not be permitted on Facebook and Instagram and who should decide. The Board will prioritize cases that potentially impact many users, are of critical importance to public discourse, or raise questions about Facebook’s policies. Decisions made by the Board must be implemented by Facebook, as long as they do not violate the law. Oversight Board Members are independent from the company, funded by an independent trust and cannot be removed by Facebook based on their decisions.

“I want to make sure the Oversight Board is inclusive, and that the voices of the Global South are heard as loudly and clearly as the voices of the Global North,” said Dad. “I believe the Board can be a tool for change and I want to be at the table where these decisions are made.”

Dad will work in collaboration with 19 other Members who speak over 27 languages and have diverse professional, cultural, political, and religious backgrounds and viewpoints. Over time the Board will grow to around 40 Members. While no one can claim to represent everyone, Members are confident that the global composition will underpin, strengthen and guide decision-making.

The Board was designed with transparency in mind

All decisions will be made public, and Facebook must respond publicly to them. All Board decisions will be published on its website, while protecting the identity and privacy of those involved. Additionally, the Board will issue a public annual report on its work to evaluate how the Board is fulfilling its purpose and whether Members believe Facebook is living up to its commitments.

Members are independent from Facebook

Members contract directly with the Oversight Board, are not Facebook employees and cannot be removed by Facebook. Members will serve for a maximum of three 3-year terms and case panels will be confidential and assigned at random; no Member can choose the panel they sit on, and all opinions will be anonymous. The Board’s financial independence is also guaranteed by the establishment of a $130 million trust fund that is completely independent of Facebook, which will fund its operations and cannot be revoked.

The Oversight Board is focused on addressing some of the most significant content moderation decisions on Facebook and Instagram that are referred by both users and Facebook

The Oversight Board will begin hearing cases in the coming months. Initially, users will be able to appeal to the Board in cases where Facebook has removed their content. Over the following months, the Board will also be able to review appeals from users who want Facebook to remove content, including advertising. The Board will not be able to make decisions on all of the many thousands of appeals from users that it anticipates receiving, but it will prioritise cases that potentially impact many users, are of critical importance to public discourse or that raise questions about Facebook’s policies.

Tightening Our Policies and Expanding Resources to Prevent Suicide and Self-Harm

Tightening Our Policies and Expanding Resources to Prevent Suicide and Self-Harm

By Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety

As a global online community, keeping people safe on our apps is incredibly important to us. Since 2006, we’ve worked with experts from around the world to inform our policies, practices and products supporting those at risk of suicide or self-injury.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, we’re sharing an update on what we’ve learned and some of the steps we’ve taken in the past year, as well as additional actions we’re going to take, to keep people safe on our apps, especially those who are most vulnerable.

Improving How We Handle Suicide and Self-injury Related Content

Earlier this year, we began hosting regular consultations with experts from around the world to discuss some of the more difficult topics associated with suicide and self-injury. These include how we deal with suicide notes, the risks of sad content online and newsworthy depictions of suicide. Further details of these meetings are available on Facebook’s new Suicide Prevention page in our Safety Center.

As a result of these consultations, we’ve made several changes to improve how we handle this content. We tightened our policy around self-harm to no longer allow graphic cutting images to avoid unintentionally promoting or triggering self-harm, even when someone is seeking support or expressing themselves to aid their recovery. On Instagram, we’ve also made it harder to search for this type of content and kept it from being recommended in Explore. We’ve also taken steps to address the complex issue of eating disorder content on our apps by tightening our policy to prohibit additional content that may promote eating disorders. And with these stricter policies, we’ll continue to send resources to people who post content promoting eating disorders or self-harm, even if we take the content down. Lastly, we chose to display a sensitivity screen over healed self-harm cuts to help avoid unintentionally promoting self-harm.

Our engagement with experts has proven so valuable that we’re also hiring a health and well-being expert to join our safety policy team. This person will focus exclusively on the health and well-being impacts of our apps and policies, and will explore new ways to improve support for our community, including on topics related to suicide and self-injury.

And for the first time, we’re also exploring ways to share public data from our platform on how people talk about suicide, beginning with providing academic researchers with access to the social media monitoring tool, CrowdTangle. To date, CrowdTangle has been available primarily to help newsrooms and media publishers understand what is happening on Facebook. But we are eager to make it available to two select researchers who focus on suicide prevention to explore how information shared on Facebook and Instagram can be used to further advancements in suicide prevention and support.

In addition to all we are doing to find more opportunities and places to surface resources, we’re continuing to build new technology to help us find and take action on potentially harmful content, including removing it or adding sensitivity screens. From April to June of 2019, we took action on more than 1.5 million pieces of suicide and self-injury content on Facebook and found more than 95% of it before it was reported by a user. During that same time period, we took action on more than 800 thousand pieces of this content on Instagram and found more than 77% of it before it was reported by a user.

Becoming a Safer Forum for Difficult Conversations

Experts have told us that one of the most effective ways to prevent suicide is for people to hear from friends and family who care about them. Facebook has a unique role in facilitating those kinds of connections and we’re taking additional steps to support those who are discussing these sensitive topics, especially young people. To help young people safely discuss topics like suicide, we’re enhancing our online resources by including Orygen’s #chatsafe guidelines in Facebook’s Safety Center and in resources on Instagram when someone searches for suicide or self-injury content.

The #chatsafe guidelines were developed together with young people to provide support to those who might be responding to suicide-related content posted by others or for those who might want to share their own feelings and experiences with suicidal thoughts, feelings or behaviors.

We’ll continue to invest in people, technology and resources so that we can do more to protect people on our apps. Visit our Suicide Prevention Resource page to learn more about what’s available.

IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING AND MEPA REGION ACTIVITIES

By S M Imran

Chairman Middle East, Pakistan and Africa (MEPA) Region, EO

The networking opportunity at the platform of Entrepreneur’s Organization fosters the exchange of information and ideas among individuals and groups that share common interests. This is a unique opportunity available to its members across the globe. It further manifests that EO is not a lobbying forum like other sector-specific associations and chambers of commerce and industry.

No matter what profession you’re in, networking at the platform of EO is the fuel that accelerates success. Not only is it useful for learning directly from individuals you meet, but the benefits of association and growing your own authority are just as powerful. Shining entrepreneurs with multicultural backgrounds and experiences turns into one community at EO. A blend of idea sharing and exchange of information results into an exponential growth of respective members.

Gone are the days when answer to the question that why are some entrepreneurs so much more successful than others in starting new ventures was attributed to either on the personality traits or susceptibility to various cognitive errors of individual entrepreneurs or on such external factors as the number of competing businesses. But entrepreneurs’ social skills—specific competencies that help them interact effectively with others—may also play a role in their success. A high level of social capital, built on a favorable reputation, relevant previous experience, and direct personal contacts, often assists entrepreneurs in gaining access to venture capitalists, potential customers, and others. Once such access is gained, the nature of the entrepreneurs’ face-to-face interactions can strongly influence their success. Specific social skills, such as the ability to read others accurately, make favorable first impressions, adapt to a wide range of social situations, and be persuasive, can influence the quality of these interactions. Moreover, by helping entrepreneurs expand their personal networks, social skills may also contribute to their social capital. Because social skills can readily be enhanced through appropriate training, entrepreneurs who take advantage of such opportunities may reap important benefits.

Relationships matter. They provide us social context, allow us to transfer trust, and create opportunity. Relationships also, not surprisingly, fuel more relationships. But how do you start building your network? The short answer is through organizations. Besides a curated network of relationships, organizations also provide excellent opportunities to give back, mentor others, and find resources to help businesses succeed.

EO is the world’s only peer-to-peer network exclusively for entrepreneurs. Founded in 1987, EO enables entrepreneurs to learn and grow from each other leading to greater business success and an enriched personal life.

Since 1987, the Entrepreneurs Organization has been transforming the lives of the entrepreneurs who transform the world. As the global thought leader on entrepreneurship, SO plays an integral role in business, industries and the lives of leading entrepreneurs everywhere.

Being the Chairman MEPA Region, I’m pursuing my mission statement of ‘building bridges’ and a regional event ‘EO Grow’ will be organized in UAE in May 2018. Leading professors from Harvard University will be the key-note on the occasion They will hold learning sessions to enhance skills of MEPA members. This is also called ‘Executive Education Program’.

A regional council meeting will take place in Cape Town. MEPA will hold a session of Global leadership academy, titled as ‘Nelson Mandela Session’ in the jail at Cape Town, South Africa, where Nelson was imprisoned for his political struggle.

In the end of January, presidents of EO will hold meeting in Kenya to evaluate and train new entrants to the organization.

EO Resonate will take place in Tanzania by mid-February to promote and support women entrepreneurs.
